American Bandstand - January 7, 1967 FULL EPISODE PART 1 -Rango

  • Happy New Year, 1967!
Today’s episode has the infamous “Rango” Rate-A-Record. This was often cited by Dick Clark (and others) as one of, if not the most, difficult and strangest songs ever played on Rate-A-Record. Our own Don Sanuskar, along with Deedra Higgins, had the happy task of dancing on the riser during this classic AB moment. (Well done Don!) I’m not too surprised they played Frankie Laine’s song, as promoting other ABC shows was fairly common on Bandstand, but I am surprised at how high it was rated at 82 ½?!? June Strode even thought it might become a hit!
Today’s episode also has a nice mix of the great music of the mid 60’s including Motown, British Invasion, Psychedelic, and American pop. Watch for Dick Clark to, sort of, dance along at his podium to “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron”.
Neil Diamond singing “Solitary Man” is one of my favorite AB guest appearances….good call Roni Menacker. When Neil was singing “You Got To Me”, I wonder if Frank Vanderpuil was thinking “hey, that’d be a good song to swing dance to”. He and Judy Michaud will win the ’67 Swing Dance Contest 3 months later, dancing to this song.
“Rango” ran for 17 episodes in the Winter and Spring of ’67. It looks pretty funny, (despite the politically incorrect Pinkcloud, yikes) Did anyone watch it?
In the Billboard Hot 100 today:
    1) I’m A Believer - The Monkees
    2) Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron - The Royal Guardsmen
    3) Tell It Like It Is - Aaron Neville
    4) Winchester Cathedral - The New Vaudeville Band
    5) Sugar Town - Nancy Sinatra
    7) Good Thing - Paul Revere & the Raiders
    8) Words of Love - The Mamas and the Papas
    28) Color My World - Petula Clark
    40) Mame - Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
    47) I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night) - The Electric Prunes
    88) It Takes Two - Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston (new on the charts this week)
While the ’21 new year here in the U.S. is off to an “eventful” start, I hope YOUR new year has been, and continues to be, much more riot and Covid free. Here’s to a better rest-of-2021!
Thank you for watching and thank you for all of your comments. Even when I haven’t posted anything, I still get about 30-40 comments a day and I read them all (for better or for worse, lol).

It’s 2021 and I still live between the years 1964-67! Great Music, TV, Cars, Movies, beautiful girls, and a simpler life! It seems to me that people got along better back then! My heart is still stuck in that era! On January 7, 1967, I turned 8 years old!

IMy grandparents were in Vietnam, @ this time, my parents weren't born until 1975, my sisters and me were born in 1997-1999. I am a musician, and we do 1965-2023. Ultimately, I want a hit record. Back to the story at hand: the girl says she is 16, meaning she was born in 1950! She is pushing 74 now. I am fascinated about time. Literally, missing time, parallel time. going back in time. These videos are a snapshot in time. This will always be from January 7, 1967. I never heard of or seen( my parents either,) that great shakes stuff. It looks great. God bless everyone here, and also a big thank you, for whomever is responsible for this fantastic video. February 2, 2024, 1:56 AM , in Cleveland.

Welcome back! It's been such a slow 6 weeks since the last post, nothing much has happened in this country. But seriously, nothing much has happened with the vaccines, hopefully that will soon change. About this episode, I remember watching "Rango" on Friday nights after my favorite show "The Time Tunnel". That's all I remember about "Rango", I don't remember Norman Alden but I do remember him as the man who drowned in a bowl of chicken soup on "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman". Frankie Laine's "Rango" might have been a worthy follow-up to his 1949 hit "Mule Train". That other r-a-r song was totally forgettable and those 2 critics seemed to have a tambourine fetish. Time for me to flip over to part 2 and maybe post a comment there.

I LOVE this whole episode!! Don is rockin' on out with Robin and Deedre. Hey Don, why were you dancing with Deedre? I spotted Danny on the bleachers and later back with Deedre. I think we've asked this before....anybody ever fall off the riser???
Peg and Frank looked lively as always, except Frank didn't appear to be overly fond of line dancing to Rango. Picky picky picky! 😉 24:34 Frank did give Peg's sister Dona a smooth turn on the floor to Good Thing. Who said there was no interracial dancing? 25:08 Famous and Marsha Silverman looked great together.
Neil Diamond looked like a baby! He clearly was uncomfortable during the "You Got To Me" instrumentals. One of the ladies should've grabbed him for a dance to get back to his vocals!
My hubs saw the Electric Prunes about 1967 in Paducah Kentucky. EP and Left Bank opened for a very late, drunk and stoned Beach Boys. But no one cared. 😀
Aaron thank you so much for this great surprise! I have missed you and all of the regulars on this channel. Everyone has been such a blessing to me. Ok, I had to stop by here to see what Aaron is up to..we had not seen anything in a while from this channel for a while. But I had to because I was tired of hearing a lot of bad news the past few days and weeks with the loss of legends we grew up with, especially if you are a baseball fan. And I am watching this episode on my tee vee too!! You kids who are still with us, especially the AB regulars saw history too when a woman became Vice President.
But other than that, Rango was a short lived series. I wondered if there are film that was existed when many television stations destroyed their tapes..
Fun fact: Snoopy’s creator Charles M. Schultz sued the songwriters of “Red Baron” after they used the beagle’s name without permission. In spite of that, the song reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966.
Dancer Don made the most of that “Rango” song with his hop..And I betcha these kids were wondering “What in the heck we are dancing 💃🏻 to?”
Happy to see all my regulars like Famous, June, the nerd ( John Pollard) and the rest with these clips took me back and help me escape the mess we are having in this country in spite of electing a good and decent President for a change.
Thanks Aaron for this escape. Hope to see part two soon!

Great to see you again @Gayle Lecus. These shows help me sort of escape everything that’s going on too, at least for a few minutes. Great insights too!

I've often wondered, if they threw in a few seconds of Hang On Sloopy, just to poke fun at the fact some people mistakingly thought the McCoy's were saying Hang on "Snoopy". 🤔

If That's life by Frank Sinatra was number 1, instead of number 2, do you honestly think would've played it?... I doubt it. Can you imagine seeing them dancing to a song their parents would approve of? 😊

that was a damn good tune! Wonder why it went nowhere. '67 was one of the most competetive years in pop history, so it faced some heavy-hittin' competition.
