Thanks for that, what a drive! My first car was an LJ Torana S always dreamed of a GTR-XU1. This car handles like a go-kart, of course it must be fully worked over. Love to see a full race video.
Such an awesome car. My first car was the same colour XU1. I can still remember being driven by my Dad at ridiculous speeds, sliding around corners. But that was 1/4 century ago, though.
my brother had a genuine gtr ,he completely restored it and after it was completed he loaned it to me for a week,there was a hill near my place with a gentle curve at the top and it is the only car that I have had to brake going up that hill, it would go over that hill at 100mph if it was a straight road.GREAT LITTLE CAR,I also owned one it was a 2 door with a 173 and three on the tree, I sold it to another brother,but before I did I painted it red,he had a good run out of it.

@@-sandman4605 Isn't that the truth. Far less bolt on stuff, but those of us that run fast sixes, looked for ever single hp we could find, no mater where it was laying in the engine. Often it required going places where conventional engine builders wouldn't go.

Totally inconceivable with Red motor technology prior to ....

@@Greenfig85 Yes mate, I reckon it'd be regularly rebuilt. The 330hp from a 9/12 port head would be about as much as it'd go n/a. J.ZED heads are pretty much hens teeth. Must be real keen to spend that kind of coin, but a 420hp red 6 would be a hoot to drive.

XU1’s had triple SU’s didn’t they? I’d say they’d be letting all that sound wind out, I know the 6pack Chargers and their triple Weber’s made a sublime symphony out of the 265’s

That was a while ago. 2014? I was a spectator/ crew at that meeting. The Torana I was helping on was mid field That is a very well driven and well prepared car, well except the shifter!! Though as of PI this year 2020, is a very bent car unfortunatly. It will arise again I am told. Hope so.
Yes, it was a while back. I was standing on the fence right opposite the crash this year as it happened, it was devastating. Thankfully Andrew is making great progress with the repairs.
Back in the 1970s, I couldn't afford an XU1 so I bought a brand new LC Torana in Chrome Yellow and tricked it up with XU1 wheels and stripes. Loved that car. Now I drive a boring D-Max 4x4.
Less mass more horsepower , magic. Gearbox wasn’t staying on plot. Loved the video. I’d like to see more drivers inputs on camera not to be critical of what you done hear.

Umm no. I have built performance versions of both and it is a fallacy that the smaller engines rev harder. I even took a 179 HP engine out to 192, and while it went hard, it didn't go as hard as some of the 202's I built.

Racing HQ's and these old Torana's all use Genuine RED MOTOR blocks . Those later ones were Dodgy . The Red's were 179 , 186 and 202 .
what i want to know is how are they getting 330 hp out these things? what heads do they use and what do they do to them.. what comp ratio? fuel? im assuming massive roller cam no doubt.. but where has the extra power come from compared to when they raced back in the day... think in another video glean said they were putting out about 240hp at bathurst 1972/3
Can listen to this as if it's music ac/dc ect sounds beautiful mate just need a louder horn so them ford owners can hear it over there squeaky front ends 😊 nah like the Ford's vals they do good job trying 😊 love the xa gt coupe to mate had one sold recently in last ten years wild violet left Tassie for mainland nice bigger the wheels the tougher . I cannot speak for the owner but reasonably certain this car is 330 flywheel hp, not at the rears. Nonetheless, over 300hp in a 202 is an achievement.

That's a good Torana, very smooth driver too - high speed grip thru the corners, late brake and 7,000 rpm - definite V8 eater.
