This is the best instructional video I've seen. I found it thanks to your fans. Every other video i watched said to blow/huff air over the mouthpiece, but i was never able to. I thought i was doing it wrong
By far the best instructional video I've seen. Most just tell you "Make it sound like this with practice" but doesn't tell you the fundamentals on how to actually use the call. GREAT video!
Scott Ellis It absolutely has. I'm new to turkey hunting and I've already seen improvement thanks to your tutorial. I've gotta keep practicing for the next few months, and I'm looking forward to getting out there and getting my first turkey this year. God bless!
I know that this is quite a long time since this video was made. This is the best instructional video that I have seen by far. I was taught this way when I was fifteen. My neighbor at the time was an avid turkey hunter. He started making his own diaphragm calls when he was younger because there were none on the market being sold. I learned by doing exactly how you are showing. Thank you sir. Enjoyed watching.
Great tutorial. Have been trying to learn to use a mouth call for a few days and this video makes it as understandable as it can get. Thanks for the help happy hunting.
Thank You so much! I have always struggled with this and most videos only show techniques when you have mastered how to make the sound already. I was struggling with the position of the call and never realized that the diaphragm is the key to it! Also panting like a dog really helped me also with knowing i was in the right direction....with a little more practice i will sound better then i already do! Thanks again for taking the time to make this video.
AWESOME VIDEO! I used your signature series call today in PA just to see what response I could get. I love this call. I heard the bird I got on last year after first using your call. I am assuming it was him as this bird was roosted maybe 100 yards from this spot. I heard him gobble and moved up closer. I did a few of your yelps, and the woods around me blew up with hens, and jakes, and the big boy. This will be my number one go to call. This video helps out a lot, and added with your mouth call magic dvd is about the best thing out there to help out average joe turkey hunters. Thanks again!!
I so want to be able to add the diaphragm to my arsenal, but I just can't get past my fear of somehow choking on the thing. I'm sure that sounds ridiculous, but as a young boy, my brother nearly choked to death while we were having dinner. He turned more colors than a strutting Tom. Scared me to death. Here I am 40 years later, and I'm still haunted by it. I think I heard Cuz Strickland mention one time that he used to use dental floss by putting it through a section of the tape when he first started in order to not mistakenly swallow the call. I may give that a try. Thanks for the tutorial.
@@HuntQuestwithScottEllis Thanks for the reply Scott. Just a little update. I actually took a small needle and some thread and ran the thread thru the front right corner of the tape. I then cut the thread to around 7 inches or so to have just to give me a little sense of assurance. This has actually allowed me within the last couple of days to get comfortable with it to the point I'm just tossing it in and getting proper seat placement of the call. So basically it has worked like a charm in getting past that anxiety that I had. I figure another week and I'll just remove the thread altogether. Thanks again for replying and best of luck to you.
Great video Scott! I laughed a little when you said the cluck was easy because when I tried to incorporate the lips to make it more realistic everything went down hill! I am getting there though!
Sorry it messed you up to start with buddy! But glad you stuck with it. I do NOT recommend bending the frame. Totally changes side tension on the call and can change the sound completely.
Scott, your videos messed me up last season, but my calling has improved drastically after "learning to ride a bike" again. Will Primos used to say bend your frame if it doesn't fit. My pallet is wide and shallow as well. With the exact tolerances found in diaphragm calls today, do you recommend bending the frame?
I know it’s been awhile since this video was made. But I’m still having trouble with making the front end Yelp and adding the rasp. Before I’ve always used the word “chirp”. I could use some extra tips on making a proper Yelp. Any tips? Thanks again
Scott do you have a suggestion to someone that has been using a diaphragm call for a wile but having problems almost like going threw target panic shooting a bow I need to get back to the basics and relearn how to use the call. Maybe go back to a single reed ?your opinion would be greatly appreciated
It's ok Scott I'm probably over thinking it and trying to do to much I'll just keep practicing and get back to the fundamentals of using a diaphragm call
Question Scott. First time turkey hunter and I purchased your call. When trimming the call, are you trimming the left and right sides of the horseshoe? Or are you also trimming the back of the horseshoe as well? I got a month to figure this out for turkey season in northwest Florida. Thanks! Brian
Frame size depends on your pallet. Most will use a standard size mouth. Tape should be touching your teeth as they help to secure side to side movement of the call in the roof of your mouth.
Almost like I'm not using my diaphragm I'm just forcing air so the call makes a sound I think a lot of my problem is I used to go to small town calling competitions with just my natural voice and they way I call is not the same as if I was using a diaphragm it's been really hard to be efficient with both
I don't know how to explain it Scott. When I call with my natural voice it's like I don't use my diaphragm. When I put in a diaphragm call I don't think I use my diaphragm since I don't use it when I call with my natural voice.
Yes sir. You can trim the tape. Just cut a very slight amount around 1/16" at time until you get a good fit. Otherwise if you cut too much you'll have to re-tape the call. Best of luck!
Hey man I just got a mouth call about a week or two ago at a NRA banquet. I asked my uncle bc he is part of turkey thugs and I was wondering how to use this. I started to watch this and did every thing you said and mine wouldn't work. I got a flextone mouth call. If u could tell me what I'm doing wrong I would much appreciate it.
I think that is what i did to mess up the calls i got. i bent the frame on them and now i am getting a huge rasp on them even on a call with very little cuts. Oh well looks like its time to go back to the store i guess.
This is the best instructional video I've seen. I found it thanks to your fans.
Every other video i watched said to blow/huff air over the mouthpiece, but i was never able to. I thought i was doing it wrong
I'm thrilled it helped!

