S&G's version is a sorrowful warning. This is the rage that the warning wasn't heard. David is a trained cantor, and it gives his voice that incredible power.
Great reaction! You hit the nail on the head. The original was a warning. This version, the warning was not heeded. Others from Disturbed you need to check out, is "The Light" and "A Reason To Fight". Powerful and meaningful pieces!
Disturbed -The Sound of Silence video has over 1 BILLION views in 8 YEARS. 1 Billion seconds is equal to 33 years. This means, that more than three almost four people, had to click play, every second of every day for 8 years. WOW!!!
I grew up in the era of Simon and Garfunkel and loved all their songs, including this one. BUT, I never really listened to the words until this version, it implels you to not just hear the song but to listen to the lyrics.
Disturbed is actually a Heavy Metal band. But no one can sing it like David does. This is the best version ever. That's why it has over 3 BILLION views. Amazing
David Draiman, and Disturbed are amazing. Their songs are all powerful, The Light, Don't Tell Me, Stricken, Into the Fire... There are so many. The Lyrics are always amazing... His voice is incredible, he is a trained Cantor and has an incredible range. They are definitely worth going down a rabbit hole for...
Disturbed is a heavy metal band, but they're not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. David Draiman trained as a cantor in his younger years, his grandfather was a famous cantor in Israel. But he decided on another path. He writes some of the songs, and most of the songs have deep meanings that speak to your heart and mind. I'm a 70 y.o. granny, and I totally am a huge fan. Hard to tell you what songs to listen to, so many fabulous ones. Just grab an album and listen, you won't be disappointed.
Disturbed are awesome. Saw them live last year and when David Draiman started singing this, many people cried. I did too. His voice is beautiful. All their songs are 🔥🔥🔥. Good reaction
David Draiman...One of the the most powerful and beautiful male voices out there imho. He has incredible range and control. He even puts vibrato on his vocal fry which is amazing!. Loved your reaction Chris.
I'm not a huge metal fan I like to HEAR the words, disturbed is metal but can hear words and the ones I love are ones where they do emotional punch to gut, "the light" is what I would call toned metal but watch with video as the videos work with lyrics fab too, but down with sickness is apparently one "most" know of disturbed , I somehow went from this cover to rest , purely as this cover was "holy "f@ckballs :O " to me like I pretty much cry every time I hear it , i actually never heard original so i did go listen and was like errrr lyrics, music, voices just don't work together, this one, oh you get the meaning ! but I have a random taste in music and many of my favs are obscure purely as the meaning resonated,
While I have watched literally hundreds of reactions to this song, by people with every degree of music education and/or interest, I must say YOU hit the nail on the head here. Your comparison of S&G's "pleading" delivery versus the "admonition" that this version emotes is spot on. I have literally ached for the proper verbiage to make that point in so many of my comments. While my attempts were adequate and appropriate, your choice of vocabulary said exactly what my soul had wanted to say all these YEARS since this piece was released. David Draiman is a trained voice with a history as a Jewish cantor. His instrument has as much skill and variety as any hailed operatic voice out there. Disturbed is actually known as a metal band, but they have many softer songs that highlight David's emotive acumen in a similar, though not quite as epic, style as this one. Most recently, they have released a ballad featuring the historical vocal prowess of Ann Wilson of Heart. While their popularity has its base from hard hitting metal songs that have become classics in their own right, Disturbed has surely shown their skill through the diversity apparent in their singles catalog alone. Despite their name, they are able to speak to positive emotion through their songs, too. One of my favorites of their originals delivers the power felt by a performer as he stands on stage and witnesses the support of "10,000 Fists in the Air". That is a feeling I have imagined on many occasions as one of those fists. Do yourself an open minded favor and check out some of their originals. Maybe read their lyrics to see where all they are coming from. There is no shortage of talent delivered by Dramain and his band brothers who are DISTURBED.
@@courageousMedia Most people start with Down With the Sickness, but I think Stricken is a better one to begin with personally. They have some other brilliant covers too - Land of Confusion is a good one.
@@courageousMedia -- I think Down with the Sickness might be a bit much to start with. Maybe try Indestructible. It's still heavy cuz ya know ... metal band and all that, but a bit less screaming in that one vs Down with the Sickness.
