Curious question - would this work for adults? By "adults" I mean myself, a 26 year old woman with autism. Most people with autism who have speech disorders related to excessive saliva are low-functioning, so the fact that I'm high-functioning and have a speech impediment due to excessive saliva likely makes me a rarity (I'm high functioning but it's not mild autism, more like the high end of moderate). I lack an automatic swallowing reflex so I have to remember to swallow, usually noticing my mouth is full is my reminder. I wonder how it's like for most people, swallowing being like breathing or blinking. To give an idea of what I have, try this - talk for 10 minutes without swallowing your saliva, you will likely receive a "something's wrong" signal urging you to swallow (I assume that's how it works), after 10 minutes you'll likely either be on the verge of drooling or you'll be gurgling your words. Both of those are regular outcomes for me. Is there a way I can speak clearly without putting myself at constant risk for drooling all over myself? Would this help?
I cannot say for sure if it will help you. I appreciate you sharing your insights here! I would find an SLP who could potentially see if this technique could work for you.
@@ninilovenana That might be it, I know I slosh my saliva around a lot without realizing it, I even kinda gurgle it sometimes, but I can go like 5+ minutes without swallowing (I have to remember to do it voluntarily or else I don't and I drool).
Increasing language can be very challenging ! There is lots that can be done but it depends on the child I do have many techniques for this though. Try checking out my free workshop bit.ly/2ELvSnM
Thanks for your efforts with your fantastic vidros and willingness to advise. i am a mother of two autistic kids: a girl aged 5 and a half and a boy aged 4 and a half. diagnosed last year. I have two other kids who are NT and very advanced and their speech is great. But my two autistic kids have significant kanguage difficulties...especially my son. I am an Academic Dr. I left my career last year and I am.being trained to be their ABA tutor since 6 months. i have loads of questions...but the most urgent one is about my son who still didnt pronounce any word...or not even a word approximation or a bubble. just verbal stimming... Kiaaa....liaaaa ...kalaaaa...yakwaaa...koumiii....ilaaa i am very worried if he has Apraxia beside autism... here in the UK...ABA is not very known and does not have a good reputation and it took me 3years to have the diagnosis in place... ABA helped my son with his self help care skills...toileting (he is off nappies) and goes to the toilet independently....and reduced negative behaviour... but there is no improvment in his speech.. Is there a way I could call you on a phone number to have a quick chat, to save your time please. i need your help please.
Even when doing VB and using the strongest reinforcer for him.... he refuses or cannot produce any word approximation or a close sound... I am very worried

I always wondered why my daughter always made saliva sounds and like she was swallowing excessively.
