I am still quite concerned about those small lines that were capped off/removed previously when tidying the engine cooling system. Please re-visit all vacuum breaker lines & vents on the cooling water system to guarantee you are not getting ‘back flooding’ or residual cooling water in the lines when the engine is hot & shut down, condensing hot liquid can easily draw in cold if No vacuum break or vent.
Guy’s, don’t lose sight of why you’re out there, with so many people trying to tell you what they want you to do. It’s your adventure, we’re just here to watch you enjoy it which goes back to why I’m here. I’m here because I really enjoy your adventures, but I’m really enjoying watching you grow in skill & knowledge. Compared to the early beginnings, you’re both like Salty Sailors now, it’s funny now but, either of you can carry on a conversation with any kind of mechanic now and probably couldn’t imagine that at the beginnings! I’m glad you’re going to “slow down “ and smell the Rose’s….. *That engine sound reminded me of the “African Queen”, in the Movie of the same name! LOL! I think it’s on Utube, if you haven’t seen it yet.
If you have followed Delos and Calico Skys, they used Puerto Peñasco to do the work on their boats before the crossing. Inexpensive and a work force geared to the Blue Water community.
I have to confess, when your helpers arrived before you did the canal, you messed around taking off pipes and things from the engine, and I was crying out to you, “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”. I feel that you are now paying the price. Love you guys xxx
Congrats on a well thought out plan. I love it. Taking your time and getting properly outfitted is the way to go. You must feel a sense of releif almost that you've made this decision. Its no longer banging around in your heads😂. Be well guys!
French Polynesia and New Zealand are my two favorite places in the World, and they are both sailing paradise. I was lucky to spend 4 years in New Zealand, and it is truly spectacular. Your plans are still flexible, but don't miss the Cook Islands, particularly Aitutaki, the local equivalent of Bora Bora. I can't wait to follow your adventures in the Pacific.
you'll want an ICE outboard for south pacific. You can't ONLY have an electric outboard. OMG I can't believe you've made it this long without a watermaker. That would be pretty high on my list.
now that you can get a 15hp 4-stroke with EFI, that's the route I would go. the efficiency is excellent and no need to deal with oil. Dealing with 4-stroke carburetors and parts availability is why many people avoided 4-stroke but that is less and less the case@@MRMV483 I like the idea of electric outboards but not exclusively, just supplementary.
I so look forward to Monday’s because of you both. Glad you are slowing down to experience all you can. One, of many things I admire about you both is that clearly you are very smart about everything you do. My husband and I bought our first sailboat when I was in my early 30’s. After a couple years we changed to a 28’ cabin cruiser. We sold it and now live in England (from Indiana) and miss it. However, regardless if sailing or motor cruising, it’s a lot of work. But you guys are much younger and now being 68 years old, I love that you are sharing your experiences so I can live vicariously through you. Enjoy life!
Hey there! We're so glad to have you on board for our Monday adventures. Your stories sound amazing, and we're grateful to have you sharing in our experiences. Let's keep the good times rolling!
Wow Sailor, you are mature if you take your time and also go to other parts of the world. Don't rush your journey you are still young. Just enjoy and keep on sailing
Just word of advice from a mechanic. Anytime I feel as though there MIGHT be some water intrusion I always take out the spark plugs and turn the engine over. That will clear the cylinders of anything that may be in them. Also, if you attempt you start an engine multiple times, it is possible to put enough fuel in there to hydro it. Lessons aren’t free, but they do make us smarter and more prepared. You two are doing really well, keep it up!
at where you, and your boat are right now, sailing up the south American coast is a good move. Some countries along the way where you can get certain things done on the boat at good price. Get the boat ready on the way, learn more about the boat and up the trust. Then cross over the pacific from Baha California. I will enjoy following your progress. Fair Winds
I think your decision to hold off your Pacific crossing is the correct one, get your boat ship shape where you are now, don't wait for New Zealand it's too bloody expensive, you could save 1000s by getting things done in south America
Indeed, slow down is a important step as a sailor. I´ve seen loads of sailors just hussling and bussling round the globe, in a rush. Some have different goals in the end. If your going to sail the world for rest of your life. then its important to take your time. Not all have that goal.
Here is hoping you run into SV Bàsik on your way north. Cpt Teal and his wife are awesome. They are headed towards you at the moment. They’ve got a cat. Bummed about your engine. I do hope it gets sorted quickly. Stay safe!
