I would also like to add that how fast you finish this course also probably depends on your background. If you have never touched coding before. It will be overwhelming for the first few months. But if you keep making end-to-end projects, you will become more confident and you will get over the steep learning curve. They say that it takes roughly 6 months and I say it is pretty accurate. So don't worry too much about not understanding concepts in the beginning. Focus on learning 1 concept well every day and you will eventually reach a point where you have a broad understanding of how computer languages work.

I'm on the 6th course of this Certificate, and man, self-study learning is hard! My brain is semi-fried after the past 4 months of going through it, and distractions are a real thing. Having the discipline to follow along with the videos, read the documents, practice with the hands-on exercises, and pass the quizzes is a challenge, especially without an accountability system.
I can see why a lot of people don't finish it, as you really have to keep at it and you don't have anyone checking in with you.
Making and maintaining a portfolio seems intimidating, but I know that's one of the best ways to keep skills sharp and setup for success.

depends how you learn, i hate having an accountability system, reason being is that i dont learn the standard school way. i dont know why but i need to keep drilling information until its muscle memory, if there was an accountability system for someone like me, it would only cause more stress as im prone to messing up in the beginning, especially with something like this that i have no knowledge of

    • @aalevin

I ended up finishing this Certification around March 2022. I think a good strategy for learning, and having the material stick a little better, is to have shorter study and practice sessions, but to have them daily, whether it's the first thing upon waking, or whenever you have 15 minutes to get through a lesson or two. I did do my fair share of cramming multiple hours some days. There is quite a bit of material, and I think it will take most people a few months to get through it. If you've used the software they cover, and are able to devote a decent amount of time daily to this, I could see someone getting through it pretty quickly.
My review (which I may make a video of) is that this Certificate, while valuable, seems to better suit someone who is already working with spreadsheets, databases, and the related software or programming languages, rather than someone completely new to the field of data analytics. I don't agree with Google stating that these certificates are equal to a four year bachelor's degree. I view these certificates as more like one semester of courses, as they do take on average 3-6 months, roughly the same as a semester. If you're new to the field, build on this certificate by learning and practicing Excel, SQL, Tableau, and more, then, after going through a few months in each of those, I could see it being similar in value to a bachelor's degree.

Just as a some words of encouragement counteracting her comment: if you have a baby or a full time job... you can STILL do it! I have both a baby and a full time job and I’m currently working on my Google certificate. It is TOTALLY possible!! I could even argue it is perfect for people in my position too. It’s approximately 4-6 months or however long it takes you (as it is at your own pace) and there you are heading back into the work world with something more to present. Totally agree with you Tina, the second course of the certificate I think is one of the topics that a big audience ignores. I have several years of experience using tools such as R, PowerBI, SQL, Python etc. And to be honest even if this a beginner certificate I felt that "Asking the right questions" was an area I wanted to reinforce. Furthermore, I do think that this certificate can give you the right framework to deal with different Data Analysis problems. In the first course they give a lot of emphasis to the Ask, Prepare, Process, Analyze, Share and Action and I do think simple aspects such as this one are what make a good data analyst.

There were lots of videos, reading materials, hands-on activities, quizzes, and challenges to complete, but they're essential parts of the process to master what we learn. My way of taking note and stay focus, are quite similar to your guide, that is setting up a framework of the content I'll learn in each week for each course, and just write down the key concepts or things to keep in mind for each lesson. I really appreciate the fact that I've scheduled my learning block for this Google track before, because the schedule is what keeping me motivated and concentrated on my study. In my view , certificates will only give you just an overview. In Production everything is messed - no data is clean, hunting for data is real challenge, skills are one thing which people will Anyway gain with time but business understanding is the key and what ur analysis bring and how it impacts decision making. Think from the perspective of business , define KPIs that can help business .. rest will come naturally. Just knowing python , SQL , R won't work .. extensive practice in programming languages can make you better in it but what about business understanding ? That's the key to become succesful data analyst or data scientist.

Do these Certs help to land you a job? NO. While it definitely helps, potential employer will also look at your portfolio. Spend more time on the Capstone project or maybe analyse public data. You need to show that you can apply your analytics knowledge. I think the most important skill for an analyst will be story-telling. So create more stories and present it in your portfolio/blogs/linkedin/website.
To everyone who are still considering, all the best! it's going to be an amazing journey!

Google will DEFINITELY hire people that finish this course.....who also have a Master's Degree Data Science and 5 years experience....that's the part they don't tell you. I'm sure they will hire ONE maybe TWO fresh out-the-gate developers just so they can put them in a testimonial video, as advertising for the course but that's about it. Still probably a good idea to be in the first wave of people that take the course. The smaller companies will probably hire a bunch of people.

This is true of the IT industry as a whole. They advertise these courses in such a way that seems to say: 'with no experience, learn at your own pace, get an entry level job in this sector with this certificate right away!' In reality, very few, if any companies will employ you without at least 2 years experience in the field, no matter what they say about how many positions need to be filled.
On the plus side, this is a good course that's affordable and teaches good materials. Something to add to your portfolio I suppose.

Time is scarce for most humans and just because a mother has a baby doesn’t mean she cannot do this entire certification. It just means she will take a year or longer to complete maybe . So please don’t discourage anyone who is interested but has kids or other time consuming responsibilities. You will be surprised at mothers resilience.

Courses 2 through 5 look super practical just in general. I start as a data scientist in a few weeks (unless something goes wrong), so I already have a position lined up and don't really need a cert in analytics. However, I might take just these courses anyway because I've never been extensively trained in data cleaning, exploration or picking the right questions to ask.

Thank you for your info, especially the last part about suggested time dedication and partnering with others. *I took the first 6 days of the Google certificate, then cancelled before the fee, doing the first 2 or 3 weeks of lessons. I was very excited about it, but discontinued because the lessons I took didn't cover any technical exercises and was unsure about paying to find out what the technical exercises would be like. I'm currently looking over the required technical skills in other places

Econ Grad school in the fall at the University of San Francisco, Data Science seems like a great skill set to have before stepping foot in a grad school program.

This video was very helpful because I was on the fence about it and if it was relevant to getting a job. I have a degree in English and am truly looking for a comprehensive course to get into a data analytics career. I have played around with Python before, but haven't taken it seriously until now, related to the course. I do realize that this course may or may not directly result in a job right after, but I'm excited about the potential to get hired.
