With some companies and albums, the photobooks are too similar and it’s not worth collecting. BigHit is good in a way that these days all their versions are very different. JYP often has too many similar versions of the same album.

    • @stygiandoll
      @stygiandoll 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

The way JYPE handled the Got7 albums by having multiple versions with blind covers was one of the major reasons why I stopped buying their albums. It became stressful to buy something without knowing what you'll end up with. (I wasn't also feeling their latest comebacks except YCMN & NBTM).
Skz's Cle series were also a bit disappointing photobook-wise but they're my ults so I do collect every version, and I seriously hope they won't go the Got7 route with their albums, but knowing JYPE, they eventually will... There's nothing I despise more than blind covers with member specific photobooks.

    • @sophiak.8369
      @sophiak.8369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Completely agree. Starship also does one concept per version. And SM seems to typically do that too (at least by what I've seen from EXO and NCT books, it seems that way). I really dislike how JYP mixes photos from the same concepts in many books. I personally love when there is one concept per book.

i collect ( i use that word lightly since i can only get one ver of albums) groups Carolyn or Katie or Eva or Randy, Kevin, etc. don't collect but id never get mad at them for it because there's other youtubers i follow who do.
and if they drop it, there's always another person or even a company that will unbox it
Carolyn idk if this'll bring comfort to you but there are companies who unbox the day it drops. but i still watch you and all the rest of the community unbox it because i love hearing your reactions and seeing your pulls. don't feel pressured to pay heaps of money to get it shipped within the day or be up all night editing to be the first to unbox it bcz ill watch no matter what! do what makes u happy :)

I only got into collecting about a year ago, but downsizing my collection has been something I have been thinking about for a while honestly. When I first started collecting it felt like i needed a album from all of my favorite groups. I felt this constant pressure to get all the versions of albums and i was so worried about how "far behind" I was with older albums and such. It almost started to feel like it was impossible to ever be happy with my collection, because I just kept comparing myself to others. Lately, I have been finding joy in collecting again however, after I started being more picky with what I buy. Seeing videos like these really help and I'm so thankful for you for making this video, because it makes me feel better about even thinking of downsizing and motivates me further to sell parts of my collection

I'm so glad you're talking about this! No one should feel pressured to collect certain groups and buy everything they come out with. One thing I don't like is that I feel people think either you have to buy(collect) EVERYTHING a group releases, or buy nothing. I'm sad it's not more normal to just buy a group's album once in a while, and make that be normal. (At least from what i've witnessed, i could be wrong)
And I'm sad you felt like your collection was 'bad' if you missed an album or two, cause that's not true! You and everyone else should just buy the albums they want, and sell the albums they want to sell and so on! I'm excited to see how and who you will collect from now on! Keep up the good work!😁

I'm honestly really happy that you're addressing this issue because I also wanted to downsize my collection! I always felt pressured trying to collect every single version of a group. It got to the point, that I would buy each version of a album even if I didn't like the concept just to have a complete collection.
I feel like companies are honestly going overboard with the amount of versions and repackages that it's not even rewarding. I really miss the days when kpop albums only had 1 or 2 versions...

For personal reasons I couldn’t keep up with the k-collector community for a few months and after I came back I noticed so many collectors I loved I couldn’t keep watching anymore. I couldn’t really put my finger on why watching them kinda irritated me in a way but then I understood that it’s because I didn’t see what I loved and followed them for, which was genuine joy and satisfaction in getting new stuff that they were searching for. I honestly don’t come to your channel or other’s channel to see a big or small collection, at the end of the day it’s your money and I don’t really care about that, it’s the people I come for?? I don’t know how to explain it. Sometimes I didn’t even WATCH the videos, I used them as podcasts, I didn’t even care if it was a group I didn’t know.
I noticed many started to collect groups that they don’t even know the basic knowledge of and there was no reaction anymore, if it was a video with non-live commentary I wouldn’t even notice. I personally watch because I like seeing people be happy with what they like and accomplish. For that reason I found myself coming back to watch like 3 channels max now, when I watched religiously around 15 channels before. You’re one of the 3 channels I keep coming back to, you have a good middle ground between what you want and the feedback you receive from us and I really like that.
I have no idea how to finish this, sorry for the rant haha this is something I’ve been thinking about for a while now. I hope you’ll continue doing what you like :)

It’s your collections, your money and your choices. You don’t have to collect a group to prove you love the group and support them. What matters is that you are happy collecting what you collect and you do it because you want to, not because you feel you have to.