Absolutely take your time!!! And don't beat yourselves up about not making the Pacificthis year. Its such a wise decision. Your instincts are spot on! Besides the boat not being as ready as it could be, the important thing is you both enjoy this incredible adventure - without stress. Cruising is challenging enough! You won't get to cruise up to Mexico again for probably several years. And it is beautiful. We spent 2 years in the Sea of Cortez diving and exploring such beautiful remote places and the local culture. Our first circumnavigation we left from Baja, and stopped in the Revillagigados Islands. You'll miss the Galapogos but like you said, you've gained 1000 miles!! And after a few weeks at sea, you will be so grateful you did!! Nothing prepares you for being underway for weeks, continually in motion, incredible wear and tear on your rig and you both... so take all the time you need! The Pacific will be there whenever you are ready!! Meanwhile have the time of your life!!! Sans Stress! I can't wait for you to discover the pristine, glass-smooth anchorages, incredible diving, people and community ❤
As I commented 3 weeks ago, I am still praying that you haven’t caused water ingress through the exhaust system by removing the parts you thought were redundant, perhaps causing the situation where when the exhaust outlet or another entry point is submerged due to waves or trim that water now comes into the engine and ultimately hydrolocks the engine. Waiting on tender hooks to find out what has happened. Keep safe. Best wishes from Wales. 🤞
Sounds like you have quite an adventure planned. The entire Pacific is notoriously rolly. You might want to investigate flipper stoppers for the roll and an anchor riding sail for the stern to control swing if needed.
Hey Guys! Can't help with the engine! Sorry. But sure did enjoy Becka's question to Zach early in the episode "What's in the bag?" and she points her finger at it. He despondently says "the drone". She then points her finger at Zach, and gives him a thumbs down! That was good cinematography
I think heading north to Mexico is a good idea. The Sea of Cortez offers some great cruising and diving. You can anchor alone or join other boats - there are so many anchorages! Plus you can easily get boat work or marine products in San Carlos or La Paz. I spent six months there before heading to French Polynesia and certainly enjoyed it.
I have been watching a number of channel spend time in Mexico and Costa rica and you will have the most fantastic time there. Personally I would have spent more time in Panama on the other side if I was there but people do things for a number of reasons. No need to do a pacific crossing when you don't need to at this point in time.
Been following your adventures for some time now. Thanks for sharing. You both are way more mature and wise than your ages would suggest. Take your time, don’t take chances, enjoy the world and each other. Perhaps you’ll run into salt&tar somewhere up in Mexico. 😊
That knocking sound, sounds like my old diesel Ford 445 tractor when it is cold, once it warms up the knocking goes away. I hope it is not a crank shaft bearing getting sloppy. Good luck! Oh, by the way, i would visit California....😂😂😂
If you got knocked over by that water it could have got past the air lock .. Hydraulic locks from water or excess fuel are bad its best to see if you can turn it over by hand first. Then if theres resistance .. time to bleed the pipes and remove injectors ... and try it again by hand or on the starter... Liquids dont compress as your mate said but metal will break and bend...
I am please to here that you two are slowing down. Before you know we will all be watching you pull back into the UK. Enjoying your videos and the adventure.
Bay of Banderas (Puerto Vallarta) is a great hurricane hole. The hurricanes come up from the south and bounce off the huge southern tip, Cabo Corrientes. Best to be in a Marina by late June when hurricane season starts. Beastly hot in Aug and September. To get out of the hurricane one you have to go all the way up the sea of Cortez(Baja California). Beautiful cruising grounds. A lot of people go up to Puerto Penasco - you can nip across the border to the US easily for boat parts and supplies. Good luck!
Motor sounds okay on youtube. Not sure what it sounds like there or what it sounded like before. Make sure the raw water is going through. What would be concerning would be an uneven idle or metallic clunking noises. As others have noted with the big wave you could have had some water come through the antisiphon loop/valve. If thats the case it would be fine now. There was no strained attempt to turn it over in the video and 8f you got enough water 8n there to break something that would be part of the experience.
When you were talking about changing your plans, I thought you were going to say that you wanted to sail to Africa or something, when you have only just come through the canal. At the end of the day you're just having a short pause and hanging around the Americas a bit longer. You asked about what people like to see in the videos, I like to a see people having an adventure.
Sounds like a smart plan. If you have any upholstery, leather or fabric work you need done, Mexico is the place. Good work for half the price of anywhere else in the world. For the cockpit, the US is the place to be. More choices and quality of materials.
