Hankook & Giti vs Michelin & Bridgestone Tires

  • A few years ago when money wasn't really an object I would automatically put Michelin tires on my car. Well, my financial position has changed and now I need to look at cheaper alternatives, but I don't want to compromise comfort, handling or - most importantly - safety.
In the last year I have had very good experiences with Hankook and Giti tires. This video will explain more.

Hi Phil, I think Hankooks and Giti tires are great tires. Definitely Michelins and Bridgestones are great tires too, but unless you’re going to be using them in the track and/or driving like a maniac in the city, these Hankook’s and Giti’s are great.

Thanks for your comment! I just put another set of Hankooks on my wife's car. The previous ones still had some life in them after three years and 30k kms, but just to be on the safe side. My Giti HT152s are still doing a great job and still have a lot of tread.
I agree entirely. If you're racing and looking to cut a few seconds off lap times, then spend a fortune. Otherwise, I don't honestly feel it's worth it for normal driving. The Gitis and Hankooks have been excellent in every respect. I certainly wouldn't compromise my own or my family's safety if I thought they were inferior. They're not, they're quality tires, and once again I bought the latest set of Hankooks for significantly less than a set of Michelins. Still very pleased with both brands!

I wanna buy tyres for my crossover and have three options:
      Nexen nfera Supreme(N5000 Platinum) ($175),
      Nankang SP-9 Cross-Sport ($115), and
      Giti Sport S2 Suv ($125).
I can’t decide which one should I go with, as comfort and smooth driving is the number one priority for me.

Thank you! I should reiterate that I'm not saying Michelin and Bridgestone are bad, but that there are other brands out there that are equally good for a lot less money. The Hankooks on my wife's car and the Gitis on mine are still doing great. We just have family, fairly low performance cars. The difference 'may' be greater with high performance tires as Michelin and Bridgestone have more experience in motorsport.

    Hi Phil
Thank you for the review. I am familiar with Hankook as it's a big global brand and standard fitment on VW's overseas and have used the Ventus V12 on a VW before.
Giti I am unfamiliar with until moving to the ASEAN as it is a Singapore headquartered company they have been focusing on our region.
Also great to see an owners review in English out here in the ASEAN region.
I am looking at Hankook KH125 or Giti Synergy H2 as alternative replacement for my OE Conti's
    Thanks again.

Thanks for your comment! I did the review a while ago and both sets of tires are still running well with plenty of tread left. I've done one rotation on each car, front to rear.
There was a time when I thought nothing of throwing on a new set of Michelin's or Bridgestone's. Marriage, kids, a falling exchange rate and rising inflation changed all that. I looked elsewhere and found alternatives for half the price.
And they are great tires, equal to or better than M or B. If you drive a high performance car I don't know if G or H can compete with Michelin Cup tires, but the Gitis and Hankooks are great for the average family runaround. I've been very pleased and will definitely buy them again.

I was very pleased with the first set of Hankooks on my wife's car and have just replaced them after 20k+ kms with another set of Hankooks. Once again, they were half the price of Michelins and Bridgestones. I expect you have a sportier version for your BMW, but even the lower priced tires are very good.

Hi Clive, it always worries me a little when someone makes a decision based on one of my videos just in case it doesn't work out for them. As I said in the video, which is based on my own personal experience, putting Hankook tires on my wife's car and Giti tires on my car has worked out very well for me. Both makes of tire perform very well and cost half (or less than half) than the equivalent Michelin tires in Thailand. I hope it works out for you too. As I said in the video, some big car manufacturers are fitting Hankook tires as original equipment. Porsche put Hankook tires on its Cayenne and Macan SUVs. Porsche has it's own 'n' rating system for tires and the company is extremely fastidious, so that should tell you quite a lot about the brand. Thanks for your comment!

Sorry, but I don't know the answers. With technology now, I don't think there is such thing as a bad tire. The ones you've listed are performance tires. My experience with more modest tires from Giti and Hankook has been very positive.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for your comment! I've now been running on the HT 152 tyres for six months and I continue to be very impressed with them. As you say, wet and dry grip is excellent especially in the wet. Southern Thailand has just had its wettest rainy season for 10 years and I've had to drive in torrential rain at times. The tyres give me a lot of confidence. They're quite and give a comfortable ride. Another thing that really impresses me is the fuel economy, but it's up and down. At first my fuel economy with the Giti tyres was amazing - completely off the scale. After a while it settled down and was about the same as my previous Michelin HP Latitudes. Just recently I had some idle problems and replaced my idle air control valve. Since doing that the fuel economy has improved again and now it is consistently better than the Michelins. Considering that these tyres are half the price of equivalent Michelin or Bridgestones, I think they are great value!

Interesting that these are made by Giti, but called GT. I wasn't sure about the pronunciation at first, but a Giti rep told me it is pronounced GT. These look like very nice tyres. My Giti HT152's are still doing great. I got them rotated recently, but still lots of tread and fantastic grip, especially in the wet. Quiet, good comfort, and great handling. I've been very impressed and considering how much cheaper they are than Michelin or Bridgestone they are great value for money. Thanks for your feedback!

@@Gods_Child001 Good luck with your business venture! The attitude of tyre stores in Thailand where I live seems to be that Michelin and Bridgestone are best and everything else is second rate. Michelin and Bridegestone are indeed good, but they're expensive. On regular cars I have found Giti and Hankook to be equally as good, and a lot cheaper. This may not apply to high performance types- I don't know - but I'm not interested in high performance tyres. Every aspect of the Giti HT152's has been as good, or better, than the Michelins and Bridgestones that I had previously, and they are a lot cheaper.

Sad, aren't we?! I've just updated mine, actually, and the increasing cost of fuel is frightening. I'm paying almost 37 Baht per litre now, whereas just over a year ago I was paying less than 22 Baht. As the Russia/Ukraine conflict escalates I suspect that prices will increases further.
The good news is that after a few fixes to my car I can see that my fuel economy has improved markedly - helped, of course, by the Giti tyres! And it's only us sad spreadsheet users that have access to this information! So, maybe we aren't that sad after all!

@@PhilUKNet I just installed GitiSport S1 on Wednesday. Some people have reported 5% improvement in fuel economy. My first impression of the S1 is light, comfortable, quiet. Previously Goodyear F1A5 and earlier Yokohama RV-02

@@KeefeLoke I had Goodyear F1's on my Porsche 944 S2 when I lived in the UK. Good tyres and they had a really attractive tread pattern. When I first got the Giti HT152 tyres I was getting incredible mileage, but there must have been a problem with my calculations. Now that things have settled down the average fuel consumption is slightly better than my previous Michelin HP Latitudes and a lot better than the Bridgestone Ecopia 850's.
The S1's you have are the top of the range. My experience with Giti, and also with putting Hankook tyres on my wife's car, has completely changed my outlook. I'm not saying that Michelin and Bridgestone tyres are bad, far from it, but they are very expensive. With the category of tyre that I use (not ultra high performance), there are equally good tyres from companies such as Giti and Hankook that are a lot less expensive. My experience with Giti has been very positive and I'm very happy to recommend the brand.
PS Since using the Giti tyres I haven't had a single puncture. This may be pure coincidence but with the previous Michelin and Bridgestones I was always picking up screws and needing to get punctures repaired. Probably a coincidence.

I have just binned 4 x Giti tyres from my VW that was brand new for Michelins. The Giti tyres were horrible. Fitting budget tyres to a mid-premium brand vehicle is pure penny pinching, especially when they used to fit Continentals from factory.