I have been a kpop collector for years now and it's so strange to me but also kind of cool that we all have been coming to this same decision recently. I'm the type that feels like I have to buy everything for all the groups I like but I realized about 2 months ago that it just isn't doable anymore. I decided to downsize and I use the "quality over quantity" mindset and I've become so much happier since then. I know it's not an easy decision to make, but as someone who has watched your videos for years now I'm really proud of us for doing this. I hope the best for you and for your collection 💕

Interests change over time and there is no use in holding onto things you don't enjoy anymore(something I'm working on still...). It's totally valid to drop a part of your collection to focus more on what you really want. I finally decided a few days ago to sell my remaining BTS albums. I stopped collecting their new releases in 2016 and haven't played those CDs in ages. It doesn't mean that I don't support the boys still, but I'm just not enjoying the music as much as I used to and there is no use in me keeping them.
I'm happy that "influencers"(did that on purpose^^) like you talk about these things:)
All the best for your collection💙

This is my take on collecting. My ult group is Shinee, but the thing is, while I would want a full collection of them, for some reason, it's not... As fun collecting super old stuff as new stuff? Even though they are my ultimate group, I came into kpop late (like, a year ago) and it's not fun backtracking for me. My current collection is quite messy, and I don't mind it, because I feel like I collect in a whole other way. The albums I buy are not determined by the music for me, it's the art, the photos and the concepts. I have purely bought albums, for the concept, while I don't personally listen to them as much. Two examples are EXO (I do have some of their songs on my playlist and follow them) and TXT (same there). I bought Exo Obsession (the X-Exo version) simply because I loved the outfits, the design, and the pictures. I also bought the TXT Album - The Dream Chapter : Magic (Sanctuary ver) because of the photos in it. I also want to get the newest TXT album for this reason (the white one I believe I liked the most). This comment is too long, anyway, does anyone else collect albums this way? Like I want an album I will get back to and look at the pictures rather than for the music album in it itself because you can always listen to the music elsewhere! Loved the video though, very good thoughts!

      @Starxburst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I’m the exact same way!! I’m a multifan so it’s really hard to decide which albums to buy sometimes but I’ve settled on only buying albums I want from whichever group. For example, bts was the first group I got into and Nct is my ult group rn but i don’t necessarily want to backtrack all the way to their debut and buy all of the albums that came out cause it feels more like a chore rather than just collecting it because I like it. So even if I Stan the group, i might not buy an album just cause it’s not my fav release, but I still support them 100%. Like I recently got into Mcnd and I bought they’re debut album cause I loved the concept, and all of the items that the album came with. Even if they’re not one of my top groups. I do think there’s also a fun aspect to looking for limited merchandise and albums though. Basically, I don’t think it should be so uniform and stressful. If you like the album and want to buy it for whatever reason, and can afford it, why not? But don’t feel pressured to buy anything from other people’s collections. And just be happy to support the artist and have a nice lookin album!

i totally understand how you feel.. being a multi stan is hard, especially when you're a collector as well. i have been collecting for years now too and over the years, it seems like collectors are "competing" each other with huge collections, so it made me felt like i need to get everything because I'm collecting them, not because i genuinely want them. I have also gone through massive downsizing earlier this year, after spending months last year trying to decide because some of the groups that i have decide to let go of are groups that i have been collecting for a long time, or that i feel that people would judge me for mass selling items from these groups. what made me finally get my decision firm was similar to yours and it's that it's my collection that we are dealing with, my life that I'm dealing with and not others. although it's pretty sad that I'm letting go of my "once really prioritised / loved" collections, it definitely made me feel better about being able to concentrate even more on my ults that i collect, and it was easier to focus on them since i don't have to think about so many different groups. i have been a subscriber of yours for quite a while now and i always enjoy your videos, i hope your decision will make you feel much happier like how mine did. 💕

I have not gone through all the comments but I just wanna say I kind of find it ridiculous that people make up rules for the whole community to follow. Friends the only rule is there are no rules. You do you and let others do them. That's.. literally it?? I really hope this toxic tendency stops soon. I enjoy being able to tell a difference between two unboxing/collection channels just because each collector has their own style. Like man that video where Katie (shawolzenl) made a disclaimer about not sleeving her cards??? Who even cares it's HER collection so she might as well throw them as a pile under her bed if that's what she likes. Jeez.

