    Thanks for the videos. Next time you can just use a magnet to lift the lifter so you dont scrape it lol

    Before the heat engine recall by Hyundai our 2.4ltr., engine @ 120K miles our engine was quiet except for the standard GDi injector noise. At 180K now on the engine again the engine is quiet except for the GDi injector noise. We do not have any tappet noise at all.

    I have read that a thicker oil can be used for high mileage engines.
    Mine is a 2.2 diesel that has done 98,000 but is only noisy on startup but has got worse.

      I have the same problem, only on startup, I do not know If this is the cause

    • @paulhotson5820
      @paulhotson5820 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@r1kokoro The problem is with the Hydraulic Lifters as they do wear.
      Mechanical lifters must be built with a small gap between the valve and the bucket that is known as "lash". This lash is required in order to compensate for metal expansion when the engine heats up to operating temperature. That is why the noise is present when the engine is cold. Once the engine warms up, the metal expands, and the pounding caused by the gap is no longer present.
      On my last service I used "Shell Helix Ultra Pro AG 5W-30" not cheap but has improved the noise on startup alot.

      Arbitrarily going over to a higher (thicker) oil viscosity is not the solution for hydraulic lifter noise. Higher viscosity oils will help in reducing main bearings noise. Lifter noise is caused by a stuck lifter. Do an oil change by using the recommended oil from a reputable oil manufacturer, observe engine noise for about 1 month (1,000 miles) and see whether it corrects the lifter noise. At this point, if the lifter noise persists, add about 2 ounces of 'Marvel Mystery Oil' available from most auto parts stores. Observe performance for 1 month (1,000 miles). If the lifter sound persists, it is time for an engine oil flush (Too detailed to explain here). Doing an engine oil flush has worked very well for me in the past. Do not take any shortcuts if you are going this route. Good luck!

      @@claudea79The 2.2 Kia has non self adjusting lifter's, from what I have read is that they all need to be replaced after some time.
      The thicker oil has helped a little after change and soon after the oil makes it's way up on startup the noise stops!
      Thanks for your advice it's much appreciated!!!

    • @claudea79
      @claudea79 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulhotson5820 thank you for your response! You are correct! Hydraulic lifters are not adjustable, and besides, you have his noise only at startup. The higher viscosity oil will help because of overall wear; a thicker oil film (wedge) is needed. In the past, I did this at around 100K miles. In the event of a stuck lifter, an oil flush might free it up.

    Buckets suck dude. I don’t even replace them anymore, I do a new head or nothing at all.. A lot of my customers are terrible with oil changes and we know these cams can be insanely picky with oil viscosity
