I grew up in Leeds in 1950/60 and the market there sold everything, including pigs trotters and our favourite sheeps heads. My mum made an excellent stew with a sheep's head and loads of vegetables. Other favourites were tongue, rabbit and at Christmas chicken.
We have a small indoor market in our town where there's family butchers and fruit and veg etc. These businesses should be treasured. The food is so much better and it's nice to be served, rather than grabbing stuff off supermarket shelves. 😊
You should do a tour of the Aston, Lozells, Perry Barr, you will get the shock of your life. There is a game at Villa Park Saturday at 1ish so lively time to visit.
@charisse234 those areas have declined over the last 30 years. Those areas Perry Barr in particular used to be very salubrious but now as a result of economic decline, the areas look very run down. A lot of homeless, crackheads, litter, poverty, crime etc. One who lived there in the 1980s left and came back would get a surprise when they visit. Lack of jobs and opportunities and gangs too.
I used to go down the market in the early nineties, when I was single an living on me own ,the market guys were all brummies an fantastic lads, they would give me five or six chicken breasts for a fiver , sometimes seven, I remember a brilliant bloke on the veg market, his name was Carl , I think he was Jewish , hey that guy looked after me when I was on my arse , he would give me enough veg to last the week for 2p...respect. Where Has our market gone ? To many aliens.
I thought the market was amazing, the fish stalls reminded me of fish stalls in Spain. I vaguely remember markets like that when I was a kid and they used to sell china tea sets and throw them up in the air. Everything is so intermingled now. But I’m so glad you went back after it was closed before. If I lived there I would definitely get my fruit and vegetables there as opposed to the supermarket. Thanks Dave.
Interesting how the some of outdoor market traders covered their faces up when your camera went past? Looks like they’re used to doing that 😉 just saying what I saw 😀
It’s freezing cold and they are working outdoors , you have general public with balaclavas on but if it’s a brown person it’s sus 😂😂shooing your racist
never seen so much food in all my life, no one will starve in birmingham. Where i live now i don't see a fraction of this food in the supermarket or local shop. When i lived there it was english stall holders, as for the meat hall i felt sick looking at that, i can't walk past the butchers shop in my town without heaving. The rag market used to be half empty of stalls.
Love the old style markets Dave ,they will still get the visitors but will they make enough sales to keep it going at the decent prices they charge but brilliant, thanks as always
Nice to see pearce’s shellfish stall. Eaten many oysters from there, gorgeous with a bit of squeezed lemon and Tabasco, it’s a pity a some point the scumbag council will sell the land to build another shed load of crappy apartments for nobody to live in.
Wow! I live in Birmingham and have worked in the city centre on and off for years, I worked at Selfridges so not far from the rag market and used to go in often but not for a few years now. I cannot believe how much it has changed, the fruit market used to be full of cheeky brunmie men, having a bit of banter with the customers, they have all gone! bloody hell it’s like a fruit market in another place in the world! it’s just not the same place at all, tbh I wouldn’t spend a penny on the fruit and vegetables down there now, I would in the indoor market, but give it a few more years and it will end up the same. Thanks for the upload, been good to see how it is now, but I have to admit It’s been bittersweet viewing, 🤦♀️ you’ve been great as always Dave, really appreciate your content 👍🤗🇬🇧
I remember walking round there when I was younger, great little insight, great video x

Deanhowell so tell me what's the issue with Aston.Lozells.and Perry Barr? Why would he get the shock of his life?
