Time Team S19-E01 Dig by Wire

  • Tony Robinson and the Team visit a tiny windswept island off the coast of Wales. The only way to get to it is by rigging a 500-metre zip wire way above the wave-lashed rocks.
    Incredibly, it seems that Gateholm Island in Pembrokeshire was once inhabited, but whether by Romans, Vikings, Celts or druids nobody knows.
    A handful of mysterious objects were found on the island years ago, including a rare Roman stone phallus and a beautiful bronze stag, suggesting that it may have been some sort of religious centre.
    Of course, the Team have to dig for answers, but the weather's throwing everything it has at them. To make their task that bit tougher, they discover they also need to dig at a second site a quarter of a mile away. Although this one, thankfully, is on the mainland.
    Team leader Francis Pryor thinks it looks like what they're investigating is a classic Iron Age fort, with curved banks and ditches on one side and a sheer cliff on the other.
    If he's right, it should give Phil Harding and his diggers at least enough work to keep them busy for three days. And if he's wrong, there's no hiding place on this beautiful but bleak coast!

    Good points from several people here. I would also suggest that using Stewart Ainsworth less was a big mistake. He made valuable and very interesting contributions and from my point of view he was one of the best parts of the show, combined with Victor and John.

    Stuart Ainsworth was the true Genius - when he showed up I'd think 'Stuart will save the day!' :) ... and I've loved every show, and the whole crew ...
    Lack of promotion, schedule fiddling, seeking some 'demographic' ... it's busine$$ vs human endeavor, above the lowest common denominator ... this signals the dumbing down Prof Aston pointed to in a 2013 local Somerset article ...
    Still have the Specials to watch ...
    What a great adventure, over the years!
    I've learned sooooo much!

    The unsung hero of the entire series, up until now, is Victor for his continuous portrayal of life as it used to be. Many thanks Victor for your pencils, inks, and water colours. Also, to the person who uploaded the entire series. Sad you had no say in the introduction of the 2 people at the beginning of series 19 as I never watched them for their lack of knowledge was abysmal.

    • @Wotdermatter
      @Wotdermatter 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** When I made my comments there was no intention for them to be construed as "sniping," as you call it. He certainly gave no appearance of knowing more than the combined knowledge of all of the others, some of whom had started to dig before he was even a twinkle in his father's eye. I could find no background on either of them and certainly did not enjoy the approach of either of them. I never saw, or heard, of his credentials/background before his first appearance. Still do not believe either fitted into the format, and that opinion was shared by many. I live in Canada and Thailand, do not have television, and came across the series completely by accident.

    • @Wotdermatter
      @Wotdermatter 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I extend an apology to you as I thought my comment had gone to one known as Celto Loco. As mentioned though, I endeavored to find out about his background but met with nothing. As a Clinical Psychologist, retired, with many publications, I also, recommend doing research to uncover the truth, if it is at all possible. Since receiving the comment from the other person, I found Tales of the Green Valley but only watched part of the first episode. My now deceased grandfather and grandmother lived in Yorkshire and he often took me to help out on farms, when I visited him. Much of the technology we used was practically the same, and this was in the 1940-1950 period. Grandmother used the same system for baking and cooking so they were not new to me. She would often take me "hedgerow" shopping and my grandfather was a great poacher.

      How do you recon? Because it's not simple Misogyny on your part is it?

    • @Hypatia4242
      @Hypatia4242 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Stefan Eriksson Well, Mary-Ann was the harbinger of Dr. Aston's departure, the man who helped found the show. The money used to support two non-digging talk artists took time, attention, and money away from the science and credibility of the show, alienating the original viewing base without bringing in a new crowd. The pop-culture and sensationalizing that the two add represents an enormous amount of resources diverted from archeology and history. They spend their time 'interviewing' and adding chat with people who could be talking directly to the camera, talking with Tony, or talking with narration over the experience. Their poorly done jokes and road trips are a distraction and watering down of the experience of cutting into the earth, extracting information through a rigorous and scientific process of investigation.
      Incidentally, misogyny means a dislike for women. I combined a man and woman in my comment and object to them for their lack of educational or entertaining substance. The other people on the show are trained dirt-digging archaeologists and/or Professors at respected institutions. What are Mary-Ann and Alex? I consider them to be the signs and symptoms of watered down game show or talk show mentality. Children among adults.
      But seriously, explain how you might think it misogynistic.