Thank you for sharing these insights! It's always good to know where to find quality work at a great price, we will be doing a load of work in Mexico 😊
You two and your cliff hangers!! I'm not even there, it's not my boat and I still get knots in my stomach. I'm glad to hear you are going to slow down some. You will lose close contact with the friends you have made, but with StarLink the world is not as big as it once was. There are so many lovely sailing people yet to meet. Congrats on the bean bags and stack packs. Love you. Stay safe. ❤🙏
I’m hoping the motor is just the intake off or a weak injector ! Central America and Mexico are awaiting. There’s plenty of time to do the pacific islands later. I’d check the wire hit by the drone very carefully ! It’s amazing the damage those little plastic blades can do. I believe it was Spirit Animal that hit their back stay with a drone and actually cut some of the wires. They had to replace the stay. A huge horror of sailing horrors is demasted in the middle of the Pacific Ocean !
The tides in Derby and Broome in Australia are huge as well! Broome is expecting a 5.7 m tide on Saturday and 8.3m tide change on Thursday 28/3. Wild stuff!!
Obviously I haven’t personally diagnosed your cooling/engine problems but after 50 years working on Diesel engines, I would be looking at the heat exchangers, there usually cast iron and rust quickly in a marine/salt water environment. You guys are probably months ahead of your videos but avoid running and possibly ruining your engine until the problem is resolved! Love your videos xx
As it's a diesel could it be build up or fouling of glow-plugs, or a fuel issue? I remember reading that can cause misfires and a chugging engine... But I'm not familiar with marine engines.
Possibly water into the engine through the exhaust while sitting in a rough anchorage. Possible bent connecting rod from hydraulic-ing the engine when turning it over on the starter. That’s why it was turning over slowly. Let hope I’m wrong.
I'm glad to hear you're sticking around awhile longer, maybe you won't make it very up the coast of Mexico, but... You should definitely check out San Diego and Los Angeles while you're here. Amazing part of the world, despite the hate California has been getting lately
Keep at it 👍👍 your videos cheer me up after a mad week moving house and building furniture (ps I made a storage bed three times. . .😂) the air was blue many times! You guys then posted and I chilled out in seconds😎
Bon voyage, wherever you venture and for however long! Really enjoy following your story and am more than a tad envious. 1) Roly-poly anchorages: believe you purchased a stack of buckets recently, have you considered sacrificing a couple to suspend one each side on poles to act as dampers? Obviously, need to cut a hole in the base of each. 2) Stack-pack. Probably well worth utilising for rainwater catchment, good for washing etc if not also for drinking after a good flush-through. Well marked extra canisters at the ready!
There is an electronics store downtown by hotel riu that has a few models of drones. You can order from marine warehouse and have it delivered on the pacific side. Some cruisers give up and fly to Florida and get what they need and fly back. Boquete is a nice place to spend a few da6s in Panama. There are nice hikes. Going south and getting work done is common before crossing. Not sure that's a th8ng going north.
Totally understand the change of plans. One thing I’ve noticed on the other channels is the huge benefit/ safety factor of Doppler radar picking up squalls, especially at night, the zones you will be passing through around the equator will be some of the most changeable. See sailing with Thomas he explains the weather brilliantly. Do you have weather radar? Sailing Chuffed on TH-cam is around the sea of Cortez, some lovely places. X J
You two are great and your content/ adventures are obviously enjoyed by many people. They and I will enjoy your episodes whatever you do and if you want to slow down then do it, they always say go with your gut feeling. As a 50+yr old Brit sitting in his lounge in the UK but only owning a laser dinghy on a lake😂😂, it is quite envious watching you living the dream. The episode where the guy told you, you could have the boat, after thinking someone else was buying it was emotional and it is a great design. I also watch a you tube channel Sailing Supernova and they are doing Mexico towards Panama and had amazing experiences in a place called something like 'Mag Bay' where there were loads of Whales and one surfaced right beside their dinghy, best Whale footage I have ever seen ,so look forward to your episode from there!
Hope all is going to be Okay with the engine issue. And y’all changing your plan to hold of on the Pacific Crossing is a good thing for now. Check out this Marina Chiapas when going up the coast line. I came across two other Utube channels that Highly recommended it and looks great and great friendly service. Be sure not to rush. Y’all have a wonderful day ahead. ❤❤❤❤
I think you have make a very good decision to delay your Pacific crossing and your reasons are all extremely valid. You seem to have the time so why not take advantage of it and head north for a while. I follow Salt and Tar and, if you have not seen their TH-cam it might be informative about cruising in Mexico in the hurricane season. It's worth just making sure the engine is ok before running it too much. Keep up the good work. You have a great boat by the way!
