We rushed into this saga I forgot to change the green screen lol, It's gonna suck waiting for the next saga but please Sub and recommend other shows or musicals we have to check out plz (:
"Imagine when Oddyseus comes back" Like for real, I keep thinking how Odysseus has been away from home at war for 10 years, then sailing back he's delayed another by having to fight monsters, nature, the gods themselves. And then, when he gets home, the final thing standing in the way of him and Penelope is normal, average MEN, Oddyseus is going to absolutely rock their shit.
There is samples out there of upcoming songs that people did animatics for and they are absolutely sick. "Get into the water." and "King" are amazing. Favorite line from them: "Our only hope is strike him from the darkness. We know these halls the odds will be tilted." *from the darkness* "You don't think I know my own Palace? I BUILT IT!" *sword slash*
In the original text there are 108 suitors, so Odysseus- as much as he's faced and done in his time- would still have a time taking them all on at once
Everyone loves Athena pulling the "never cheated on his wife" card to instantly convince Hera. No one consides the immediate backlash as she has to face Zeus after doing _that_ to _him_ in what's canonically a fully packed coliseum of gods and mythical beings. Not until it happens :')
It would be cool if you guys could check out the animatics that the fandom has made. Especially for God Games, Neal illustrator and Anniflamma have made some incredible ones!
So fun fact about God Games!!! All the gods Zeus used all played a part in the Trojan War!!! Here is why they specifically would care about Odysseus’s case: Apollo - Apollo wasn’t on the Greek side, actually he was on the Troy side for all the war. However the reason he sided with Troy is because one of his priest prayed to Apollo asking for his aid. The priest had a daughter that basically Agamemnon personal slave. Agamemnon refused to give her back but eventually did after pissing off Achilles. The person that returned the daughter to the priest was Odysseus himself making sure she was back safely. Hephaestus - He was the Greek side and actually made Achilles new armor. It explains why he feels so upset about Odysseus betraying his soldiers. They were on the same side so of course he is mad that he would betray his brothers like that. Aphrodite - She literally started the Trojan War. Context: Gods were are the wedding of Achilles parents and they didn’t invite Eris, the goddess of discord. Pissed off she wasn’t invited to the wedding she made a golden apple and threw it between 3 goddess saying the golden apple was meant for the most beautiful goddess. Those goddess being Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Zeus doing the only smart thing, made someone else choose instead of him. Paris AKA the Prince of Troy, which he chose Aphrodite who would offer him Helen of Sparta as a bride despite the fact she was HAPPILY MARRIED. So why the feelings there are kind personal but I do think it’s a little hypocritical of her. Since Odysseus didn’t even wanna be there and wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for her. Ares - He was on the Trojan side. Because 1 I believe a lot of his children were on Troy’s side and 2 Aphrodite was on Troy’s side. Say what you will about Ares but he is always on his love’s side. Fun fact, the points Ares used were points that Remus and Romulus, Roman leaders, used to slander Odysseus’s name. Hera - Also Greek side for you know, being pissed that Paris didn’t chose her instead of Aphrodite. Now the reason why Hera asked Athena to give he 1 good reason why she care about Odysseus is because the heroes during this time were a “New Generation” of heroes. The previous generations being heroes like Theseus, Heracles, and Jason. The last time Hera helped a hero was Jason. She helped Jason so much she was even the reason why Jason got married to beautiful wife, Meada. For somewhat complicated reasons, Jason tries to marry another princess despite the fact he is ALREADY married to Meada and was planning to abandon their 2 sons. Safe to say Hera does NOT have a good history of Hero’s. Zeus - He was on Troy’s side. Which makes sense because Zeus is well known for you know, fucking around with mortals lives both literally and figuratively. So him messing with Odysseus’s life as much as he possibly can explains a lot. Okay WOW this was a lengthy text but this fact is my personal favorite fact about God Games because it just shows how Jorge is a writing genius and he has my respect for it.
ares being the one to say “is she dead?” is so important to me i swear. despite them being rivals and all, they’re still siblings. seeing your sibling (possibly) DIE is just generally shocking and haunting, especially with them being gods. plus, ares being a protector of woman just makes that pain worse, knowing he couldn’t protect his own sister. also, athena being zeus’s FAVORITE child yet zeus still willing to hurt her is just terrifying for ares, knowing that zeus doesn’t care for him or much at all likes him
Calypso hitting him with PTSD threefold is very 😬 when you consider that she only knows this from listening to his sleep talk while having nightmares. Also when Athena was convincing Hephaestus, you can hear Penelope's theme in the background when she talks about those who miss him. Super cool detail.