I spent a while reading the comments and its so nice to see that everyone decides to just be happy with their collection instead of pressuring themselves ^-^
For me i never bought multiple versions from the start. (became a kpop fan in 2012 and started buying albums in 2013). At first i only bought albums of SHINee (my ults), Infinite and B.A.P. I kind of felt the pressure to get every album (not multiple versions but every title track) but as you may now they didnt really release any multiple versions (aside from SHINee sometimes releasing two versions) so for a while it has been really easy for me XD
When i started buying other groups too it helped me that i actually listen to the CDs on my CD-Player. I was like: I dont need the same CD multiple times, so why would i buy more than one version? (it was also helpful that i decided not to buy any japanese albums (because jewel cases are as expensive as photobook for korean albums and if you want more than a jewel case you had to pay double) because shinee is my ult group in buy their japanese albums but only from them. its like you said, i want to spend the most money on my top1 faves ^-^)
I always waited for unboxings (so i thank every unboxer out there) and decided on which version i like the best. The outcome: Im really really happy with my albums and dont have as much as other people that got into Kpop even years after me. From a lot of groups i have one to three albums, my favourites because im like: I just want to have at least one album from them or this title track because its so good. I dont need more.
So i thought about slowing down in buying albums (even though i already dont buy much) and even thought about selling some. What made me happy is that i found only like 5 albums id like to sell. I got the feeling that i really thought about what to buy (not having much money helps ;) and made good decisions.
I only want to sell the newest Monsta X albums i have (are you there, we are here ...) because l bought them even though i didnt really like their title tracks but my collection had been complete to this point and i didnt want to stop. when my bias wonho left i decided to stop and without the pressure now i think i dont need the two or three. and i want so sell shinee story of light ep. 1-3 because when i bought them i didnt know there would be the epilogue with all songs together XD for shinee only i buy "originals" and their repackages, but the story of light are somehwat similar XD
ah i rarely comment on youtube but i liked reading the discussions here so i did this text myself o.o thank your for reading (if you reached the end) XD

Honestly this year has just been me downsizing everything, so I feel ya! In the beginning it was really hard, because my mind was like "but you love this group". However, when I finally came to terms with the fact that I can love a group without collecting their stuff it made my life so much easier.
Downsizing random collections has given me a lot more time and money to focus on filling in holes in my top ults' collections (my Block B collection is looking way sexier rn, oof). I'm really happy that a lot of people in the collection community is talking about this subject tho, because these videos helped me come to terms with the fact that it's okay to downsize, so thank you for your video ^^

I feel you about downsizing your collection. I had to drop some of my favorite groups since I wasn't feeling their latest comebacks. But I also had the thought "my collection will be incomplete and it's going to drive me crazy", so I kept buying a few more albums and then finally I decided I should just stop spending money on something that doesn't make me happy anymore, and that was the best decision I made for myself. I don't make videos so it was an easier choice for me to make, but I understand how you felt like you'd "disappoint" some people by not collecting a certain group anymore. I'm glad you decided the best for yourself, and do what you want to do. I just wanted to tell you that the painstaking thought process of downsizing a collection is a common thing among collectors, and I totally support anyone who decides to stop collecting certain groups. As you said, it's your money, you should be able to do whatever you want to do without anyone passing their judgement on your decisions.
I'm so happy to hear that you want to collect SF9, such an amazing group! Same with The Boyz. I've been collecting SF9 for a long time and I feel really really happy whenever I flip through one of their albums while listening to them. I started collecting The Boyz as well but I promised myself to just buy one version of each album.
Too much rambling, I'm ending this by saying I feel happy on your behalf. Good luck on collecting new groups. :)

