This goes way beyond the 9 realms. You're now entering the entire known and unknown universe. Thor and his group are just an extremely small portion of that.
“Have to get the thing from the thing before the thing happens” I’ve never heard something described so articulately and elegantly before. You truly have a way with words.
You asked how they shot this movie, but any time you see Rocket, it is the second in command to Yondu, who is James Gunn's brother Sean. He wore a green screen suit and acted every scene for the camera. The main Nova guy other than John C. Reilly is Peter Serafinowicz, who was in Shaun of the Dead.
12:08 John C Reilly's line "It's cool to have a code name is a nod to his movie "Talladega Nights" with Will Ferrell where they had the code names "Shake and Bake"
This was the movie I used to get my buddy into the MCU during Covid. We took some magic treats and watched this and Dr Strange in one afternoon. He binged the entire MCU after that
Caught this one in theaters. The audience had a lot of fun with this one. Plenty of laughs. The whole misfit group of heroes is a fun trope I really enjoy.
The alien who speaks for thanos, to ronan, also played Wesley on Buffy the vampire slayer and angel. He is also married to Allyson hannigan who he met on buffy.
The thing about arms getting cut off in every movie recently is actually intentional! Kevin Feige (MCU showrunner) said that they looked at Phase 2 as their "Empire Strikes Back" period, and so, as a gag, they put in a moment of someone's arm getting cut off in every Phase 2 movie as an homage to Luke losing his hand.
Your comment made me realize this was the first movie I rented - 10 yrs ago! - that I watched completely back to back. I was so happy and satisfied by a movie, I had to watch it again immediately. Oddly……it was probably the last movie I rented.
I think the aspect ratio change was meant to signify an 'eye opening moment' when the audience the first time understood a word of Groot ... cause he still said 'I' but we learnt to understand his language so we could hear what he meant and it was 'we'. This will be a recurring idea in Guardians 3.
I think what makes the MCU work beyond its superhero “genre” is that it doesn’t treat superhero movies like they’re all just “superhero” movies, if that makes sense. What I mean is, they make great movies in a multitude of genres that just happen to tell stories about superheroes. You’ve got spy thriller movies like Winter Soldier, pure action like Iron Man, war movies like Captain America, now Sci-Fi here in Guardians. And it doesn’t stop here, their films get even more diverse and nuanced moving forward. Sometimes it doesn’t quite work, but more often than not it succeeds.
Now while it was couple of years between Guardians films, and a couple of other MCU films came out between them, I believe chronologically Guardians 2 is the next story that happens in the MCU A couple of cast notes - Sean Gunn (James' brother) played ravager 1st mate Kraglin, also did the motion capture performance for Rocket while filming. He often plays in his brother's projects, he plays two (small) parts in The Suicide Squad, and will return in the upcoming DCU series The Creature Commandos (an animated, but intergrated series) on Max. But most people know him as Kirk from Gilmore Girls. Long time friend and collaborator Nathan FIllion voiced the convict who Groot picks up by his nostrils. Robot Chicken creator, and former Scott Evil from Austin Powers, Seth Green voices Howard the Duck James Gunn himself provided the motion capture for baby Groot dancing in the post credit scene.
I have an old-school connection to the guardians. They were originally a comic that I just love from 1969 that had Yondu and a crystal guy and some others and then about eight years later there was a marvel special comic book featuring star Lord that has nothing to do with the guardians, but the artist and writer on comic the absolute top pinnacle of comic book teams at that time, John Byrne, Terry Austin, and Chris Claremont . Marvel later, took star, Lord and combined him with the name guardians with a whole new crew and then this movie was a throwback to all of it in pieces. For us comic book folks it’s always amazing to see how they rearrange it and still make it work.
I’m pretty up and down on the marvel movies, but I really enjoyed all of the Guardians flicks. Super fun space opera with a surprising amount of genuine emotion while still being funny and bonkers. I wish more corporate popcorn movies had that level of love and craft put into them.
Howard the Duck was a sort of satirical character who first appeared in the early 1970s and was typically used in the craziest space/fantasy stories they could cook up. He was the source of some mild legal conflict between Marvel and Disney, who felt like he too closely resembled Donald Duck. Marvel agreed to make him wear pants. The 1986 movie is one of the more notorious "so bad it's good" flicks of the '80s. Howard has shown up in a couple more cameos in the MCU but one of them is so small and fast you probably won't notice it.