@@sexyschnidden9702 I think he noticed it from the video of Jorge pointing it out, yeah. And Casper noticed it off the bat when watching the livestream on Open Arms lolol
I always love the immediate reaction to Antinous' *first* line. "Fuck those guys" is such a gut reaction and it's amazing that Jorge captured it so quickly
First or whatever, really enjoy your commentary. Just some quotes from translations of the odessey, just so we all on the same page. And they're interesting. “In the nights, true, / he’d sleep with her in the arching cave - he had no choice - / unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing.” Calypso is singing with her “breathtaking voice” and weaving at her loom while Odysseus “sat on a headland, weeping as always, / wrenching his heart with sobs and groans and anguish, / gazing out over the barren sea through blinding tears.” "She lulls him, always, with soft seductive words, intending him to forget Ithaca. But Odysseus, who yearns for the mere sight of the smoke rising from his own country, only longs to die." It is a good discussion to have, even through adaptations. Wisdom saga is great.
WOAH WAIT WHAT TRANSLATION IS THIS. The one I read didn’t go further than “the two went into the cave for a night of passion” or something along those lines. I always thought that calypso fully forcing herself on ody was like an assumption based on the power difference and her keeping him trapped
@@akea-I think the reason why it is never explicit about what Calypso did to Odysseus in many version’s is three reason in my opinion. 1. Cheating was kinda normalized in a lot of Greek myths. Zeus and Poseidon for example. Known for their affairs. So a lot of a Greek heroes were like this too. So later writers would just assume Odysseus was a cheater too. 2. Certain writers from certain time periods probably couldn’t comprehend the idea of Odysseus being a victim like this. I think of a lot time periods where their thinking was like “A man can’t be a victim because he is man!!!” Completely ignoring that the whole point of the Odyssey is that Odysseus is victim of the gods throughout the whole damn story. 3. In some older translations of the Odyssey Circe and Calypso were describe as Odysseus’s “lover” but the text doesn’t support those claims. When you read it, it’s very clear that the story does NOT see them as Odysseus’s lover. However they were labeled as lovers because Ancient Greek didn’t really have a word to describe victim or survivors like this specifically. So their was confusions there too A lot of this time gets messy because this text so damn old and it doesn’t help a lot political leaders would use this text claiming family relations to these heroes as a political move. Mythology is messy like that 🤷♀️
@@akea- The first two are from robert fagles, the third from A.S kline. It is not uncommon for translations to be so explicit in the fact it was not consensual, or at the least, a bad thing, and that ody didnt enjoy his time there. Even when not plainly stated it can of course be figured due to the power dynamic of itself, just as zues's "lovers" are understood. It is interesting culture wise how for the time period ody was the husband of husband's, loyal to his wife in spirit amongst his less than faithful heroic peers. And that even rather far back, with calypso specifically, it is something he is subjected to, and pained by. A deeper understanding of circe coming later from my understanding due to our socital perseption of sa, especially against males.
Example of Jorge's attention to detail (may or may not have been pointed out before) : Ares' theme is the same melody as Athena's piano motif since they're both in charge of aspects of war, but his is played on a Chinese instrument (I forget the name) as a reference to The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Which now I think about it would be more Athena's thing since it's all about strategy, but never mind.
The erhu! One of the most beautiful instruments in my opinion. Also known as the Chinese fiddle, it sits on your lap and you play it upright, like a cello, using a two-sided bow in between two strings (I think). And yeah the fact that Ares and Athena share motifs is my favorite thing about God Games, which is saying a lot given that God Games is my favorite song in the whole musical and I love everything about it.
Great reaction video! always enjoy watching your reactions 'cause you always look like you're having a blast and genuine!! I didn't notice that even after watching the animatic so many times LOL
So, not so fun fact. When Calypso gives Odysseus the PTSD flashback. He's not hearing Penelope. He's hearing his mom because Calypso quoted her too. She said "I'll stay inside your heart" which his mom said in the underworld. She's literally quoting the 3 most important people he lost to death. And some people say you hear Eurylicus on the right becausr he was his right hand man, Polites on the left because that's where your heart is and his mom in the back because she was left behind.