Love the analysis and commentary, but way too many interruptions to the point where you lost the entire progression of the song. Interruption to comment on his piercings? Really?? While I understand breaks because of copyright, yours were incessant and unnecessary. Maybe next time.
It has been observed that the S&G classic was a warning, and Disturbed's (50-years later) version is anger that the warning was not heeded. "The Light" would be a good next step for you in the Disturbed rabbit hole.
Believe it or not, the live version on Conan is even better. David Draiman is one of a select few that can sound as good, if not better, live. IMO, he and Phil Collins are the best live...
After all this time you are the only one commentator that I've heard say what you said and you are so right boy if you was here I'd give you a hug and a kiss God bless you cuz you understand music like me God bless you good job cuz you know what's up they don't do nothing anymore so that's what he's trying to make his voice do penetrate he penetrates music in my ears and in my body when I hear him I get goosebumps every time if I listened 20 times 100 times so people should start listening
They don't communicate they don't do anything he's trying to tell people so much the way he does it the way he looks there's a reason why because the way he is he's trying to express what the world is coming to I've been going and talking about him for the past 2 weeks he is the best sermon and Garfunkel I remember them as I was a kid but this guy will never ever ever don't want comparing him😊 nobody's paying attention to what he's saying he is the best I've heard yet he's
You got it totally from 'Silence like a cancer grows'. Excellent reaction. I am also of an age when I remember S&G's original coming out (my teenage years were the 1960s), and Disturb's version is probably the greatest cover of ANY song. Well done again for a great reaction!
I watched many people watch this video for years I’m 66 n I remember the original n disturb did it fabulously n u hit the nail on the head explaining it great job
Very different from the normal Disturbed heavy metal, but so impactful and epic. Hold on to Memories and The Light have equally amazing messages and a more gentle approach than some of their work. Also the cover of Genesis Land Of Confusion is amazing
hello from over the pond (Scotland) if i had 1 recommendation it would be the live version of this song live on Conan. David (singer) was ill cold or flu I'm not 100% sure or an original song from them "the light"
Enjoyed the reaction, Disturbed is a hard rock band, mostly heavy songs, they do have a few softer songs, their current release is a collaboration with Ann Wilson of Heart and it's outstanding, it's called Don't Tell me, their cover of Stings If I ever lose my faith in you, is excellent as well, those are a couple go check out.
The person who had the second posting was spot on. It was like a dog or cat was pulling your wang beater to the pause button and all you kept talking about was his voice. What did his voice sound like? Can you go back and sing it to your listeners since you seem to know all about it.
Exactly. I’m old enough to remember when the original song came out. My cousins were a bit older so I got introduced to a lot of music I otherwise would have missed.
These lyrics---particularly against the backdrop of the arrangement and the vocal delivery---are the words of lament and anger of an Old Testament prophet, admonishing his people that they have spurned relatedness to God and to each other, instead giving their devotion to their own 20th/21st Century neon god. This is an Old Testament message set to 21st Century music.
I didn't see anyone let you off the hook on the chin rings - if you see David in interviews, there are no piercings - I am pretty sure they are just magnetic. This interpretation of the song is an admonition, which is relevant, I think, to something else you said... Maybe god's plan is for us to make this world a place worthy of god to share it with us. Should we choose to take it upon ourselves to be stewards of this world, and to make it a place worthy for god to share with us... Well, if there isn't actually a god, then we just did that for ourselves - not the worst possible outcome, really.
This is his reaction to the video, not yours. If he wants to pause the video and give his opinion at that particular moment then he can do that. Anyway... He did rewind and play the section from the start again, so... 🤷♀️
I'm not sure how many reactions this guy has done but it often takes reactors a while to figure out the cadence of this without get copyright strikes. Another words "Lighten up Francis!"
Ummm no one if you are going to share your “ critique” ect likes you breaking in on the whole version whatever Disrespect!! For one,… listen first and then speak Really,.., if you want likes and followers….. seriously my “critique” and opinion. Good luck