If one begins to start sailing, one will soon begin to hear stories, and a *lot* of them. The good thing there's always someone who has something interesting to say: It could be about people, places, experiences, sailing techniques, equipment - what is good and bad and why - and a lot of other things. One of the funny ones is a boat ran aground 28 times during *one* trip - and easily got free 28 times - because tide had moved sand at the seabed - changing the depth everywhere making charts totally useless. FYI for those *always* assume too much: No, it's not bad seamanship.
I love watching you two you complement one another so well and there is no talking over one another, yo explain things so well, and you my dear are beautiful and so photogenic, good on you guys enjoy your sailing.
Western Australia has huge tides, but the Kimberleys have the biggest and fastest tides. Check them out. Great vlog Tribe, now ur over our side of the planet, come on down to Aussie, ur both very welcome to the best beaches, anchorages and just amazing stuff to do. I'll put the kettle on!!! 🤣👍could be dirty injectors or clogged filters.
Another thing you can do if worried about water in the engine is to try turning the engine over on the crankshaft pulley. Hope all is well again on Teulu. All the best to you both from us in the English Riviera Good decision on postponing the Pacific crossing you’ll meet up again with friends.
would love to see Honduras, looks like a nice area to sail with many small to larger islands. Better get someone to look at that Engine before you head West across the big blue!
Great video as always guys, we love watching your journey as we embark on the start of our own in the south of the UK. One thing that we would love you guys to cover is how you manage to stay so long in places visa wise etc?
Love the channel - I learnt to sail in Mount Wise age 5 where you spent those months learning and preparing at Mayflower Marina. So I connect with your amazing adventures in the sun. And it's very grey and drizzly here. ANYWAY your lie at anchor will be affected by your new stack (mini sail) and your boom was at 45 degrees. Keep going, keep smiling 😄
Diesel bug is usually start then peter out. See the sailing brothers video. Poor start ! It is worth checking valve clearances. As well as earth connections.
Mexico is good cruising. Cheap. Awesome food and culture Sea of cortez is awesome. Tropical in purto vallarta and desert in cabo. Its unique. I am in thailand and i do miss mexico. I was 3 years there.
I hate to see you guys having to struggle with the engine. 🙏 everything is all right. I have thought for a while you were rushing through the Caribbean, glad you’re going to slow down and enjoy what you have se out to do. Safe travels always.
Very nice on the new stack packs- I’m calling around trying to find someone to put another reef in my main and who can sew a stack pack kit I buy for me. Go Teulu TARDIS!
Lovely video! Brought here by all your previous awesome videos! I did some geology as part of my degree - giant ground sloths were as big as elephants! There were armadillos about the same size as a mini too!
Hey! Nice to hear you are planning to come to NZ ;) I live of Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf. Place is loaded with sail boats so you will love it me thinks.. BTW hope the iron sail is all good..
Yay .. Coming to New Zealand. Bloody fantastic!! Definitely take your time. So many places to see that you will kick yourself if you don't see these places.
If you need a new drone look at the DJI Mavic Air 2. I have had mine for 2 years and have had no problems. They make a smaller drone but wind affects it more. Mine does fine in 20-25 mph winds. They also sell insurance for a reasonable price. If it goes in the water they will fix it or replace it for free. And 1 time if you loose it and can’t recover it they will replace it. I don’t have any deals with them I’m just suggesting them because it a good product.
Love the beanbags that look like they can do helm seats too. Rad! Love the P4P. don't worry, I crashed my first drone the same way practically on the first flight. Actually mine was because I didn't screw one of the self-tightening props on enough so it flew off. And, if flying at home in a house, beware, drones eat lampshades! Clearly not an issue aboard obviously. Just sayin 😆 Hope the engine re-build is going well? ;-) So happy for you both and inspired myself. Following your dreams and being so inspiring. You're both great role models.
Panama City was a blast- that was until the engine wouldn't startI! f you were us though, where would you go? 🌎
Costa Rica then the Sea of Cortez, then French Polynesia. Timing dependent on typhoon season
Your plan is well thought-out. Don't second guess yourselves. Boatwork will be less expensive in Mexico than in French Polynesia. ❤
Sea of Cortez, Mexico. Plenty to see, lots of anchorages. Good food, lots of culture. Sealife, whales. Order parts from US. PIck up at border.
Costa Rica for surfing! Take lots of time looking around. Maybe Easter island at some stage?
"If it is not broke don't fix it" applies to so much we as humans attempt! I have enjoyed every minute of your sail!! Sail on, we are here behind you!
