Typical windies batsman he was.. Flamboyance at its finest.. Wonderful player of the hook and cut shots... People forget Richie was the number 1 batsman in the world for a period
He was to West Indies batting to what Stuart Macgill was to Australian leg spin. Both were fantastic players in their own right but were always in the shadows of one of the best ever.
Sadly, the weight of captaincy quickly took a toll on his batting, cutting short his prime faster than anyone expected. Didn’t help that he added some weight around the midsection.
I don’t know if it was the captaincy, but his dip in form sure did coincide with him being captain. So you may be right. It was very sad. Loved him growing up, tried to pattern my game after him.
There were news at that time about Lara was on the opposite side to him. Not sure ..... Any how his career ended sooner than expected. Missing the big flash square drive/cuts on the offside.
I remember watching Richardson at the Gabba in a warm up game against a Queensland side that featured McDermott, Thompson, Rackemann and Maguire as the pace attack. He put them to the sword with ridiculous ease including several exquisite hook shots onto the old dog track. The harder they tried the harder he hit them. A nice guy to boot, probably too nice for the captaincy though. Thanks for the memories.
Guy who oversee the decline of West Indies Cricket. One of the worst captains , he could never groom new fast bowlers or Batsman and also ended Desmond Haynes career, while He was much needed for 95 marquee series against Australia
That was beautiful to watch...
So much memories.
Thank you Richie
Wonderful player of Hook/pull shot & powerful square & cover drive. Treat to watch. Brave enough to bat without helmet in those days.

Hardly typical. He was among the best. Only Viv was better than him. Greenidge and Richie better than anyone they had.
One of my favourite windies batsman
We should see him when he started his career, devastating batsman in mid 80s. He was more conservative player after captaincy
This was excellent 👍.
He’s the most UNDERRATED West Indian batsmen I’ve seen.
Can you do a compilation of exquisite Carl Hooper shots.

Most stylish cricketer
Especially with that hat.

A great player; best shot: the deliberate drive down the wrong line.
Why he didn't wear helmet

Why are you bitter at Richie? He took the place of one of your country men? Tek that!!