I just felt the urge to share my collecting habits and rules for anyone out there who might be struggling with this. I know everyone has their own ways of collecting, but I figured I could just share mine because I find it does help me to both collect responsibly as well as appreciate what I have more.
For me, since I know I can (and probably will) go overboard with collecting certain things, I have rules for myself when it comes to collecting Kpop albums, photocards, lightsticks, and concert goods.
~First off, for photocards, I must own the album or have at least purchased the album in order to have them. If they are special cards, for example tour cards, I must have gone to or have a ticket to said event to collect them. This rule does not apply to gifted cards or items as some people just like to give me my bias's cards or other goodies regardless of if I have the album/DVD/product or attended the event.
~For my number 1 ult group (BTS) I collect all versions of all Korean albums and I allow myself to collect OT7 for the photocards. If I can find a Japanese album for cheap, sometimes I allow myself to get it. For ALL other male groups, even other ones that I ult, I have to pick 1 version from each album that I want to collect. For me, K-Pop is always about the music first, so if I don't like the music, I don't buy the album. Period. I collect either only my bias's cards or a mixture of members, but the rule is only one card for each type that I pull, so if I don't pull my bias and want them, I have to trade for it (or buy/sell). For female groups, the same rules apply, though I collect all versions for Dreamcatcher and (G)-Idle since they are currently tied for me and the photocard rules for them are only one each, again. I only allow myself OT7 for one group.
~For lightsticks, I must either be seeing a group live or planning to do so in the near future to buy their lightstick. My only exception to this rule so far has been Lightiny because ATEEZ is not touring anywhere near me, so I bought one to support them, regardless. Also, even if I'm going to see a group, I have to actually LIKE the lightstick to buy it, otherwise, what's the point?
~For concert/event merchandise, I have to be going to the actual concert or event, myself. If I don't go, or my friend didn't go/gift me something, I don't need a souvenir.
I don't know if this will help anyone, but I just figured I'd share since I'm pretty strict but very happy with my collection.
And I don't know who needs to hear this, but you do not have to love/buy/be hype about the same things or groups as everyone else. Do not pressure yourself into caring more than you do. If you don't love a group enough to buy their albums, that's perfectly ok. If you like a group for its music more than for its members and still want to collect, that's more than ok, too. And please do not pressure others. It poisons the hobby and takes the fun and joy out of it.
    Happy collecting/downsizing! Stay safe!

Hi, I’m glad we started to talk about this.
First I wanna clear up the “pressure” thing. It’s not like any of the people you talk to, keep talking you into liking a group. It’s more like, well everyone seems to like them, kind of feeling. So it’s a totally unintentional pressure. It’s no-one’s fault. And I did find groups like this which I love and wouldn’t sell while downsizing my collection. See Infinite ❤️

personally, i throughoutly collect only ONE member of ONE group. sometimes i buy albums of other groups if i enjoy them, but i either keep my pull or trade it to my fave member if i have an opportunity. i have no idea how people like you and Katy have these huge and very full collections of like ALL members of several groups + single members of a bunch of other groups and i see a lot of new ppl in kpop having mindset of like "if i like a group i must collect every member!!! and buy every album!!" and they get really sad when their collections are not as big as of some youtubers and stuff. so i think you doing this video and explanation is a really good thing for everyone to remember that you must enjoy what you do first and you don't have to feel obliged to buy things you don't care abt if some youtubers have it. so if you enjoy a bunch of groups it's awesome but maybe collecting all of them is not a wise decision and will bring you more stress than happiness

I think it's good that youtubers have started to talk about this, K-pop collecting can be a pretty expensive hobby and it almost seems unreasonable for people to expect those who make unboxings to collect so many different groups. I also completely understand wanting to have a full collection for everyone that you collect. Since I am a Loona collector, I have learned the hard way that this is not always possible since I cannot justify spending $1000+ on the four limited albums I am missing. I really only collect photocards for my top 4-5 groups and I may buy albums for a few other groups but not all versions, I have dropped my collections for some groups to be able to afford different ones. I guess my whole point is that I agree with what you said and that sometimes it just is not physically possible to have full collections for some groups without sacrificing more money than you would like to.

I feel like i'm traveling in the exact opposite direction. I used to only buy one version of each album because I knew I couldn't afford multiple versions. But I found that if I bought albums 2nd hand I could get a lot for really cheap and the only thing missing is pcs. But I respect anyone who is able to downsize their collection because I definitely don't have the strength to sell or give away any of my albums.

I'm still very much in the beginning of my collecting journey and at least once a day I reimagine my collection plans. Which groups to start collecting which I'm still going to listen to but don't feel like collecting their albums as I just know too many groups would come before them on a priority list. At the end of the day it's not just about the money but also being happy with what you end up with at the end of the day.
I'm really happy that you decided to talk about it because it means you had a chance to sit with this decision and that you're not going to let other people or your expectations of other people's thoughts and desires determine anything about a hobby that os entirely up to you.
I found your channel very early into my discovery of kpop and I felt less outlandish for this hobby thanks to you but I mostly watch your videos to hear your thoughts and "hang out" :) and I think a lot of people just want to hear other people share their passion.
It should be normalized to change your collection, change your favorites, change your priorities. Not collecting something doesn't equal hate.

album collecting is definitely one of those things where i had to make rash decisions and "try" things out before coming to a solid standpoint on what i want and where i want the collection to go. right at the start i would just buy albums if i liked the music enough and thought it was worth it but as i came round to stanning more than one group and my collection was going beyond more than one discography, i naturally had the mindset that i was going to have to complete all these collections. now as time has gone on and groups have come and gone through my stan list, i've only really just had the conversation with myself about which groups i wanna collect and whether i want to hold onto albums i already own or sell them. i can only imagine the sort of unnecessary pressure youtube collectors go through because of their choice to publicise their collections.