The _Collector_ is extremely ancient (first to evolve after the big bang, one of the oldest in the universe) similar to the _Grandmaster_ (a name worth remembering). For the most part, he could be considered neutral, although he'd likely not be the best thing for a random human to run into.
I was waiting for you to get to this one - it's one of my favorite MCU movies. Something I'd like to strongly suggest to you - After Avengers 4 (the final one) but before Guardians Vol 3, try to watch (whether or not you do a reaction to it), please try to watch the Guardian Holiday Special. It's only about 45 minutes long, and has some things that get further fleshed out in Guardians Vol 3. It completely essential to see it, but it does make a couple of things in Guardians 3 make more sense if you've seen the holiday special. 👍
After seeing her on Doctor Who, shaving her head for this role was a crime against humanity, but she did do a great job :) SPOILERS: I was initially a little disappointed how small a role this was for her, but with Nebula developed more in the sequels it paid off - I really enjoyed the blend of antagonistic, violent prickliness and vulnerable center haha. Her scene with Tony is one of my favorite parts of _Endgame_ (near the beginning)
"Take my hand, Peter," will never fail to get me crying. Not in the beginning of the movie, not at the end. "We are groot," always gets me too. I wasn't singing along with you, but I was definitely singing it when I got up for lunch a few minutes later. I saw this opening weekend with my nephews (8 and 10), and I had to drive two hours out of my way to pick them up from their father and deliver them to my sister after seeing it. They loved "turd blossom" too.
When this hit theaters, my future wife & I were visiting Portland, OR (pre-covid), and looking to have a little downtime after all the nature walks. We were already Marvel film fans, but this one blew our minds! The downdraft track became one of our favorite. Fooled Around And Fell in Love would be one of our songs during the reception. Sadly, she passed from Cancer in 2020, when our son was only 2yo. As he is only 6yo currently, I haven't shown him this film, but it will probably resonate w/ him. Though this film resonates with me for our relationship, she was also a Huge Deadpool fan, where as I am a Huge Wolverine fan. Do, obviously, the new Deadpool 3 is one I'm not missing. Even plan on taking her ashes w/ me to see it.
I believe the greatest feat of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 was the ease and brilliance it has, introducing rather unknown characters (to a wider non-comic audience) and making them all unique, relatable and lovable. Like, not just being an origin movie for one Spiderman, but for a guy with gadgets, a green woman, a simple warrior, a tree and a racoon, pull that off - instant win. Vol 2. - no spoilers, but bring tissues.
This was my favorite until Logan, Infinity War, and Endgame. So it's still in the top 4 or 5 lol... Super excited for you to get to the Infinity saga! You're getting close! Keep up the great work 🤘
28:58 Funny you should say that. Cyclops & Havok's father Corsair ran a joint mission with Rocket Racoon, which was a really cool Guardians/Starjammers crossover.
The question isn’t how did the cassette tape last that long, but how did the orange spongy headphones of his Walkman hold up? Those things needed to be replaced often.
I've been waiting and looking forward to your reaction to this one. Guardians is so fresh and different from anything else that comes before it in the MCU. The comic it's based on was barely known and poorly received but on the screen it got turned into a modern classic.
Fun fact: director James Gunn is currently one of the co-head DC Studios/DCU (DC Universe) similar to what Kevin Feige is to the MCU, he's also the director for the upcoming Superman movie next year, Gunn's DCU also takes inspiration from MCU's PHASES with his being called CHAPTERS, Gunn's DCU "Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters" will kick off starting next year with his Superman. DC Comics are a rival company to Marvel Comics with some of their characters having taken some inspirations to one another.
Rocket Racoon and Howard the Duck come from the same Halfworld experiments. Also the space dog is the Soviet dog, Laika, that was launched into Orbit on Sputnik 2 in 1957. While she died in orbit from overheating and then burned up on reentry months later, GotG makes it look like she was "collected" and survived the mission.
She's in Captain America: The First Avenger, but not who you said. During the Star Spangled Man musical montage, she approaches Cap for an autograph with a wide smile, which catches his eye.
James Gunn and his brother Sean both did work with Troma films in their early days and it shows in their comedy. Sean was also in the movie as Kraglin (Yondu’s 2nd in command) as well as the on set stand in for rocket.
