Sami is the indigenous population of Sameland, an undefined area in northern Norway, Sweden and Finland and on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The number of Sami is estimated to be between 80,000 and 100,000. Of these, 50,000-65,000 live in Norway, 20,000-40,000 in Sweden, about 8,000 in Finland and about 2,000 in Russia. Reindeer husbandry is to own and control domestic or semi-wild reindeer and to use them for their livelihoods, for example, by utilizing milk, meat and skins :) Their handicraft is awesome :)Jojk, Sami for singing, is an ancient Sami song, among the oldest in Europe. The term jojka originally comes from the Sami word juoigat. A jojk must not contain any words or sentences, joke melodies sometimes contain only sounds and convey messages and emotions with the help of these :)

The clothes he is wearing is called gákti or kolt in Swedish. The gákti is a traditional sámi costume and varies very much depending on where you're from, who your family is, if you're a man or woman, old or a child. If you are single or not, married, devorced, or if you have a partner, if you're a teen. If you're confirmed or not and it can even tell if you are rich or not. It's very personal and sacred clothing. And beautiful as anything. It's very hard work as it's personally customized.

    • @sugarinmywounds
      @sugarinmywounds 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ReactToTheWorld Actually, the story in Frozen 2 about the dam and conflict between Arendell and the Northuldra-people is inspired by the story of the Sámi village Máze/Masi in the municipality of Kautokeino in Northern Norway.
"During the late 1960s to the early 1980s, the Norwegian government considered building a dam on the local river for the proposed Alta Hydroelectric Power Station which would have flooded the village. This was called the Alta controversy and it had a big impact on the nation's politics at that time." (from en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masi,_Norway)
The hydroelectric power plant was eventually built, but luckily, thanks to the many protests, the village of Máze was decided to be protected in 1973. And it still stands today.
I have a request/recommendation for you guys, if you want to react to more joik.
There were made songs and joiks about the protest, and one of the strongest ones is the joik Máze by Mari Boine.
The younger artist Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen joiked her own versjon of it on the tv-show Stjernekamp in 2018. And I think it's the most powerful thing I have ever heard. You should definitely check it out: th-cam.com/video/odpREEp-uOo/w-d-xo.html

    • @sugarinmywounds
      @sugarinmywounds 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ReactToTheWorld Another song/joik about the subject actually reached the whole way to Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, Sámiid Ædnan. That has more song than joik, but it is also amazing. I bet everyone between 20 and 80 in Norway would recognize the joik if they heard if. Maybe even younger than 20.
Sámiid Ædnan means Sámi Soil, and one of the most important lyrics is "Joik har større kraft enn krutt" (Joik has more power than gun powder).

Our dear Jon - Henrik who won this competition, has told us that just before this performance he thought about taking his life! He thought he would not win he just wanted to jojking for the last time this jojk.. That was the turn and he became the most popular artist in Sweden with this. He then wrote the jojke "free" which I strongly recommend you to do a reaction video with. He has since performed in the melody festival twice. He belongs to the "indigenous people" here in Sweden. Who live close to nature in a similar way to the Indians in "horns". Which is similar to the American Indians. Like the Indians' music, the Sami jojke has no words when sung, but is a song from the heart and soul. This jojke should not really be interrupted for it to grab hold of one. It is meant to listen for a distance and then it gets a much wider range and goes all the way in, I recomendate for the big feeling. This jojk has a text that I can come back with, if not anyone has written it here. It was the extension of his best friend who died. The most vulnerable group in Sweden for suicide is the Sami population. Who are often ostracized as a group and bullied in the smaller communities in the North where they live, above all. The cold part off Sweden, with snow at all year... The clothes he wears are Sami folk costume. Nothing worn by others in Sweden. The cap, on the other hand, can come across and they joke about it in the program when Carolina Gynning sitting in the jury says about it: Oh what a fine! The others laugh and say that Carolina actually has one to. When you know who Carolina is as a person, you understand it more. I'm so glad you made a video with this particular bombshell video with Jon - Henrik! I became completely enthralled and stuck, there was no one else who would win in my world talent! So amazing! Goes straight into the soul! I went straight to Spotyfy and downloaded his music. From not being "somebody" to Sweden's most beloved artist! 🥰

I wonder when Europeans will accept their Sammi blood (roots) After all we all come from somewhere, they are the first people of Europe they been there before any major monarchy and European empire. I think you have to have watched a lot of Eurovision before one watches that though, because it´s so much reference humour and in-jokes, that you won´t get if you´re not familiar with Eurovision. It´s super funny if you know Eurovision, it´s made for people who are familiar with Eurovision, to recognize all the funny stuff.
I think Måns and Petra's song "What is Eurovision?" is more suited for Americans with no prior knowledge of Eurovision.

An easy wikipedia search " joik or yoik is a traditional form of song in Sámi music performed by the Sámi people of Sapmi in Northern Europe. Originally, joik referred to only one of several Sami singing styles, but in English the word is often used to refer to all types of traditional Sami singing. As an art form, each joik is meant to reflect or evoke a person, animal, or place." Jon Henrik Fjällgren is the singer and today he is very popular. He sings in Swesih too. There are both chanting and also lyrics in samii/sapmii in his song.. Im in part sapmii, nordic, Celtic and latino. Samii or sapmii as we call it, is a native aborigial ethnicity spread out on their own territory across norwegian, swedish, finnish, and russian broders.. Mostly up north in each country, but in Sweden and Norway there are sapmii people even more southern areas.. These people are comparable to native americans in USA and Canada, and are considered tiny minorities
I have never heard about sapmii people in Denmark though, allthough it is a nordic country.. My ä dad was danish.
Jon Henriks outfit is a traditional sapmii outfit, and not common in or nearby cities when speaking of large cities in especially the more southern parts of Sweden, so the jury might or might not have seen pictures of such outfits.

Do you go with me still, my dear friend,
Although I no longer see you?
Are you still here on earth,
Just as you remain in my heart?
    I lie there and ponder,
Its a deafly soundless around me.
The tears break through and falls,
    In the memories of you.
An angel that was left behind,
    Have now got its wings.
Where do you fly now, my angel?
    Where do you fly now?
Are you flying through the pearly gates, tell me?
    Or to the worlds end?
    Are you flying beside me?
    Or am I alone now?
Where ever you are my friend.
Where ever the path takes you.
    Promise me you'll wait there,
    Until we meet again.
    I hope you're happy now.
    As i was with you,
    The pain you have suffered,
    i hope its now gone.
    Soar free, my dear friend.
    You're free now.
    And until we meet again,
    Farewell, my angel.

He is also singing in South Sámi language, I think he sings "Manne måjhtan datnem, mov voelpe" (I speak Ume-Sámi so this might be a bit faulty) which translates to "I remember you, my friend" or "I'm reminded of you, my friend". And Sweden actually colonialized the Sámi people with lots of losses of our own culture, traditions, religion and languages. There is still much racism and oppression from the state/swedes towards the Sámi. Which makes this song even stronger and Jon-Henrik even braver! ♥
