    1) Do you think people who use tarot psychologically should be able to express themselves freely, authentically, without apology and without fear of being accused of giving backhanded insults? In the same manner that you believe you should be able to, with regards to tarot deck over consumptions and consumerism?
    2) The tarot community on TH-cam has turned into social clubs and shopping groups way before you joined it.
(Sacred Seed, whose fans I see lamenting the commercialisation of tarot in this comment section, was the first tarot channel that I know of who included a "what's new in the tarot market" shopping format in her content, alongside her more substantial ones. She is a pragmatist who knew how TH-cam works).
    3) You posit that fortune telling with tarot is the old tradition of tarot. The implication being that other approaches to tarot are mere pretenders. The old tradition of fortune telling with tarot is no doubt yours. But for some of us, for me, tarot is part of the new world. Therefore, a new tool, to use as we see fit. I have my own magical tradition, which includes divination and fortune telling that are done the ancient ways. None of which involves tarot. I prefer my own magical tradition.
    4) I am still baffled as to why you think fortune telling with tarot is considered beneath those who use tarot psychologically. Where did you get this idea from?
(I lost my previous comment due to editing with my VPN on so TH-cam considered me a bot and removed it)

    • @MaryGraceFahrun
      @MaryGraceFahrun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      1) Yes.
      2) I know. I was there as a viewer before starting my own channel.
      3) I do not "imply"anything. I speak my mind and I think I'm quite clear that my thoughts, feeling, experiences, opinions are all my own.
      4) Other channels have posted videos dedicated to how they offer Tarot readings to the public for money but they do not do: "predictive readings" and "third-party readings". What I find ironic is cartomancy has always been about asking "what is going to happen?" and "what is the other person thinking/feeling?"

    • @NobodyHere
      @NobodyHere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      1) OK
      2) OK
      3) Let me rephrase: Tarot for fortune telling = Old tradition, traditional, old fashioned. (Your tradition).
      VIS A VIS:
Tarot for fortune telling = Not, and never part of tradition. Not old. Not ancient. New. So: Fortune telling is ONE way to use it. Not the traditional way to use it.
The only reason why the matter of WHOSE tradition is relevant in a video piece about you and our own thoughts and experiences is because you are using it as foundation to comment on those who do NOT. (Unless I misunderstood, in which case, I shall stand corrected).
      4) I've seen those around too. But. I still don't understand how you get "insult" from that. Yah. Cartomancy by definition is always about future casting. There is no doubt about that. But taromancy is just one use of tarot. As cartomancy is but one use of playing cards. And bibilomancy is but one use of books. Don't you agree?
      PS:
Don't worry about replying. I shall spare both of us more of the things that a certain group of people have been dolling out for years, to all of our exhaustions. We both best served with directing our energy elsewhere. I respect your courage to be blunt, and honest. Because I prefer to communicate in the same manner. Peace, and blessings.

"Infomercialuzing of tarot channels"... Yes, so very much of this. I'm a deck collector but I'm always looking for non-deck content on tarot tube. I appreciate flip throughs as they help me avoid bad buying decisions, but I'd love for my feed to be full of non-deck/non-flip-through tarot content. Thank so much for being you and for continuing to create videos!

Haven't watched all of this video yet, but what's ironic to me is that it takes either deck walk-throughs or controversy for a tarot channel to get big enough to be noticed enough to have much of a voice on anything else that's important. For channels that never took that route, they may always have posted in-depth content about tarot but very few people know they exist.

Mary-Grace, you’re the best & an honest, refreshing voice in the community 😄 Now to quote you, “There’s nothing more boring to me than a book on tarot.” Haha! That makes me feel a whole lot better after wading through tarot books & feeling like I wasn’t absorbing anything I was reading & then abandoning the book. I’ve learnt so much just from life and my own personal experiences/dreams/revelations. Keep the fab content up, I find your videos & your unapologetic sass utterly delightful 💅🏻

I loved watching tarot content when I first found it for studying and learning. Some years later it was about new decks and unboxing videos without any depth of meaning or personal experience reading with a deck. I also got caught up with buying all the new decks and old ones I had missed since I only had 2-3 decks for over 20 years. I remember your video when you said you missed those days when you had an intimate relationship with a few decks and reading cards should be a magical, sacred experience.