The air filter is also a silencer for the air intake hence the popping sound thats normal on all naturally aspirated diesels

Thanks Jim! We really do, it does make the most sense and hey, we get to visit so many new places 😊

Should watch Parlay Revival Pacific crossing which they have just completed, and the areas they visited
It’s not a race take your time and enjoy your self x
Mexico baby, you guys are gonna have a blast. French Polynesia will still be there.
Who needs French Polynesia when we've got tacos and tequila waiting for us in Mexico? 😉

I think your choice was well made. No sense to hurry, and better to get as ready as possible before you make the crossing.... one step at a time.
Love you. Stay safe. ❤🙏
Haha we know you love them Steve! One of the best things we added last year, I don't know how we survived with out it before. Cheers 😁
Your insights are invaluable, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge! We’ll look into it. Cheers 😊
As it's a diesel could it be build up or fouling of glow-plugs, or a fuel issue?
I remember reading that can cause misfires and a chugging engine... But I'm not familiar with marine engines.
Love you kids! Do take the time to smell the sea breezes and appreciate the beautiful sites. Safe travels. ❤
Thank you for your kind words and wishes! We will cherish every moment.
Possibly water into the engine through the exhaust while sitting in a rough anchorage. Possible bent connecting rod from hydraulic-ing the engine when turning it over on the starter. That’s why it was turning over slowly. Let hope I’m wrong.
just a guess and a test I am sure next week will provide the answer but it sounds like it is hammering at least one valve
1)
Roly-poly anchorages: believe you purchased a stack of buckets recently, have you considered sacrificing a couple to suspend one each side on poles to act as dampers?
Obviously, need to cut a hole in the base of each.
2)
Stack-pack.

Stoked you guys are sailing up the west coast! You’re going to be passing some amazing surf spots, my #1 recommend is Pavones in Costa Rica!
If you drop something in water & want to dry it out, Cover it with rice. The rice will suck up all the water.
Does the kettle come with Tim Tams? We might just take you up on that offer! 😂
@@TeuluTribe for u 2 a whole box😁
It's my Bday today, come pick me up for a wild sail🤣
Let's face it....sometimes you need to go slow if your are eventually to go fast. Happy sailing.
Another thing you can do if worried about water in the engine is to try turning the engine over on the crankshaft pulley.
Hope all is well again on Teulu. All the best to you both from us in the English Riviera
Good decision on postponing the Pacific crossing you’ll meet up again with friends.
Thanks for the advice and well wishes from the English Riviera!
would love to see Honduras, looks like a nice area to sail with many small to larger islands. Better get someone to look at that Engine before you head West across the big blue!
Its a very good plan.
Good decisions ❤❤.
Don't forget of the Central Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone. Loads of clouds and rain so your solar panels are not that useful.
Thanks for the heads up!
Great video as always guys, we love watching your journey as we embark on the start of our own in the south of the UK. One thing that we would love you guys to cover is how you manage to stay so long in places visa wise etc?
I just wanted to say hello to you both and you have come along way since this adventure started. Good job. ❤🇺🇸🇺🇸
Cool move bloody clever
You are going to have fun with this new plan.
Cheers David!
Nice cliffhanger ending!
You have made the right decision slow down do it once do it right
I hate to see you guys having to struggle with the engine. 🙏 everything is all right. I have thought for a while you were rushing through the Caribbean, glad you’re going to slow down and enjoy what you have se out to do. Safe travels always.
You guys should go into teaching! I love listening to your explanations 😁
Drone was seasick in that rollie anchorage!
Hey!
Nice to hear you are planning to come to NZ ;)
I live of Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf.
Place is loaded with sail boats so you will love it me thinks..
BTW hope the iron sail is all good..
Have fun!
Very wise decision, be safe, be happy
Yay .. Coming to New Zealand. Bloody fantastic!! Definitely take your time. So many places to see that you will kick yourself if you don't see these places.
Brilliant..! Cheers
Cheers Jay!
Go to Alaska it’s amazing your boat would be great there, then sail to Hawaii then to the Marquesas Islands
Anchoring near similar design boats great tip!
What a cliffhanger, will thar motor break, or will work fine..........can't wait to find out :-)
How about Hawaii-San Francisco or Los Angeles, then down the Mexican coast?
Sorry for the engine troubles, but makes me glad I have electric- so less complicated! I have a smaller boat though- 33 foot.
Just sayin 😆
Hope the engine re-build is going well? ;-)
So happy for you both and inspired myself. Following your dreams and being so inspiring. You're both great role models.
nice👍...are you planning to go to the Philippines?
Did, you have another key to replace the one Becja lost?