This video is pure gold for turkey calling. By far the best explanation and tutorial I've seen.
JD A thank you. Hope it helped

Thx!
Doing the sounds outside of the call has been really helpful, thank you. (I know this is an old video but hey)
Glad it helped bud! Thank you for sharing.
wow man! Thanks to you I learned how to use a turkey call in a couple of minutes. Really appreciate it!
You bet! Glad to hear it buddy!
little lizard climbing the tree behind you at 7:12. this helped me out a bunch. thank you
LOL! Glad to hear it!
Great tutorial. Have been trying to learn to use a mouth call for a few days and this video makes it as understandable as it can get. Thanks for the help happy hunting.
Awesome great to hear!
Great advice and this really helped my get the rasp in my call. I am new to using diagram calls. Thx, Scott!
+FletchMan great to hear!!!!
Glad my videos and call helped buddy!

+Fishkeeper21 Glad it helped! Your welcome!
Glad to hear it buddy. I do not recommend bending the frame as it will change the side tension on the reeds, resulting in tone and rasp change.

I'm thrilled it helped! Good luck this spring!
Awesome! Your very welcome!
Thank you! I decided to try mouth calling and was getting very frustrated. I took your advice about trimming the tape and it works!
Great to hear! Good luck!
Great video! Any videos to purchase? Larry
Yes sir. I have two dvds. Mouth Call Magic 1 and 2. Find me on Facebook and shoot me message. Hunt Quest with Scott Ellis. Thank you sir!
Aewsoem video, really helped me get my call down. I watched the NWTF 2015 calling competition too. Awesome stuff
+tbone0785 Thanks!

That's a hard one buddy. I'm not sure how to get around that fear. You can use a tube call, but it's not hands free operation.