Love Love Love this video. Thank you for being so honest. I only had the Morgan Greer for 20 years. Discovered tarot tube and boom suddenly I had over 100 tarot and oracle decks in a matter of months.
It was causing me stress and it felt so wasteful, so I’ve sold many but it’s still a work in progress. Tarot tube definitely had a huge influence on me thinking I needed to buy decks in order to understand or connect with tarot. Now I rationalize it as being basic economics. Many of the tubers rely on TH-cam for at least some of their regular income. They rely on promotional freebies for review in order to get views. If someone is benefiting financially it becomes more about protecting the source of income than the passion for tarot. Knowing that, I can be more discerning not only with what I buy, but who I choose to listen to

  • @DianeJarecki
    @DianeJarecki 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A large part of why I deleted my last TH-cam channel was because of malaise about my own content and unhappiness about what was happening in the TarotTube community, of which I decided I no longer wanted to be a part, so I totally understand what you’re saying. I also deleted my subs to most tarot channels, only keeping the ones that were deeper and did more than just tarot content. Now I’m happier with my content and I’m doing my own thing as an outsider. Funny, but that's exactly how I felt the first time I opened the RWS deck in the familiar yellow box, and I never used it to read. It's still one of my least favorite decks. It's fascinating hearing your journey Mary-Grace. I've binged way too much on decks at times too, and then have gotten rid of about half of what I've bought and I still have a sizable collection and more decks than I really use. I'll be tuning in for part 2. 🧡💜

Yes, I fell into this trap of tarot-deck consumerism, back in December 2018. I learned the hard way, I didn't need that many decks, but I think everyone has the right to purchase how many decks and their unique purposes for it. Everyone has a different relationship in how they use the Tarot, which is multi-faceted and evolves over time. For me, I use Tarot for divination and spiritual/psychological reasons. It just depends on the situation. Also, I'm an art lover and visual intuitive, I'm very picky about how I buy tarot (art, style, functionality, energic vibe, purpose, unique from my other decks, etc.). I still have the bad habit of buying new decks, but it's getting better gradually - I give myself a 6-month to one-year waitlist, before buying a deck, if that deck will burn a hole in my head and stubbornly won't go away (it may be a solid sign I need it in my life for a good reason) or fades away easily over time. My first channel of the tarot scene was the Hermit's Cave. To this day, I still jokily blame that channel for being an almost-recovering and still struggling tarot addict. It's a work in progress!

I’m not a big consumer of “Tarot Tube.” Heck, I didn’t even know that’s what it was called! But I, too, noticed a shift in 2020 to TH-cam Tarot channels being mostly:
    1. Flip-throughs with no commentary.
    2. Self-promotion of courses/books/decks.
    3. Tarot hoarding.
    4. Tarot purging.
    5. Overemphasis on “intuitive” and devaluing of traditional cartomancy meanings/knowledge. (And I will point a finger at a well-known author here: Biddy. Her derogatory comments about predictive Tarot made me so mad, I nearly threw her book across the room.)
I was just so sick of it all. I pretty much burned my whole YT channel to the ground over the hateful comments from both inside and outside the community. Well, that and YT’s less-than-helpful policies over content. The good news is that TH-cam’s policies improved, so I’m back. But Facebook? I deleted my profile altogether and will *never* return. The toxicity that was slowly creeping into my FB Group was making me crazy. I didn’t want to spend time policing people; I just wanted a place to share tips and techniques.
Anyway: Thank you for your honesty!

You inspire me to be unapologetically who I am, Mary Grace!
I’ve learned so much from your videos…I can relate to your experience as a Tarot reader - I read Tarot the same way you do (divination) but I keep getting pulled into the Tarot tube trap (which I accept full responsibility for!) of the mainstream or new age way of reading which involves studying the archetypes, psychology, reading tarot books, etc.
Thank you for reminding me to be who I am and read Tarot in a way that feels right for me!! 🧚‍♀️💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

I’ve watched this twice now. So on point. I’ve been reading since 1998 when I was still in high school. Something has shifted with tarot. It used to be this practice that required you to really go deep, to put in the practice, to seek out teachers to learn from. Now anyone with an indie deck and a cell phone is a tarot TH-cam star and expert. And it’s all about whether you are using the latest and greatest deck. 90% of these TH-cam readers don’t even know their astrological associations. What happened to depth in tarot? What happened to putting in the work?

I like deck reviews and getting new decks. I also like collection videos. That being said, I agree that there's a lot of content about deck reviews and not as much about actual cartomancy and divination. Like you, I started watching TarotTube around the time Sacred Seed created her channel. I really appreciated her content. Luckily we have TarotTubers such as yourself who are currently making interesting, thoughtful, and honest content. Thanks!

Great video that resonates on so many levels. Have walked a similar path but never tried to set up a video channel. All too hard! I binged on Sacred Seed and others who I stopped following when the emphasis was clearly on deck releases. Mind you the flip throughs have been helpful when deciding what to buy. 2020 was a nuts binge year. What I do need to say is that it is not TH-cam! It is how influencers are using the medium that is the problem. It’s good old commercialism at its worst. Keep putting out meaningful contact with your authentic voice.

First: I love topics like this, your reflections and critical approach❣️⭐️
Consumerism is present in all areas these days. For example, I've also been lamenting for some time that we used to appreciate our music media much more. As nice as it is to have a wide selection at your disposal, it was even more special to appreciate and love the small collection of your own music data! Maybe the overkill of everything is the reason why minimalism is such a big thing right now!?
By the way, I went through this in 2020 - binge watching reviews and buying decks - now I have 73 Tarot- and Oracle-Decks (plus several on my wish list) and it's kind of overwhelming, because I feel, that I can't become familiar with all these decks ... have to reduce this amount at some time ...
    ...
    (still watching)

I can't understand how people can own so many decks and have a deep connection with all of them . Good to try different decks , but its crazy the amount some peeps have . The consumerism does take the magic away a bit.

