Pedal Point Walking Harmony by Tenor Guitar Time with Todd GDAE
มุมมอง 1884 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello GDAE musicians. Try out this pedal point idea to add movement and harmonic interest to your chords. You probably already use this even if you don't refer to it as "pedal point". This is when one note (or notes) is sustained through several changes in harmony that may be consonant or dissonant with it. Don't worry about chord names, just move one note while keeping the rest of the chord no...

Was singing along to this as I listened. Good job.
thanks! Great song!
Thanks very much Todd for another great video, take care, David.
Thanks David! I appreciate the feedback.
Nobody strings up an octave mandolin in octaves. You need to put matched pairs on there. How's the workmanship? Semi-hollow with a block down the middle? Fretwork? How's the action? Is the neck straight and true? What size frets? Can you play some modal Irish/Celtic stuff? What does bridge pickup sound like? Or both pickups. Can you crank up the Princeton and run through some Keith Richards rock & roll vamps? 5ths tuning is great for that.
A beautiful tune like hearing on the beach of an island somewhere in the world.
Thanks Jackie
Is there an advantage of GDAE tuning over CGDA? I just got my first acoustic tenor guitar and am wondering what tuning to use.
Hi Ryan, The choice of tuning really depends on what frequency range you prefer. As you know, all fingerings, scales, etc that you know on CGDA can be used on GDAE (fifths tuning). I like GDAE the best because it has nearly the entire range of a regular acoustic guitar. My lowest GDAE note is the same as fretting the low E string on a regular guitar at the third fret. You only lose E, F, and F# notes. I want a strong bass sound. For certain application, CGDA will be more useful. Say you are playing with a bass and a regular guitar player. They already have the low end covered, so by using CGDA you will have your own, higher, frequency range to contrast with the other instruments. A lot of people chose Chicago tuning because it's the same as the high strings of a guitar. They are happy with the familiarity transfering their guitar knowledge over to the tenor. But, their lowest note is the same as the open D string on a regularly tuned guitar (not very low). One more thing. I like GDAE because I used to play mandolin, so all the notes, chords and scales are in the same place and Called by the same name! I try them all but always come back to GDAE tuning
Great stuff! Thanks! GDAE!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback!
and the encouragement!
Tenor guitars are such a small market to target so thank you for posting your excellent videos. You will soon be at one thousand subs!
I'm really loving the Chicago tunning please do more big thanks for all your tutorials
Thanks Bev. I will try to make more Chicago videos asap. I'm happy that you like them!
You just gained a subscriber my friend, you’re a great teacher, any chance you can do some more g&r stuff (I know this is originally bob dylan) maybe don’t cry,November rain or maybe some lynyrd skynard, tuesdays gone or the ballad of Curtis loew, simple man Sorry for the weird song requests and I’m not trying to tell you what you should do it’s just hard to find tenor guitar teachers as well as you,I graduated high school last year and picked up an old harmony tenor arch top to try and learn a new instrument,I’ve played 6 string guitar since I was 15 and some mandolin,I was having trouble on the tenor guitar until I came across your channel,I normally put a capo on the 7th fret and use mandolin shapes(I’m tuned to cgda) Keep up the good work my friend👍🏻 Also maybe some old time music like big rock candy mountain or wildwood flower;) sorry I’m getting ahead of myself I have a strange taste in music
Hello Albino Chicken Wings. Thanks for subscribing and the nice words! I am happy that this channel is useful for you. Thanks for song suggestions. I'll look into those songs and see if I can get a good lesson going. Thanks for supporting! Keep picking!
cgda is my favourite tuning, really zingy. Also, the same fingerings as gdae can be used and the only difference is it sounds slightly lower. It's great for picking. Thanks very much from a new subscriber in England.
Thanks David. "Zingy" is a good description of CGDA. Thanks for subscribing! Even though I have mostly GDAE lessons, as you know you can certainly still use them for CGDA-same fingerings
Nicely played. I have one. After a while i put it in DGBE for the chord options. I prefer the shorter scale of a mandolin for a 5ths tuning. However you work those chords very well.
Thanks Stephen. Yes. I agree that the long scale can make it hard to reach some chord shapes.
Yes I have one and it’s easy to play I love it too.
Great tune! Glad I found this channel.
Thanks!
Geez bro. Hold the freaking thing still long enough for people to see it. Flipping it and spinning it around nonstop is crazy. Making people dizzy. How frustratingly discouraging to want to buy one. . GEEZ.
