When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. Carpenter's jaw and right arm were shattered, and he lost his right eye and most of his teeth; he has undergone dozens of surgeries. He was 20 when he jumped on the grenade 24 when was awarded the Medal of Honor & is 32 now.

30 or so give or take a few broken bones in just one of his arms if I remember correctly, collapsed lung, brain rattled, just to add on from the injuries you already listed, that I can remember
Not to mention, his carotid artery was punctured, shrapnel in both legs, a collapsed lung and flatlined 3 times. In the sense of his injuries, I know how he feels. In 2003 while serving in Iraq I was in the front passenger seat of a Humvee that had been struck by a daisy-chained IED (improvised explosive device) that was buried near a bridge just outside Al Fallujah, Iraq. The blast flipped my Humvee and threw me approximately 30-40 away onto the side of the road. The resulting explosion, blast wave and ejection from the vehicle caused me to receive a shattered left leg and ankle in 7 places, shrapnel wound in my left arm and elbow, all ribs on left side broken, collapsed left lung, 2 ruptured eardrums, detached retina in left eye, a severe concussion, a broken jaw and a compressed spine and damage to L4, L5, and L5S1. I had 8 surgeries over 4 years. 2 rods and 6 screws in my leg. A screw to hold together my shattered 5th rib and a mesh cage and screws to stabilize my lower spine. I am nowhere near the man Kyle Carpenter was but I do know the pain of injuries like the ones faced.

Im retired Army and of course make fun of the Marines but I have tremendous respect for all Marines. My Uncle by marriage was enlisted at Inchon, officer in vietnam, my twin served 85-92 with a stint in Liberia in 90
I am having a hard time trying to find the words to describe how this made me feel. I am humbled to know that these kind of men exist and am proud that he is alive and thriving. A hero is someone who deserves our respect because they earned it. Every country has heroes like this and every country should be thankful for producing these kinds of men and women ! I am glad Jame s and Millie that you brought this story to my attention.

It's a shame that we have so many kids in college who are the same age as him at that time who are berating this country and not understanding the amount of freedom they have because of people like him.

@@rlkenna4374 a combat veteran gave them that idea though as a way to bring attention to an issues while still being respectful to an extent. I love this country which is why I refuse to ignore its problems for the sake of self agrandizing a specific group that generally agrees with me. The problems go a lot deeper than a protest at a football game. At least try to understand and maybe we can all come to a rational compromise and start fixing shit around here. If not say hello to Rome 2.0 as we all bring it about while being blissfully ignorant to the idea we are part of the problem and blaming everyone else.

I took care of him, there were a lot of people involved in his recovery, I left Iraq in 2008 as a combat medic, shortly after coming back I volunteered for an assignment working at Walter Reed working with the wounded coming home, awesome job to have.
My lifelong best friend who is more like a brother to me is alive and able to walk today because of the heroes like you at Walter Reed.

I lost no family in Viet Nam but 4 of my High School friend came back in boxes. I visit them as often as I can. One was awarded the MOH posthumously. The other three I honor just as much for their service. I was in the Navy at the time and mostly out to sea. I can't imagine losing a relative. A Hand Salute for your Brother!

Cowardice is also remembered. 1938, 1948, 1968. Not helping European countries but helping Asian countries instead.

But in the 60's we helped Korea and Vietnam... because Communism was spreading like a cancer throughout Asia. A family member of mine, now deceased, won the Medal of Honor for his heroic service in Korea when he carried every single one his detail that had been hit back to safety covering miles and miles for each of the other men. I've had a lot of vets in my family and the one thing that always strikes me is you know they're only telling you the parts they like to remember, the in between moments when everything is calm, and it gives a real sense of freedom comes at the highest cost but they were willing to pay that for the rest of us which makes them heroes.

He should have protected him by not going to a foreign country with weapons.

Thank you for your reaction to this. For some reason, I have not seen this one. While it amazes me people do such selfless things, it does not surprise me. Kyle's courage and selflessness does not go unnoticed on me now that I have been told. I also like Kyle's message of don't take freedom and democracy for granted...remember how it was obtained and what it takes to keep it.
He went on a "selfless" special military operation, right?
If he hadn't jumped on that grenade both of them would have died most likely, instead, both survived. He was wearing body armor and that is probably why he survived. He is one amazing man.
I’m so lucky my dad has come home from every deployment safe and sound. However I know many people who aren’t so lucky and for them I pray everyday. The military messes people up even if ya ain’t hurt
Kyle is the youngest LIVING MoH Recipient. He was 21 when the relevent event occurred.
William (Willie) Johnston was actually the youngest recipient of the MoH ever to the best of my knowledge. He was a drummer in the American Civil War and was 13 when he was awarded the medal.
While this is factually correct let's be honest the Medal of Honor during the Civil War was a rather every day occurrence . At the time it was the only medal given. Willie got his because he didn't leave his drum on the battle field. "While the Medal of Honor is now the highest military decoration attainable by a member of the United States armed forces, during the Civil War, it was the only one. Thus, it was often awarded for reasons that would not now satisfy the stringent modern criteria." A total of 1,522 were given out during the Civil war, an additional 864 given and later revoked simply for reenlisting (the entire unite got them instead of the 311 entitled because it was offered as an inducement to reenlist. I'm a very distant cousin of recipient who got his medal at the Battle of Petersburg for a decent job but hardly one of gallantry. Willie's award was typical for the Civil War and when compared to the actions of the others in his unit his feat was well above the others in his unit. @@williamthomas7509 Considering the nature of the combat back then, a 13yr old merely showing up on the field of battle is profoundly courageous. But yeah they did spread them about pretty freely.
My best friend’s nephew, Brian, a medic in the Army, was killed in a roadside bomb in Afghanistan . We don’t thank these hero’s enough!