    My Gibson electric guitar
    My small Roland chorus amp
    My small Hammond organ/elec. piano
    My Albano-Waite and Centennial decks
My beloved Rider-Waite and folk magic book collection
My candles, incense and black cat folk magic figurines types of statues/tealight holders/charms.
My antique 190something antique Gypsy Witch deck.

I totally get this!!!! From watching and just loving the content from Sacred Seed (I wondered, too, what had happened) - to the "feeding frenzy" of buying so many decks. I have been collecting tarot madly since arouind 2000; however, back in 1969 I had only one deck, which I kept but did not read from. Catholic background notwithsanding - 30 years later, I was "bitten" and probably have hundreds of decks and books, not only on Tarot, but the Occult (my first read was THE OCCULT by Colin Wilson back in 1971.) I was 21 and had walked away from "the church". Fast forward to my 50th birthday in 2000 - The Crone - she come to my house, and she stay. I have not reached the point of declutter, but I do give away decks that I have doubles on to people I know would love them, and they do. These decks are being re-homed in my community, slowly. I envy your life experience with reading cards - that is SOO Solid! I never diss "fortune tellers" or Diviners of any and all stripes - we need you as a base line for human spiritual culture that reaches into the unseen BECAUSE it is what births what we call "the known". I feel confident when I read for myself or for those few, close friends who ask - in Diviner mode. I also love the art, whimsy, knowledge and questions engenered by "all those hundreds of decks" - the Spiritual - the Psychological - the Alchemical change that HAPPENS when you open the door to "the other" - the unseen and let them know that they have value in your life and IN LIFE. Tarot is so many doors - each deck that I have chosen brings me something but most of all JOY and a TIME OUT from the challenges this world brings. Mary-Grace - the only reason I have to turn down the noise of so many decks and apply the purchasing brakes, is that I am running out of room in my house. When I cannot remember WHERE a most recent purchased deck is - I know I am in trouble - and am I EVER in trouble NOW - So, I cannot say I will STOP buying decks. I can only hope just that I will slow down. I will most definitely check in with you once in awhile, though. BRAVA!!!!! Love your content:-).

I have to say At the time of your og video I was in a weird space having collected literally over 100 decks and culled almost everything. Your video was pretty affirming that I was not alone. Best thing I ever did was back to basics just a few decks. I let everything else go. Not long after I got sick of the “selling” of a lifestyle , the push of an aesthetic to achieve authenticity. I really do appreciate genuine content but I think it’s rare.

Watching these videos it's occurring to me that I was a more confident tarot reader when I only had a few decks that I worked with for months at a time before being a new one. I like my collection but I think swapping it the deck I'm using every week is actually making me less confident as a reader... Maybe I should focus on using one or two for a longer period instead of trying to use different ones all the time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ anyway. You're giving me things to think about.

I’ve noticed the infomercializing of tarotube too and It bugs me, especially the lack of transparency around it, although it’s obvious when several channels all have the deck.
I’m not aware of the pay structure TH-cam has, but I have heard it’s not as generous as it used to be, and many have or are trying to monetize less commercial tarot content by moving to paid subscription.

I started watching TarotTube in 2016 and it was noticeably different from now. Tarot channels appeared to focus much more on reading tarot and discussions of different systems. Sacred Seed was/is a great example (she hasn't posted since 2018). The shift towards unboxing videos and reviews really accelerated in 2018.
I've also unsubscribed from almost all Tarot channels except this one; Tom Benjamin; Astral Lady Tarot and James Feeney. They all cover a variety of tarot topics.

I went back in time and listened to several of your older videos. Learned about this. Thanks. I am a new viewer by the way.

Hello, i totally agree with you!! I recently had the reflexion about tarot tube: ok nice to see different decks but how do you actual use them? it’s all fluff and BS! i would love if you would do a deep dive into the meanings of the cards and richness of the symbologies…love from Montreal😉

Tarot reading should be fun and alot of these channels have just sucked the life and soul out of tarot... its like they have a toy but don't know what to do with it! I wanted to start a channel myself but on using the cards I am not interested showing off new decks or my personal collection.. I wanted to show what tarot can do. There's a channel I watch and she is such a lovely lady...I think she puts more content up on Facebook now rather than TH-cam but yeah she does things like murder mysteries, missing persons...and all that kind of thing... now your telling me flipping through a pack of 78 cards is more interesting than that??? I really have to question if these people actually do tarot or if so without the crutch of a useless guidebook. The lady I watch and like is Melanie France and I think she's called tarot medium on TH-cam. I'm sure you can find her guys if you want to check her out. She's the only channel I don't roll my eyes at watching!!!