    • @Hypatia4242
      @Hypatia4242 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** There was a thing in British Archeology, the magazine, that quoted Aston as saying the show was being dumbed down, that he was quitting, and there was a little back and forth online about he and Mary-Ann not being happy with one another.
      Whether Mary-Ann or Alex possess a credential or not, one cannot tell by the way they appear and the way they act in these episodes. Perhaps they were ill used by the creative directors, but if they are professionals, they didn't handle the on or off screen situation well and helped doom a show I loved. All my original objections stand.

    • @dfuher968
      @dfuher968 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hypatia4242, I agree wholeheartedly. I fought my way through this episode, but I just cant stand to watch anymore of this. I'll have to make do with watching old episodes again from time to time.
      Also, I checked. Apparently Mary-Ann does have a degree in Archaeology, but she sure sounds a lot more like a brainless ex-model (which she also is) than a scientist. Whether thats due to the producers' demands or her failing at on screen, I have no idea. But I found her a totally useless and very much not needed addition to the show, who took up way too much time being unfunny and giggling while looking pretty. And Stefan Eriksson, Im a woman, Im not a misogynist, I simply hate watching other women disgrace us all by such stereotypical "pretty little bimbo" performances. And Alex was equally unimpressing, hes supposed to be replacing Stewart, but he does a piss poor job of it.
      Also, I read, that Mick Aston quit, partly coz he felt, the producers were increasingly dumbing down the program, making it useless, and partly due to the producers firing half the experts and hiring those 2 instead without so much as talking to him (the creator and consultant) about it. Cant say, I blame him. This certainly ruined the show for me.

    Having introduced Mary-Ann and Alex, Time Team then doesn't seem to know what to do with them. Did the show really need a new co-presenter? In my opinion, Tony did the job just fine indeed. Both Mary-Ann and Alex seem like lovely, intelligent, well-informed people, but overall they didn't offer anything new or vital to the show. The ratings for Time Team had been slipping and so it is understandable that the Producers would be keen to try new things to rejuvenate the ratings, however their ideas about bringing in new people was perhaps not the best move. The show worked just fine with the familiar faces. My feeling is that the problem wasn't with the format or the people etc, it was just that the show had been on air for nearly a generation, and that can induce a feeling of apathy on the part of the viewers. Having said that, the show seems to have gathered an enormous following outside the UK. It had truly become global. Ok, so the British viewership had declined, that's to be expected from any successful show that had been on air for so many years. Like 'Doctor Who', I think that Time team needs to go away for a while and then come back with amazing new sites. Time Team is an important television show, an essential part of the landscape of British television entertainment, and to simply let it go is a tragedy. I feel that increasingly, the British people want to know about their heritage and Time Team answered those desires. However, television politics and money sank this show. Ok, shit happens. But if we want Time Team back, we can make it happen.

      Mary-ann was obviously added for sex appeal ... yes she's one gorgeous woman ... what the show truly needs is newer content of unknown sites from around it's viewership area ... trouble with that is travel aint cheap ... Tony should do more re-enactments and experiential work instead of pulling diggers off the sites pull the commentators off and let them learn more about the life of the people they are digging back up.

    Mick M. I am in Bangkok and viewing the Time Team series. Just watched the beginning of Season 19 Episode 1, and only watched the new female for about 30 seconds (up to her displaying lack of knowledge about the first three items displayed from previous digs). She has no clue about archaeology, artifacts and their meanings, and even her speech sent shivers down my spine. A waste of time having somebody like that on such an important show. Sad to say, turned off my computer as I will not watch people who do not know what they are talking about. From comments from friends Alex is just as clueless.

It's noteworthy that even though both Mary-Ann Ochota and Alex Langlands have Archaeology degrees, they do indeed seem to "dumb-down" the show somewhat. Also, if the goal was to "dumb-down" then using Dr. Francis Pryor was a good choice. His silliness is in marked contrast to his scholarly eminence, and his style is so totally different from Mick Aston's. I always find him odd to watch because of those contrasts,

    I think the comment that this was "Americanized" is rather fair. Our history shows were dumbed down long ago. It is really unfortunate that the new presenters were encouraged to seem as though they knew nothing. I thought running up the hill was painful to watch, although collecting wild plants was interesting.
    I also have noticed the increase in camera work focusing on the women diggers' chests. I think I would have been angry if I had been part of the team, and would have worked to sabotage those views somehow (different shirt, scarf, whatever).