Good reaction. Btw - The Orb, the Infinity Stones, the Maltese Falcon, the Ark Of The Covenant, the Death Star Plans, the Holy Grail, etc. - the generic term for all of these kinds of things is 'the MacGuffin". The term originated in the old Alfred Hitchcock movies, being The Thing in the story that everybody is chasing after, even if it is unclear why.
14:21 The blue alien being held up by the nose by Groot is voiced by Nathan Fillion. He and director James Gunn became really good friends when they worked on the movie Slither together. Ever sense then James has tried to cast Nathan in every movie he makes, even if it is a small role.
The dog is a telepathic Russian space dog that ends up becoming Chief of security of Knowhere in the books. Cosmo was introduced in the Nova comic series when The Nova Corps homeworld is destroyed but the world mind and power(aka Nova Force) is downloaded into Richard Rider of Earth. He basically becomes a cosmically powered being that ends up fighting along side characters like Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill and the GOG. He and Quill save the universe at one point. Sacrificing theirselves in the process but later are found to be alive and they are both still very much active in the books. Nova has been in the X-Men books lately and Guardians just wrapped up another series of books and storyline. The lineup of GOG characters has changed quite a bit over the years but since the movie came out they are pretty much sticking with this lineup for now. I was obsessed with Silver Surfer and Cosmic storylines which led me into loving Guardians of the Galaxy. And the movie was so good. Even though it strayed far from the books it was still amazing.❤❤❤
One of the inmates throwing things at Quill and the others? Director Lloyd Kaufman, co-owner of Troma Studios, the independent exploitation film studio behind such classics as The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and Tromeo and Juliet...which was the screenplay debut of one James Gunn.
While she doesn't have a huge role, I have a friend (Mikaela Hoover) in this movie. She's actually really good friends with James Gunn and pops up in almost all of his projects.
I noticed today, for the first time ever, that Lloyd Kauffman of Troma Studios is among the prisoners throwing garbage at the guardians when they enter the prison. Which makes sense, as James Gunn got his start with Troma.
James Gunn was mentored by Lloyd Kaufman on how to write scripts and direct movies. James wanted Lloyd to have a cameo in Guardians as a way of thanking Lloyd for his mentorship. Also Sean Gunn is James’ younger brother and he plays as Kraglin. Sean would also wear a green mocap suit as a stand in for Rocket’s scenes
33:09 Asgard calls them realms, we call them planets. Its perfectly understandable to think that maybe realms means something fancy like dimensions or whatever, but in reality Thor can fly a ship from Asgard to Earth and vice versa. The Bifrost just lets them create a wormhole for faster/easier travel and they use fancy words like realms instead of planets.
The Guardians of the Galaxy were a pretty obscure team when this movie came out. I was a big fan of the comic, but I had doubts when this movie was first announced. I just felt like such an obscure team wouldn't do well at the box office. I am so glad that I was proven wrong and this movie became incredibly popular. It still amazes me that characters like Groot and Rocket Raccoon are household names now. If you would have told me that back in 2010, I would have never believed it.
Everybody sees Stan Lee, but the real major cameo is Lloyd Kaufman at 14:15 . Aslo the 2 most underrated James Gunn movies are Super & Tromeo and Julliet.
And also that they could make movies about characters no one ever heard of - even comic book readers - and still have it be a good and successful movie.

To the best of my knowledge the 9 realms from Thor are just the 8 worlds + Asgard can be reached via the Rainbow Bridge. They were conquered/protected/considered territory of Asgard. The rest of the Galaxy/Universe exists and could be accessed if the Asgards wanted to use space ships.

“This dialogue is so good, every character has such a point of view, it’s so strong!”
Shan-Shan is killing me with the 'fox dude'. Has... has she never seen a raccoon?? 😂🤣❤
Welcome to the Guardians of the freaking galaxy 💫
Only don't say "freaking"
This goes way beyond the 9 realms. You're now entering the entire known and unknown universe. Thor and his group are just an extremely small portion of that.
Just (well, not "just") 9 worlds that are connected with wormholes, the convergence, etc.
He binged the entire MCU after that
One of the best soundtracks in movie history. Such a good compilation of great classic songs.
Caught this one in theaters. The audience had a lot of fun with this one. Plenty of laughs. The whole misfit group of heroes is a fun trope I really enjoy.
Same!
@@ShanelleRiccio you also caught it in the theatre?