So sorry to bum you out, man! Check out their website for nice, still pictures. Eastwoodguitars.com
I have the similar one, and love it! I'll use it on the music festival in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka this October.
Cool! What tuning will you play in?
The shorter scale allows you to use heavier gauge strings-especially the A @ 0.013?-without breaking?
The .013 on the A string hasn't broken, but it is too tight. I will definitely change it out for a .011 or .012
@@tenorguitartime Thanks for that information
I have that Kala, love it, thanks for demo!
I like these little guitars, nice body and scale length. Personally I think the head stock is a little bulky looking and as with virtually all mass produced lower end guitars, they are over-braced but … they were great value for the money.
I agree. It's not perfect, but super handy for traveling
so happy to find your video :D I've been owning the very same Fender tenor tele for a few years, but I haven't learnt how to play it. Do you have lessons on how to play this tenor guitar? Thanks in advance!
Hi. Yes, I have almost 100 lessons on my page. Check it out. More lessons on Patreon as well. Look for tenor guitar time. Thanks!
@@tenorguitartime thank you!!! i will look up your lessons for tenor tele :D yay!
What model bigs fix is that.?
Hi Fred. I can't remember. It's been a few years. But the last I looked, on his site, there were two models to choose from. It's explained clearly on his website-which model to pick for which Bigsby. Check out bigsfix.com. It's a major improvement!
Your playing made me want to buy one but they are 1k used! Ugh.
Their value shot up because Fender hardly made any. They should make more. Thanks for the kind words!
Wish I could see your picking hand. Sounds great! Did you play with a loop? Or are you playing both parts? NICE!
Thank you. I think I put the chords on a looper pedal first and then played over it. I'll try to show more picking as we go forward..
Pretty tone!
So its basically an octave mandolin?
yes, exactly
Love it, thanks you!

Very cool, Man!
Thanks Steven.
Hey Todd _ these chord shapes and the CAGED system are really helpful. On my acoustic I dont get much past the 12th fret...maybe I need an electric tenor guitar! I'd like to use this to learn to play arpeggios so I'll look for your video on this topic. Thanks for the lessons
Hi Jay, yes electric tenors are awesome with the extended range and with how easy they are to play. I think that the Eastwood Classic tenor plays with the feel of an acoustic with these ease of an electric, and is maybe the most all around practical model for me. I haven't played them, but the Fanner tenor guitars look cool. I think they are based in S. Africa and have reasonable prices. Some of their models look really small though. This might be good or bad... I will posting on Patreon a CAGED chord shape sheet with each Major, minor and 7th inversion. Thanks for the question!

I've noticed behind you the Astrojet Tenor a model that reminds the Gibson SG ,i was interested to buy one , and i have waited and waited to see if Eastwood would have made some for left handed. Nothing to do , now , in 2024, the Astrojet is on the catalogue again , after some years when it went out of the market, but ,as it seems , left handed is not available . Too bad!
Hi Patrick, I just checked at Eastwood, and yes you are right-no left handed astrojets. Maybe because this current run was so small.?? It's a very solid instrument. Maybe they will make some lefties in the future!
Nice playing!
Thanks for the kind words, Penelope!
Awesome. I'm gonna learn this. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Coop! Fun tune to play with all the chord changes.
Sounds more like Marc Ribot than Irving Berlin
Thanks for telling me about Marc Ribot. I had never heard of him before. How did I miss his music? I appreciate the tip off!
Thanks for putting out tenor guitar lessons like this! I'm a mandolin player who started with tenor a little while ago and your videos are really helpful to me.
I do love the tenor but my major problem with it is that you can’t escape that high string sound, any chord requires it so its always ringing out and over powering the other strings.
useful
Using a fender strat with the E A strings removed, so im using DGBE and bought the chord bible. If i see im sticking with this, ill buy an eastman
ID also suggest getting the tenor guitar chord bible for your tuning, i got the DGBE one, this this book is AMAZING, they are to the point and a good thing for beginners it recommends what finger to use. They have one for the other tunings too. Its almost a requirement to own this book lol. Im trying to transition from 6 string to tenor as a finger/travis picker, seems to be working perfectly.
Mistake on exercises 3 and 4. The description of the beat cycle is incorrect. It should be 3-3-3-3-4. If you are trying to learn this pattern, emphasize the first note of each of the 4 groups of 3 beats, and also on the first note of the last 4-beats. This is a contrasting rhythm to the steady 4/4 on the metronome. The greatest emphasis of the entire cycle is the note when the metronome and your picking pattern hit the first 1 note of the 16-beat cycle exactly in time🍀
Sweet
Thanks, please keep your channel going almost 1000 subs…
Thanks foxfish! Will Do!