Air Force veteran, signed my contract on 28 May 1968 and separated on 4 August 1976 . I never got any award even close to this guy I am proud of him and all other Medal of Honor awardees and will be proud to salute any of them when I see them.

Just so you know, you watched the First Medal of Honor Winner ever Recorded. The first recipient of the Medal of Honor was Pvt. Jacob Parrott in 1863.
The Medal of Honor is awarded to servicemembers who sacrifice their life for their comrades. Informational purposes. Great piece!

Truly an American hero. What strikes me with Kyle's story first is how absolutely humble he is. He stated that the Medal of Honor to him reflects every person that served/serves our Armed Forces, past, present and future, those here and those who have gone home, not to exclude the MIAs/POWs (missing in action/prisoners of war) or the families of every Armed Services member. What a brave, selfless soul he is... just as his brothers and sisters that have served this country. God bless you all. God bless the U. S. A. I was just in the hospital for 2 months, and lost strength to walk while recovering in the hospital bed. I cannot imagine spending 3 years in such difficult recovery, with so many surgeries. He has went through hell on earth.
This is absolutely amazing. The truest definition of selfless service. No time to think at all. Just natural instinct to save someone ELSES life.
I have a tattoo on my spine that says “Ultimate Loyalty To Serve My Country”! Carpenter probably doesn’t have this tattoo but his actions & words undeniably proved he has Ultimate Loyalty For His Country too, as it means you’d gladly give your life for your country w/out hesitation! He’s the epitome of an AMERICAN HERO!!!

My family has 52 at Arlington, and one of this nation's first Marines (a relative) died fighting the British, at the battle of Cowpens, 1775 - buried where he fell. Another relative, Sr. SURVIVING officer, received "the button", for actions aboard the Arizona, 7 Dec 1941, retired admiral, late 1950's. Too much to tell.

I have a guilty pleasure watching some of your stuff. However, when I see you're doing a patriotic type of story, my eyes are glued to Millie. Such empathy in her face. I always shed a tear when I hear stories of my brothers and sisters in arms. I'm just a Desert Storm veteran. I am always reminded of the song lyrics. Most gave some, but some gave all. My biggest role model in terms of elected leaders in American history is the late Senator Max Cleland from Georgia. He was an army soldier in Vietnam and a grenade blew up ub his hand and he miraculously survived but he lost both legs and one arm and was in a wheelchair the rest of his life. He went on to be the youngest every appointed head of the Veterans Administration and then later Georgia Secretary of State and then US Senator from Georgia!

When any service member sees someone wearing that medal they come to attention and salute be they private or general.
Most of those awarded this medal do not consider themselves to be a hero.
Cause they are not heroes. Heroes don´t use guns on foreign soil.

Talk about a tear jerker!!!! Wow…. The bravery and courage of that young man is beyond words. His actions that day to save his friend's life, make up the very definition of unconditional love! There is no greater love than that one man lay down his own life for that of another.

What Kyle Carpenter did was the exact same thing that happened in Red Dawn one of the characters jumped on a grenade so another one could survive it's crazy how movies and real-life can correlate into something very very heroic!

Never forget that people like him still exist in our world. I strive to be as selfless as this man. A truly unachievable goal, but one worthy of the effort.
I follow him on SM and he lives his life exactly as he describes the medal, with honor, courage, respect and care. He gives back so much of himself also. So thankful and blessed to know that there have been and will be men and women who answer that call.

One of my favorite. I enlisted in the Marines right out of high school In boot camp, there was a drill og the pine cone was a grenade. When it was thrown we were to jump on it, symbolizing saving our buddies. There was always a dog pile. Don't be on the bottom of 50 or 60 privates. Ughhhh.

Brings a tear to my eye I'm a 2nd generation Marine I got to Parris Island 40 years to the day my father did. He was in high school and him and 2 of his friends dropped out to join. My father was the only one to come back . God bless the Marines and this brave man

In the Marines they are dedicated to each other they are there to protect their fellow marine. Their duty is to each other. to protect each other, even too Give their Life for their Fellow Marine. This is the Training and the Mind Set of all Marines.

You need to look up Audie Murphy the man who eceived the most medals ever. He was a true hero. His story is beyond amazing.
There are many different kind's of hero's in this world, I myself, many year's ago saved a little 2yr old girl from drowning & my family & friend's call me a hero for it, but I don't feel I did anything that day that any other human being wouldn't have done, had they been standing in my shoe's, but jumping in front of someone too take a bullet, or in this case, covering a grenade too save another's life, now that is "The REAL Deal" when it come's to being "A TRUE HERO"
Hell, that's the definition of HEROIC!
I am so happy, for both this young Man, & his loved one's, that he survived & now thrives 🙏

Please watch the Dakota Meyer medal of honor video. He did the unthinkable and it has helicopter pilots telling the story as they seen it from the air, other service people who was there and Dakota telling the story too. It's insane and so honorable. Dakota was raised in Columbia Kentucky my neighboring town. Hope you watch!

Good choice. There are so many stories out there like this one that you could fell a library wing with them. But it's only when someone decides to show one or read one that makes it real for so many.

He is truly an American hero. This story brings me to tears everytime I hear it. God says there is no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend.

As an ex military wife, this hit home. I was in tears. The worry and daily stress when your husband is gone and never knowing if he would make it home is like nothing else. God bless this man and a thank you to all that serve/have served.
