  • I've been enjoying backyard axe and knife throwing for years, and I decided it was finally time to build a serious target. I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out, and I think you'll enjoy it too if you build one. THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL, but rather a brief intro to my target, my throwers, and basic throwing skills.

I recently went to an axe throwing place here in AZ for a birthday party. I was surprised how easy it was to pick up. It was a great time.

Great video. Thanks for including what you're throwing and how you built your stand. Really cool.

Good stuff. Nothing like throwing hawks. I might have to look at knives. It’s almost as fun as archery and a lot easier to master.

I like your throwing target stand. Hardest part for me is finding the rounds (tree cross sections) to build it. Totally awesome.

Thanks hun. I just ordered a set of the throwing Hawks, and also got a fast Hawk coming. When did about the stars in the competition. Looks like stars are out of stock. Could be fun for the family. Thanks

Have anyone tried the Thorn style throwing with hatchets? It may have a different name that is more proper, but it is basically a 1/4 turn throw. I have had good success throwing knives with it and distance can very without counting steps. Just wondering if it works.

I find a two-handed overhead technique works best for me. Also for the beginners, you don't need to throw the hawk or axe nearly as hard as you think you need to. The weight and momentum is more than enough to get it to stick. It's a lot easier to be consistent using a gentle, easy throw.
For the knives and hawks that you removed the handles and paracord, what about using sport tape? Maybe wrap it like a hockey stick or baseball ball for some extra grip? Or is that not needed?

Good input. I prefer nothing on the handles, but that's me. I could see sport tape being a nice addition for some.

Did you ever break the shed window?

Never have, nope. I always put a protective cover over it before I throw though.

Check your local classified sites. You can sometimes find free, or cheap firewood for sale still in rounds like these.

Can any tomahawk , hatchet, axe be a throwing device? Probably a dumb question lol just curious on what to start with. And where to buy them. Home Depot ? Big 5? I do enjoy the thud.

The short answer is yes, but be prepared for some breaks if it's not designed for throwing. I suggest following the links I provided in the video description. Those are all durable, well-balanced throwers.