      Big Brother came from Europe and that is where the reality TV wave came from. The reason the History Channel, then the Food Network and Discovery are filled with reality pap instead of programs that fit the name on the tin is because it is cheaper to create the program in editing than create content from research and physical effort.
      I think you're imagining the camera work thing. It's reflective of the type of work done (you can't trowel in a trench while upright), when it is done (Summer), and the differences in comfort clothing. Men these days don't wear V-neck T-shirts alone. Look at the episodes with college kids. It's fashion not intent.

    Ok so the show is miffed, but the subject matter is still wicked relevant, right? With that being said did anyone pay attention to the the cliffs, surrounding rock material, soil color, and what not? I distinctly notice crisscrossing quartz veins and telltale color clues to mineralization. The Romans were known to be on the lookout for minerals they could exploit. Is it possible that this was here because someone during the occupation period had also noticed the same thing? Is there any evidence of mining? Or smelting?

    I think a lot of people give the two new people in this season a lot of flak, when really, just like Tony for the past 18 seasons, as hosts they're asking the questions that the audience might have. It's a way to present information to the camera. They have to sound dumb on purpose.
    Having said all that, this season was a very dramatic change in the way the show was presented and edited (although to be fair it was starting to creep in in season 16). Silly tense music, spending too much time focusing on action and movement, exaggerating the drama wildly. They took a page out of Discovery Channel's book and went all American on us.

      ***** I just found this article/interview with Raksha Dave about the sad ending to the show. (Link is at the end of my diatribe!)Very interesting. On one point I completely agree with her was the disparity in the treatment of female/male archaeologists. (Side note: I'm a female, but old school in many ways, definitely not a feminist!) However, it seemed like more and more, the only focus on the female arch's was to zoom in on their breasts as they were digging. I realize TV is going to be like that, but you just don't expect it on an academic show! I don't even own a TV here in the US because of the garbage aired. Unfortunately, it seems there will be less and less educational programs for those of us not absorbed by sex and partying!

    Sigh.. this is the season that just sucked the essence from the show.. ch4 should never have cut Micks contribution as a decision maker about the production.. people loved the show because it made their brain tick and they learned something.. & the cast chemistry was integral to making the process enjoyable.. I cant blame Mick for leaving in protest, sigh.. He was an absolute gift to humanity from the universe, and he’s been sorely missed 😢..
    the number of people whose minds were engaged and inspired to do things about history must be endless..
    I will always love the show, and I’ve watched and rewatched all of them… but. Starting this season, it’s a completely different show. It really is..
    I’m SO SO SO Glad they’re making a crowdfunded reboot.. so many of the early faces are back 🥰.. I really hope that as the news gets around, they’ll be able to really make a full return to production..🤞🤞🤞🤞

    I am not from UK so idk anything about the nature there, but watching this half way by now (will do till the end) - I am wondering that if some of the land has eroded from the entry to the 'isle' - would it not have eroded significantly at the 'fort' site too given it is on the edge of the cliffs. I almost suppose they will way something about that at some point. How ever - what really peaks my interest. Would there be more of the red colored rock base around the cliffs all over the area in general? OR is it just on that 'isle' with the very red rock cliffs. I mean that kind of 'exception' (if it is) - change to what seems otherwise rather grey rock on the faces of the other cliffs of the area - it could maybe have made the place rather special in the eyes of people at different points of history. Even before Christianity or the Romans.

    I don't think there is anything magical about the location, or sacred. Actually these last episode had the highest budget of all the series.
      Budget cuts weren't the cause of those changes.
      Trying to further commercialise was the problem.
      Though even before those changes the show hat lost half its viewers.
      These changes were basically just a hail Mary to try and get it back and running.
      They aren't however the cause of the end, that was already coming before.
      Which is to be expected for a show running for a whole generation, at some point it stops being interesting.