I feel you on the pressure to have big collections tbh Locally I was part of a collecting group and it became really toxic to the point where they kind of gaslighted you into buying everything or you weren't a true collector. I always got comments about how I was missing x or y pc from an idol and it made me develop the same mindset that it has to be 100% or it doesn't count. Quarantine has done wonders for our headspaces tbh I feel more comfortable with having incomplete collections and not buying everything from every idol/group I like. I put some new rules for my collections and I feel renovated to restart collecting next year. I am glad you feel better and remember your money your decisions!

Honestly I'm relieved that this is a discussion. I have a big collection by now (been into kpop for 10 years), and had to set rules right from the start to not get overboard (otherwise I don't know where to stop lmao). I was starting to feel disconnection between the various channels I follow and my collection. For example I might wait months before buying a specific release just to be sure there isn't a repackage, always get one version of one release, track down how much I spend in a month to spread spendings, etc (except for my ults, no rules for them). That we're getting more collectors with the kind of specific rules you mentioned, or changing collections, etc feels great because I relate more, somehow? It's closer to my experience. Thank you for talking about it :)
As for your videos, I actually don't follow the same groups as you (except girl groups and Woollim groups) and yet I watch your Monsta X or boy groups unboxings because I like your reactions and seeing you happy about your pulls and talking about it. So I never care about you unboxing weeks after the release. It's still a fun moment :)

You do you, I think it's completely fair to feel the way you feel. I totally understand and agree that if a group or album doesn't make you happy and excited then you shouldn't feel pressured to still buy it and support the group. At the end of the day collecting and listening to kpop should be fun and enjoyable. You did inspired me to collect photocards of only my bias from my fave groups, otherwise I would've felt overwhelmed by it and I wouldn't have enjoyed collecting as much as I do now.

I just got done watching Zafer7love’s video and had to come back to comment on yours (I watched it earlier). I have been thinking about this exact thing for the past week and was looking for a video like this. I saw your notification and got so excited. I’ve been really struggling with dealing with pressure from friends to stan and collect other groups. I don’t have a YT video but I definitely get the feeling of not really wanting an album that much but getting it to please others. Not that I don’t love the other groups. I just don’t love them enough to collect them. There are a few groups that I was really pressured into and honestly I feel like I don’t like them as much as I would have if I’d discovered them myself and just taken it slowly.
Also there are some groups I LOVE but would never collect just because I know myself. I know I’ll want all the versions and all the photocards, and it wouldn’t be financially smart to collect them (though if they had a concert I’d 100% be there). I feel like Seventeen is one for me. They have so many albums and photocards at this point and I love them to death (I saw them in January and it was one of THE BEST) concerts I’ve ever been too. Total clowns and so talented but I just wouldn’t collect them.
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and really want to consolidate my collection to just my ults. After that I MIGHT get other groups but I honestly doubt it.
Anyways sorry I know this message was so rambly and long, but I wanted to say thank you for talking about this. It has really inspired me to tell my friends how I feel and stand up for myself more about when I don’t want to stan/collect a group like they do.

Thank you so much for making this video. I've been feeling this way for a long time now, and I think it's part of the reason I kind of retreated from collecting albums/photocards/kpop in general for a good while (and only really tried to keep up with my ult bias groups). It's felt especially overwhelming as bc I haven't been collecting recently, it's made me feel like I have so much to catch up on. I've recently gotten more out of my slump, and my love for kpop has kind of been reignited again, but it's also got me questioning how and what to downsize, which is something I've always avoided thinking about bc I have a very hard time letting go of things. I'm a collector at heart, and like you mentioned, not having all the albums for a certain group always makes me feel incomplete/unsettled in some way...even though realistically I know that with the amount of groups and multiple versions of albums, I'll never be able to keep up with every group I love. It's a hard balance, but it's def a conversation that I feel is very relevant for the kpop collecting community today, and I just want to say that this video has inspired me to actually get up and start really trying to figure out where I should go in terms of downsizing, and how I might need to start being more selective over the albums/photocards I buy and collect

I hope people understand that unboxing youtubers don't have to buy things they don't want it. And it's ok.

I've felt this way too recently! There's a certain group who i used to collect, they had a couple comebacks that I was kinda meh about and so didn't get the albums and although I still love the members, I just don't feel like collecting them any more,I debated just getting their older albums but then they had a recent comeback that I did like and it just felt a bit all over the place so I'm just keeping the albums that are member specific for my bias instead. I have quite a few random albums from random groups where I liked the title song and then never got any of their other albums, and I'd much rather just support my top couple of groups thoroughly than have a bunch of half finished collections, especially when all the songs are online and I just don't have enough space.

