He can be so charged, but there has to be a Quid Pro Quo. We don't - yet - have any evidence that Thomas has done anything in exchange for these gifts, so currently we only know that Thomas has committed Behavior Unbecoming of his position. Normally in that sort of situation, the Republican Party would have helped oust Thomas so that the stink of corruption didn't rub off on them, but just at the moment the Republican Party has decided to embrace corruption as something they are all for. Still, don't be surprised if there isn't already an investigation underway, to see if there has been a Quid Pro Quo, because that's a lot of money to be paying out for nothing.

@@bettygreenhansen Exactly. With the past and current war by conservatives on the LGBTQ+ community, it is more than relevant. I also come from a very conservative background that has alienated gay people. That is why it matters when brave people speak up like Sarah just did. By pretending that LGBTQ+ people don’t matter, that their identities and life experiences are irrelevant, we contribute to the problem. Liberals too often can’t seem to grasp just how intolerant and vicious the far right can be toward this community. Liberals think they value all people and then act as if something like this is not relevant. It goes to show the damage done by ideological bubbles.

Then other judges, neurosurgeons and so on. Watching what is going on with the Supreme Court now breaks my heart, even when I am just a non-resident alien. And I am horrified not only at the extreme lack of ethics of Thomas and Alito. The way things happened with the nominations Kavannagh, 3 month before the election vs the nomination that was tried 9 month before the election the last year of Obama (I can’t remember who Obama’s candidate was) is absolutely unethical. Your comments about what judges should not say in public are right on. If I remember my high school civics class correctly, our supreme court justices in Canada are not allowed to declare their political sympathies in public, nor make any public speeches while active on the bench. Indeed, I would be hard pressed to name Supreme Court members. Only when they retire at the age of 75, do they write memoirs, accept guest speaking engagements and the like. Apolitical justices are a good thing!
