I sold mine, because I thought the body would be too small for the lower GDAE tuning. Now I kind of regret it. But then again, I have a whole bunch of other TGs… 😂 Great video! Give a good impression of the really nice tone of the instrument. Perfect beginner‘s TG, I’d say.
Since the guitar is exactly how the guitar came out the box, was there no difficulty in seating the heavier strings in the nut slots? Nice demo, by the way. Edit: it's working well without saddle slots, so I'd usually leave that alone, but that sharpness at the 12th fret could be due to the heavier strings so you may need a compensated saddle. That pro setup is necessary. I look forward to hearing the results.
Thanks Markharwood. Yes, a compensated saddle is a great idea. I may have to get that done. Surprisingly, the heavier gauge strings fit right into the nut slots. Later my tech friend filed it a little bit to make it even better.
No it's not a con. That is a good way to make a guitar, mostly for reasons of tone. The 12-fret construction is one of my criteria for buying a guitar.
I have mixed feelings about it as well. I find that I don't play it that much. It might be because I have it tune GDAE. The bass response is not so good. I think I am going to tune it CGDA and see if it responds better and has a better tonal balance.
@@tenorguitartime Actually I do like it better with the Chigago tuning. It almost has a dulcimer feel to it. I keep mine mostly because it is such a great size to grab and play something on.
I picked up one of these and restrung it DGBE. If only it has a wider nut I would be totally in love but the small neck is proving hard to get used to coming from a ukulele.
Would GDAE tuning on this instrument work well while sitting in with a blues/rock band for both chords and soloing? Is DGBE better? Granted it would have some sort of pickup installed on it.
Hi Ben, it's a very small guitar and doesn't have much projection on the low strings. For blues rock I would probably want something with a bigger body. The Kala sound best played quietly and softly for most part. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the kind words. I agree, it's a good instrument to get started on since it sounds good but doesn't cost too much.

What string set did you use for this?
42, 32, 18, 12
So its basically an octave mandolin?
yes, exactly
Is it a con that the guitar only has twelve frets to the body?
Maybe it's a slight negative to only have 12 frets clear of the body, but since it's a small instrument, it seems okay and appropriate for the size.

Thanks for this. I have one I bought months ago and had mixed feelings about it.
