I would like to have more information about receptive language challenges in autism. Receptive language challenges in high functioning autism can be really a journey. Also, social thinking interventions are very in high demand among SLP and it is incredible necessary and si useful!
Hi Mary Barbera, I am a teacher and have read your book and been watching your videos for years and I found them really useful. Now I am working with a non-verbal 11 year-old child who's had an autism diagnosis since the age of 4. (He is reported to have been able to say some words at the age of 2) There are no issues with eating and drinking, but does not utter any sounds, has very limited communication (drags you to the cupboard if he wants snack) and does not seem to differentiate or really look at pictures. Could you direct me to somewhere where I could learn some strategies I could use with him?
My son had a strong attachment to his pacifier until age 2 and still drink from bottle and cipy cup. He doesn't talk but prononce few letters of alphabet and sometimes says mama.. But that's all. I'll have to start transitioning quickly thank you for this precious advise🙏
@@marybarbera thank you!! I definitely will. I just came back from doing some tests and they said even if it's not a full diagnostic yet he shows some signs of Autisms that I had doubt about. But you did say it can be turn around right??
I am struggling between GI & OT,..getting my twin boys with their weight gain/Nutrition and food. GI is saying weight gain/nutrition is important, OT is saying chewing and drinking from cup is important and not so focused on weight gain. But I have never thought speech was so connected to these two. My twin boys are 7 and still on textured purée and one is now refusing to use straw which is resulting me into feeding him liquids with a syringe 😫😭 please help
Those sound like serious feeding issues and i'd try to find a behavioral feeding program for sure. Chewing and drinking is important but so is nutrition so I guess it would depend if chewing is a pre requisite to the nutrition. A feeding program usually has a team of therapists on the same page.
I would definitely recommend getting rid of the bottle, especially if she has any speech issues. I have a free guide about weaning here: marybarbera.com/pacifier-bottle-weaning-children-autism-6-easy-steps

What about straw bottle? Are they bad too?
Drinking out of a straw is good! It is best if it is a straw or open cup.
Great advise thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful!