Like you I've been a fan for over 10 years, I used to be a fan of so many groups so I would buy all of their albums but stopped once I got busier and became more of a casual fan. When I got back into it, most of my groups were inactive or like not a group I wanted to support anymore. So I only collected 3 groups and then added a 4th but recently 2 of those groups became really hard to collect and it was kinda overwhelming so I dropped them to focus on my very top 2.

    Hi Caroline!
I just wanted to say I know exactly how you feel.
You were the one that actually influenced me to start my unboxing channel back then!
I never realize how much of an impulsive buyer I was until I moved to a different city for university.
Ever since then I slowly stopped buying multiple versions of albums as well, fast forward to a few years later I recently decided to put a lot of my old albums and cards for sale.
It was hard for me and I stopped being as active a few years back so I can't imagine how you'd feel with your channel coming so far and being known for your collections.
As a fellow collector(?) I feel like in some ways we all get attached to our collections no matter how much time has passed or no matter how less interested we are in that collection. I don't know...it's kind of hard to explain...😅
Anyways, to hear someone say it in words like this makes me feel a lot better and honestly less guilty!
So thank you! I really enjoy your videos!

I totally understand where you’re coming from. For a while I considered collecting each of my biases for my top 10 groups, but I’m about to start college and that’s just not realistic for me. I eventually settled for my top three, but considering my ult is Jimin from BTS it was still a lot of money for me. Right now I’ve settled for having my favorite pcs and some merch only for him because I simply cannot afford my other two ults, Jonghyun from SHINee and IU (whose photocards mostly consist on expensive and rare merch). I genuinely hope the kpop community stops feeling like they have a say on others collections, sometimes people don’t have the money or just don’t want to do it anymore. Also, especially nowadays depending on only one unboxer for ALL comebacks seems ridiculous to me.

I kinda feel grateful that you film this video, coz collecting albums is still mainstream in fandom/community so sometimes I feel pressured after I decided to stop collecting...
I used to collect every version photobooks from my favourite groups, but I set a goal this year to not buy any albums anymore because I realized how much I spent on this and it doesn't make my happy anymore, I just feel like I'm obligated to buy albums for every comeback, in fact I don't touch the albums at all after unboxing them... I don't even feel excited to unbox... So this year I decided to set this as my new year resolution which I glad I did, since corona make me start worrying about financial stability
I'm not sure if I will sell my collection but for now I just want to keep them as it is

I've been really struggling with how to go forward with my collection bc i'm also a multistan and i feel like in the kpop community there is this idea of you having to buy and collect albums and pcs of every group you stan for you to be a "real stan," and it can be really stressful. I had to decide whether i wanted to continue collecting my ults thoroughly or if I wanted to start buying/continue buying albums for other fave groups. It's really tough for me but i've decided to continue collecting my ults thoroughly, but also if there is an album here or there that i just really want, i'll buy it. In the end I had to ask myself what makes me happiest, and am i really happy if i get this or is it bc i feel like I have to? I think everyone just needs to do what makes them happy. Regardless of what others collect or how they collect, do what you want.

I get what you meant when you said a collection feels incomplete because I feel like that with Loona, dreamcatcher and bts. Like I want loona albums, but there’s a lot of them and I don’t have the money. And with bts, I wanna get more of there albums but I wanna focus on my gg collection. With dreamcatcher, my collection (aitc, eon and dystopia) feels incomplete and I recently bought raid of dream so I’ll be caught up on Korean releases. I don’t focus on there Japanese releases, but I have a what Japanese album. I feel like there’s this standard in the kpop community where if you don’t have kpop albums/merch you aren’t a fan but that isn’t true at all. I also have some groups like gwsn, clc and oh my girl that I casually Stan and I don’t feel any pressure to collect them.

i recently had the same experience! i collected so many of my biases but i was overwhelming myself by trying so hard to collect so many groups bc i felt like if i didnt collect them i wasnt supporting them but thats totally not the case. i used to collect so many groups and now ive cut down my collection to 4 of my ults and thats allowed me to not stress so much about having a new comeback to buy every other week and ive been able to invest more money into my ults and as a result of that ive been able to collect them thoroughly and now i feel soooo much more satisfied. my collect isnt half finished all the time and im not constantly stressing about all these new comebacks. i definitely recommend downsizing ur collection if its making you unhappy, its so fulfilling!