I'm glad you figured it out! 🦃
Excellent explination. Best I have seen yet. I just bought a zink triple reed and I was spitting all over myself until this video haha
+Frankie Fanelli good deal!
kind of like a goose or duck call with using your diaphragm. great video I picked it up in no time! Thank you for your time and the video.
+Brad Neumann Awesome Brad! Your very welcome!
Great tutorial! I love the attention to detail. Thank you!
+Paul Matzinger Thanks bud!
Even the old turkey hunters can get a lot out of this. Great video.
Thanks Jason. I appreciate it.
Great video Scott! I laughed a little when you said the cluck was easy because when I tried to incorporate the lips to make it more realistic everything went down hill! I am getting there though!
:) keep after it buddy!
Because of you I got this down in 15 min
Glad it helped Andrew!!!
omg thank you so much i can now do the yelp but i cant get the raspy ness quite yet but before i sounded like a idiot thank you
Glad to hear it helped! Keep after it!
Great video with good help!
Thank you!

I don't recommend bending the frame as it will change the side tension. Thus changing the tone of the call.

Have you seen my app turkey tech? Give it a shot.
I bought the Wood haven beginner call
Awesome! Thanks!
I've never stared at a man's mouth with such envy before. Great advice!
Lol thanks.
What does the hand next to the mouth do to benefit the call, some sort of ventriloquism?
Spot on yes. Throw the sound. And amplify as well.
Scott do you have a suggestion to someone that has been using a diaphragm call for a wile but having problems almost like going threw target panic shooting a bow I need to get back to the basics and relearn how to use the call. Hard to say bud. What problems are you encountering?
It's ok Scott I'm probably over thinking it and trying to do to much I'll just keep practicing and get back to the fundamentals of using a diaphragm call

I trim equal amount all the way around the diameter of the call.
So you are just pressing the call to the roof of your mouth with your tongue not putting your tongue on the reeds, right?
Yes you're putting your tongue to the reeds not the tip of your tongue the big part of your tongue flat
Should any of the tape be touching your teeth? And how big/small should the frame be?
Frame size depends on your pallet. Most will use a standard size mouth. Tape should be touching your teeth as they help to secure side to side movement of the call in the roof of your mouth.
Almost like I'm not using my diaphragm I'm just forcing air so the call makes a sound I think a lot of my problem is I used to go to small town calling competitions with just my natural voice and they way I call is not the same as if I was using a diaphragm it's been really hard to be efficient with both
I'm not quite following you Dbuckner.
I don't know how to explain it Scott. When I call with my natural voice it's like I don't use my diaphragm. When I put in a diaphragm call I don't think I use my diaphragm since I don't use it when I call with my natural voice.
Idk how to explain it. It's like I don't know how to use my diaphragm
Try laying on your back and run your calls. You'll have to activate your diaphragm to force the air. It should help.
this really helped me
Glad it helped buddy!
I have the same call. My uncle have it to me with a DVD. I think he won it also.
+Collin Palzewicz Good deal! I hope it helped!
"Pant on the call" did it for me... Starting to actually sound like a turkey now lol
+Kelby Swartz great!
What you you suggest to be done if the call doesn't fit right and chokes the user? Can it be cut down?
It could be a million things buddy. You'd have to explain what you mean by "not working".
what do you do about the gagging
There not alot you can do bud. Run the call as forward as you can in your mouth or possibly try s tube call.
I think that is what i did to mess up the calls i got. i bent the frame on them and now i am getting a huge rasp on them even on a call with very little cuts. Oh well looks like its time to go back to the store i guess.
Yes sir. I don't recommend bending the frame. It changes the side tension and can ruin a call.
i just sound like a dying rabbit I've tried for a month now and I'm giving up ill just use a box call
Switch to a different cut and reed combination. I sound terrible on most mouth calls but I sound great on a 3 reed combo cut.
🤘🤘
THANKS!
I keep gagging when putting the mouth call in the roof of my mouth lmao
Sorry to hear that. I'm not sure there's a fix for gag reflex....
I did too but turns out the tape on my call was too big I trimmed it down and no gag
Never understood why people over think something as simple as blowing a diaphragm.
Sometimes I think it's just the mechanics of it all.
9 1/2 min video...you need 9 1/2 hours of practice to even get close haha
Hahahah