Powerful, challenging, and full of rage. Mr Draiman seems to look right into your soul. A masterpiece.
I agree - haunting song
The original was meant to be heard. This version is meant to be felt.

When you paused this after only a minute into the song, all I could say was Buckle up Buttercup, he's only getting started!
Disturbed are awesome. Saw them live last year and when David Draiman started singing this, many people cried. I did too. His voice is beautiful. All their songs are 🔥🔥🔥.

Thank You!
You need to watch the version he did on Conan... it will blow you away. Paul Simon sent Draiman an email, and said to him, that this song is his now.
Love your reaction! The light , needs to be your next one. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
Just one word: GOOSEBUMBS
Great reaction. I love this cover of the song. Best ever. 😊❤

The first time I listened to this song.. I was speechless.. Had tears in my eyes. He is absolutely phenominal!
A canção é fantástica e na voz de David Draiman é algo indescritivel....para mim é uma oração! Ouço todos os dias.❤
Best cover of ANY song EVER!
The original song was a warning. This song is the warning not heeded.
I agree with you-he’s getting the point across-to me like God saying wake up or the world will be destroyed!!!!!!!!!!!
Hold on to memory and the Light are both excellent
The original song was released in 1964.
This is a great version.
OOOWAAAA AAAAA , (down with the sickness) but try "the light" from him too
he's cantor trained but known for metal

Which ones?

Check out "A Reason to Fight" , "Hold on to Memories", "The Light" and their latest with Ann Wilson, "Don't Tell Me"
Thak you for your reaction. I so loved all your comments. Thank you
His expressions have a lot to do with his airflow, tone, rasp, etc....butvyeah, it's very fitting
this is also available live on Conan Show he had the flu when preforming it
Please check out a reason to fight, it’s saved many many lives
David is trained in opera and classical music. Definitely check out The Light and Land Of Confusion.
No. No he is not. He had trained to be a Cantor at his Synagogue.

Mr Draiman was trained as a Jewish Cantor in his Synagogue. He said he always sang. Even on the School Buss. His voice is a gift..
Listen to disturbed " get down with the sickness"
ES LO MÁS GRANDE QUE SE PUEDE OÍR, SENTIR.
you got it in one this is the how dare you version

That was an excellent performance on Conan!
He is a Cantor, vocally trained 😊
Well, he trained to be one, but never followed through officially becoming one.

Thank you!!
I loved your reaction. ❤.You got it right!
Paul Simon Loved this Version so Much that He put it on his playlist! 😊 ✌ Check out the Live Version on the Conan O'Brien Show on 3/28/2016.
Simon & Garfunkel's original was a warning. Disturbed's version, some 60 yrs later, is a wakeup call.

Great band!
Man, you really love YOUR voice.
hmmm...
Perfect review
Thanks!
The piercings are magnetic he was raised in a religious home. So when he goes home he removes them. He was choir trained in a church imagin that.
LOL -- then why does he have 2 holes in his lower lip? Those were real. And he trained to be a Cantor for his Synagogue. HUGE difference.
Check again, he has No holes David is now in Israel he really hates what is going on
Disturbed is a heave metallband
Let’s hear/see the video the comment
Highly recomend checking everything Tommy Johnson and Sabaton.
Take the song in!
Way too much interpretation which loses the beauty of David's voice. This was first played to late night media in 2016 the band are brilliant

Pentatonix do an amazing version of this song just stunning.

@@rwhemme I simply didn't see the piercings in several interviews I watched. Not a big deal, thanks.
want to say after the song has finished then your opinion can be shared xx
they are nu metal and u gotta get don ith the sickness thier biggest hit besides this
But make sure to listen to the whole song, not the radio version where the whole explanation is cut off. Maddening.
And here I sit, watching you, on my "Neon god". 🙄
Do the acapella version by pentatonix. It gives us hope.
Live version on Conan is a much better showing.
Geez. Are you listening….
Nope hasn’t a clue
You need #Pause T-Shirt!
LOL
You need some headphones Champ. 😎🎧

Did you ever consider that by stopping the song every few seconds, that you ruined OUR experience?
If you chose for this to be your first experience with the song then that was silly, otherwise, you'll be fine