I must say I'm happy you and other youtubers are thinking about your Kpop collections. I feel like sometimes this community gives us an urge to keep up with everything and that can be so stressful and let's be honest: we collect to have fun not to get another pressure in our lives. Recently, when I decided to collect photocards, I decided to get a binder and create place holders like everyone else. After a little bit I noticed that I had a lot more place holders than cards and that made me focus at what I didn't have rather than cherish the photo cards I owned. So I took off the place holders. Not saying anyone should do that, just trying to say that we all should find what makes us happy as collectors or as kpop enthusiasts.

yes!! this is an important topic when collecting 🥺 i only collect bts, shinee and lucas so i can have more items and complete collection over loads of incomplete ones from my other faves, i know i wont ever want to change this line up since they spark me the most joy so it makes me really happy collecting:))

Ugh, I'm so sorry that you've felt pressured into keeping albums. It's your money, your shelves, your space, do your thing!
So you don't feel too overwhelmed you could just post one group's collection every week or so? Idk but good luck with the downsizing and I will keep an eye out 💖

i’m not a collector but i use this phrase whenever i have to read out my clothes and stuff. if it makes u happy keep it + if it doesn’t bring u any joy give it a new home. which i feel like when it comes to downsizing collections could be helpful too

I downsized my collection because I want to prioritize my favorites groups and I don’t see the point of having collections of groups that I don’t stan as much as I used to.

I wish I could give you more than one like on this video! I love how you're very real about your feelings and tbh it's something that's been on my mind also. My ult is BTS and I've been an army since 2014. When I first got into them, I would enjoy purchasing their albums (depending if I'm a fan of their cb, is if I would buy it; I was also in college at the time, so I had to watch what I spent). But lately in the BTS community, I've seen ppl being competitive with the BTS merch they purchase, and it honestly pressures me into buying those items also. There are times when buying items don't give me joy anymore, then I see some armys spending hundreds of money on this other merch and my immediate thought is 'if i don't buy it, does that make me less of an army?' Honestly, there are still some purchases that give me joy, but at the end of the day, I always think 'did i really need this?'
I just want to thank you so much for this video, because thats exactly whats been on my mind. I recently graduated from grad school, but because of this pandemic, it's been hard to finding a job. In order for me to get money to purchase my fave's memberships and albums during their comebacks, I need a job or at the moment I'm trying to resell some items that don't give me joy :(
    Stay safe!

I haven’t ever felt the pressure like you or others have talked about recently when it involves Kpop albums. Photocard collecting is the only time I felt pressed but that was my own doing and no one else’s. My collection is at the best place it’s probably been. I don’t think there’s any rules besides the rules you set for yourself :) And even if those rules change that’s totally fine. This hobby should not be stressful and if it does become that way it’s best to take a break for a bit. I have noticed a lot of changes throughout these couple of years that make me side-eye things. I do think ever since Korean unboxers appeared more on TH-cam, who of course are the fastest in unboxing an album, that’s when I noticed some people start ordering their albums with faster shipping to try and be the first ones to do a video. I may be wrong but that’s my assumption. Anyways, I understand why you talked about this :) Also thanks for mentioning me! I don’t really feel part of the Kpop TH-cam community anymore but you mentioning me is appreciated, Carolyn :) Stay safe and take care!

I´ve been collecting for around two years now and I was always so impressed when people had these huge collections and thought to myself that I want that as well. So I bought some albums that I don't really love anymore now but impose bought back then because I thought well others are collecting this group I should too. after watching this I went through my folder to see what groups I really want to collect and now I want to really focus on my ult instead of having a bunch of lonely albums that will never get buddies since I don't want to collect that group. Thank you so much for this video and for making me realize that even with collecting albums it's quality over quantity. id much rather have a shelf half full with albums that I really love instead of too full of albums that don´t really mean that much to me anymore:)

I really appreciate that you came to say that you want to do this because it’s your collection after all. And I exactly know how you feel. Cause before I had somehow the same feeling. Back then in 2009 when I first get to know Kpop I kinda wanted to watch a lot of groups MVs Variety shows and etc . Little by little I got less interested in groups . The changes in kpop were not my favorite anymore. After almost 8 years I stopped following the news not only on kpop but also on my favorite group Super Junior. Now I am kinda back but only for SuJu . I think they have become part of my life now and I don’t think I can stop following their activities anytime soon even though I can’t support them just like you do. but not any other groups is like that for me I even tried to know some groups more again but nothing happened. So I guess it is completely normal to stop following