Watching from Japan, it’s not easy to get EASTWOOD instruments, but I love this one very much! I’d like to hear your completely arranged songs.
Hi Jackie, thanks for your reply. I like this instrument too. It's my favorite right now. More complete tune arrangements coming soon-There are some complete songs in my Tenor Guitar Music Playlist.
@@tenorguitartime Thank you for reply. Looking forward to hearing your songs!
This is gonna be long, so bear with me.... I got my first Eastwood Astrojet after they were discontinued. It was a white one with the Bigsby tail and whammy bar. I kept it to Chicago tuning. (E B G D). I have big hands, and "Sausage" fingers, so it was rather difficult for me to play. I put it away for a while, but then decided to pick it up again and have another go at it. I'm still having some difficulty playing it, but I'm not giving up, and I'm having fun along the way. Anyhoo.... in case you haven't heard the news, Eastwood has made some new Astrojet tenor guitars but in VERY LIMITED EDITIONS! (24 standards and 20 deluxe editions) When I learn about this, I went and immediately got THREE more! One is the standard one in red, (NO WHAMMY BAR) and two deluxe editions. GET THIS: The new deluxe editions have TWO volumes, TWO tones, AND P-90 PICK UPS! (I HAD TO HAVE THOSE!) Two of my guitars are in Chicago tuning, and two are in Arkansas tuning, like yours. (G D A E) I'm glad to see that you have yours in Arkansas tuning, and I hope you're not getting any flack from tenor snobs who look down at both Chicago and Arkansas tunings. (People who tend to tune their tenor guitars like mandolins, or violas can be very elitist and look down on others who choose the tunings we chose) I sort of wished you had distorted your guitar, because these things sound gnarly when distorted, but I understand that it might not be your style. (As somebody who plays punk rock, it's my style, though) And, as people commented earlier, the shape of the body is more based on the old Guild guitars, than they are a Gibson SG. (I own quite a few SGs so I don't know why Gibson would care about this. Sheesh. Maybe Gibson should go back to making the tenor SG. I mean Neko Case has certainly popularized it, so it would be a good product for them to come out with. I'd buy one) I find the whammy bars bothersome, only because I don't use them. I feel they're only good for Smoke On The Water, surf music, and maybe a couple of Jimi Hendrix or Van Halen covers, none of which I have any desire to play. (Plus I already have a Fender Stratocaster with a whammy bar, so if I really wanna play Smoke On The Water, I'll use that instead) So, to all you people who missed out the first time around, Eastwood has the Astrojet again, but get them quick! Thanks for the cool video, and for being brave enough to tune your tenor guitar to Arkansas tuning. (Highly recommended for a beginner, or somebody getting used to a tenor guitar for the very first time. Chicago tuning is also easy, but some people might not take to it immediately, even though it's easy to master if you remember your early guitar lessons where you learned "Folk" or "Cowboy" chords)
I hate to break it to you but the "People who tend to tune their tenor guitars like mandolins" are NOT going to disagree with your GDAE tuning....because that's how a mandolin is tuned...GDAE. Also Fiddle / violin is also GDAE....It is also considered "low irish" for the tenor Banjo. :)
Or are you talking EADG low to hi like on a Bass?
@@cgreeneblue Remember that with guitars, up is down and low is high. It can be difficult to comprehend if one is dyslexic. Think about how a regular standard guitar is tuned, with e being the lowest of strings. (Bottom is top)
Thanks! I like the sound of the Astrojet so much, but I find I'm not using it so much lately due to the narrow neck. My fingers are a little too wide, and my technique maybe could be cleaner, If I could really use the finger tips. You are right-they sound great distorted!
Thanks for this. I have one I bought months ago and had mixed feelings about it.
I have mixed feelings about it as well. I find that I don't play it that much. It might be because I have it tune GDAE. The bass response is not so good. I think I am going to tune it CGDA and see if it responds better and has a better tonal balance.
@@tenorguitartime Actually I do like it better with the Chigago tuning. It almost has a dulcimer feel to it. I keep mine mostly because it is such a great size to grab and play something on.
I was looking for an electric Baritone uke a few years when I came across the Tenor Tele. It's my favourite instrument that't I've ever owned. Love it!
It's an awesome, and solid guitar. Every tuning I use with it sounds good!
Love the new video format, the fretboard and hands are clear and easy to follow. 🙂
