Atari 2600 was my childhood. Adventure is still a favorite of mine to this day. The best part is the Atari Vault collection for PC has a level randomizer for Adventure. Replayability! I actually thought of the idea years earlier and it actually happened. One of the best games ever.

I’m impressed that you can enjoy anything from this era given your age. I was born in the early 80’s and I didn’t enjoy playing ATARI at my older cousin’s house when the ATARI was still common in many households. The NES was my first console and even so, I find those games hard to go back to. While I still have my original NES I find that if I do any retro gaming it’s on my SNES or, occasionally, SEGA CD/32X.

I like that slinky worm animation in worm war. it looks surprisingly fluid at a glance

Missile Command was the packed in game with my Atari 2600 when I bought it in 1986. The sound is really nice. Breakout is really good on the Atari 2600 because you can play them with paddles. Even if paddles are a bit jittery, you still have analog paddles when other consoles gives your pushbutton controls.

Good point about breakout being nice with analog! I play Arkanoid a lot on my Famicom and it definitely would be better with analog than with the d pad

My Favorite Atari 2600 game is Hero. The one where you enter different caves with your helicopter style backpack. I had tons of fun with Hero. River Raid, Solaris and Moon Patrol were great if you like shooters. Centipede, Kaboom, Commando, Pitfall 2, Berzerk, MegaMania, Demon Attack, Pete Rose Baseball and bump n Jump also come to mind. There were so many great titles on the 2600.

Good list. I haven’t played worm war. I’ll have to check it out. Activision and iMagic were really hood third party developers. Demon Attack, Atlantis, Cosmic Ark are great iMagic games that are also fairly common. For Activision, Chopper Command, Kaboom!, Keystone Kapers, Enduro, Stampede, Seaquest and Frostbite are some favorites. Pitfall II and River Raid are two excellent games that I would recommend highly. I would also suggest Battlezone, Frogger, Qbert, and The Empire Strikes Back. Sorry for the long post but I could really keep going on and on.

I’ve played kaboom and qbert on my Atari, but I don’t have any of those others! I’ll have to check them out! And yeah worm war 1 is definitely worth playing!

Speaking as someone who grew up on these, I have some different favorites. I did spend alot of time on Missle Command and Yar's Revenge, but also Berzerk, Warlords, and Asteroids. (I have a load of other games that I played, of course. If you have Warlords and never really checked it out, it is essentially Breakout meets castle defense/offense.)

Berzerk is pretty fun. I haven't played Warlords, maybe I'll check it out

Do youself a favour and play Solaris. It is a complex space fighting game featuring some of the best graphics and 3D effects on the Atari 2600.
It looks and plays so good, you would expect it to run on an Atari 800 XL but it's the humble Atari 2600 with a whopping 128 Bytes of RAM.
If you are into multiplayer games then give Warlords a chance. It is a blast at partys, especially with 4 players at those paddle controllers.
An updated homebrew version of this game exists called Medieval Mayhem and it is even better when played with your mates.

The best paddles I've found that are nice and tight with controls that i use with my modded Atari 2600 came from my Atari Flashback.... Love them

Nice! Is Ms. Pac-Man better than the 2600 version of Pac-Man?

It'd be So Difficult for myself to narrow it down to top 5, when it comes to rating upper tier likeability based Atari 2600 games.
Simply too many that I basically enjoy equally, whether it's Championship Soccer ⚽️ or Spider Fighter.

SuperMan is by far the MOST advanced game ever made for the Atari 2600 system but you should watch some of the youtube walk thoughts before you try to play it! you can beat it in less then 1min. I've seen it done in 38 seconds. there are 21 city screen blocks. learn to use the 5 screens of the subway. like ALL subways its the short cuts to the 21 screen city blocks!

I never understood why everyone loves Adventure and places it so high on their ranking lists. Yes, it was ground breaking at the time being the first "open world" game but it didn't age well. I place it down there with Atari's ET and Superman!

Wow this might be the first time I’ve seen someone say they’d rank adventure so low! What games would you say are some of the best on the Atari?

Break Out would be better if the ball slowed down. The ball speeds up to fast to keep playing the game