I feel you. Also I know what you mean about pressure to collect everything :/ but for me I’ve decided to limit my self to three bgs and three ggs and then everyone else I’ll let myself get one or two of albums from them live my fav albums, but that’s it. For example, I stan oneus but I don’t collect them but I decided to buy their a song written easily album but I don’t have any plans to go back and collect their older albums or collect them in the future. I’ve also recently decided to downsize my collection bts being one of those groups but I’m still keeping my fav albums

Hi! This is the very first comment that I have decided to leave on any of your videos and I have to say it - THANK YOU for this video.
Believe it or not, I have been thinking about downsizing my collection as well - I do have over 1400 CDs now after almost 12 years of collecting, both J-Pop and K-Pop. This kind of hobby is expensive (especially with CDs from Japan) and very time-consuming, but I'm very proud of everything I got thanks to my determination and commitment.
However, I have been feeling a little off about collecting lately. With all the new CDs arriving at my door day by day, I wasn't sure if I'm still able to keep going. Thanks to you, I finally decided to let go some of the stuff, so that I could think about my hobby in a fresh way again. Knowing there are people like me, who buy CDs but sometimes aren't sure about the direction in which their collections are going, makes me feel just like a human being again.
Thank you so much. I want to downsize my collection now and catch on with some of the artists, whose CDs I still lack. I hope to watch more of your videos in the near future. I wish you the best of luck!

I fully support you (not that you need my approval or sumn) but even for me that I collect only two groups (Loona&RV, and Taeyeon) sometimes I look at my collection and feel like somethings just don't belong or I'm not happy with, so I couldn't imagine how hard it must've been for you 💖 but yeah I totally understand stand your point of completing a collection and I also feel like that it's more like the companies forcing us into having everything but I just bought 6 copies of I&S so what can I say...

It's nice seeing older K-Pop fans/collectors still active to this day. I myself had started collecting albums in 2011, but stopped in 2013 to 2019 because university was so expensive and finding a job after graduation was hard. After life settled down and I got a stable job (Yay!) I discovered a K-Pop store last year on my way home. It rekindled my love for collecting again.
It's been so long and my feelings for some of the albums and groups I collected prior 2019 has changed. I don't hate these groups, they've brought me so much joy and memories, but things change and you change which is totally normal. It's comforting for someone else saying these things.
There's nothing wrong with selling albums and changing your collection, especially when you've been doing this for a decade. Things change, people change, it's totally normal.
I like the idea of having a thorough collection vs a huge collection. As a TVXQ fan, I don't think that will be happening anytime soon. However, as a Carat... I just completed their Korean discography after deciding to just full on dive into the Diamond Life last year.

I've been thinking about this recently too. For one of the groups I collect I have a complete collection which I'm proud of and have worked really hard towards, but recently I havent been that into the group and collecting their albums feels more like a chore than something to look forward to. Of course I still love the group, I think I've maybe just moved on to loving other groups more, and wanting to put my money elsewhere. Its been hard for me to come to a decision because there are some items in that collection that are meaningful and have special memories, but I'm the kind of person that is all or nothing when it comes to collecting. For now I just push the downsizing thought away 😂😂

Wow. I'm speechless. First off: I think we are around the same age and we both started getting into kpop at the same age, thats funny. :D
And in the past days/weeks I've been going through the exact same thoughts and I've come to the same conclusions.
Your video sums up everything so well. Thank you for this ♥

I am trying to stick to specific groups, but it is so hard. I see other newer groups that I like and want to support because I just have that feeling that they are going to go far and be really good, which has happened with some groups, like Verivery.
My ultimate group is SF9 and I have almost everything they have put out (including their Japanese and Taiwanese releases), so I love the idea that you still want to collect them. They are so worth it.
But I have decided to downsize some collections too, like AB6IX and a few others. I just haven't gotten into those groups like I thought I would.
    Good luck with your downsizing.

i know this is a super old video but i just went searching for videos about downsizing to justify my own downsizing and found yours (and you're one of my fav kpop youtubers who i've been subbed to for awhile so ofc i clicked this one!) i relate soooo much to the "can't do something casually" and "my collection isn't complete without everything" sentiments. i've recently realized that i can't afford collecting all of my groups anymore, to the extent that makes me happy, so i'm just collecting my ult group's albums and ult bias' pcs (which is bts so kpop is still going to make me broke but it's fine!). it was a very hard decision and i had a few mental breakdowns over it lol but i'm glad to know all collectors kind of go through the same thing. thanks for this video Carolyn!!