The alien who speaks for thanos, to ronan, also played Wesley on Buffy the vampire slayer and angel. He is also married to Allyson hannigan who he met on buffy.
Holy moly, that's Alexis Denisof? I didn't recognise him at all, and I was a big Buffy/Angel fan.
@@theaikidoka Joss put him into the Avengers. He has a long conversation with Loki.
It makes sense now!!
To me this is the best script Marvel has produced.
Your comment made me realize this was the first movie I rented - 10 yrs ago! - that I watched completely back to back. I was so happy and satisfied by a movie, I had to watch it again immediately.
Oddly……it was probably the last movie I rented.
16:22 Shanelle confirms that, even as a CGI monster alien man, Josh Brolin looks good.
“What determines who becomes an Avenger?”
Well, first, you need a cause to avenge…
"There was an idea..."
The "space dog" is Cosmo The Space Dog. She had her own Marvel comic.
I think the aspect ratio change was meant to signify an 'eye opening moment' when the audience the first time understood a word of Groot ... cause he still said 'I' but we learnt to understand his language so we could hear what he meant and it was 'we'. This will be a recurring idea in Guardians 3.
Aspect ratio change is usually when switching between IMAX sequences and non IMAX sequences.
Also, Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman appearing on the prison balcony is my favorite MCU cameo.
I don't think I ever heard of Troma, but I thought I recognized that guy.
23:31 - I love that Chris Pratt dropping the orb was a "blooper" that they kept in the movie. 😂
When James Gunn did this movie he took inspiration to write the characters from the protagonists of sci-fi series Farscape.
Over the Edge is a 1979 Matt Dillon. O-o-h Child song and many others. Might be an inspiration for this movie or soundtrack.
The soundtrack in this really made the movie. In some movies, it's just there in the background. In this movie, it was almost like an extra character.
Omg is that Peter Serafinowicz at 31:12
Yep
Now while it was couple of years between Guardians films, and a couple of other MCU films came out between them, I believe chronologically Guardians 2 is the next story that happens in the MCU
A couple of cast notes - Sean Gunn (James' brother) played ravager 1st mate Kraglin, also did the motion capture performance for Rocket while filming.
Robot Chicken creator, and former Scott Evil from Austin Powers, Seth Green voices Howard the Duck
James Gunn himself provided the motion capture for baby Groot dancing in the post credit scene.
@39:29 Shanelle is stacked.
As a point of trivia, HOWARD THE DUCK is the first actual big studio movie adaptation of a Marvel Comic.
Nebula is Karen Gillan from the new Jumanji and Dr Who.
After seeing her on Doctor Who, shaving her head for this role was a crime against humanity, but she did do a great job :)
SPOILERS: I was initially a little disappointed how small a role this was for her, but with Nebula developed more in the sequels it paid off - I really enjoyed the blend of antagonistic, violent prickliness and vulnerable center haha.
This is one of the sweetest movie watching stories I’ve ever read on my channel!! ❤ I’m so sorry for your loss!
It becomes evident in the 2nd movie why he was able to withstand the stone......
The question isn’t how did the cassette tape last that long, but how did the orange spongy headphones of his Walkman hold up?
Those things needed to be replaced often.
@13:44 So... Shanelle randomly has a great voice to match her awesome personality...
Nice.
This was the film that got me interested in the MCU.
I also SO love that you're calling him fox.
The actress who played Peter's mom was in Captain America, the double date at the World's Fair
She's in Captain America: The First Avenger, but not who you said. During the Star Spangled Man musical montage, she approaches Cap for an autograph with a wide smile, which catches his eye.
No, she wasn't. But... one of the dates was Jenna Coleman (best known as playing Clara (one of the Doctor's companions in Doctor Who))
James Gunn and his brother Sean both did work with Troma films in their early days and it shows in their comedy. Sean was also in the movie as Kraglin (Yondu’s 2nd in command) as well as the on set stand in for rocket.
The Guardians soundtracks are absolutely legendary. Some of the best in movie history.
Crazy that as of TODAY (August 1st) it is now exactly 10 years old. Still an all time favorite MCU film.
My Favorite MCU film of all time and the best Trilogy!
100% agreed, this was such a breath of fresh air and it was for quite a while my favorite MCU film.
The main function of Starlord's mask is to lower the cost of CGI.
hahahha thats so funny
14:21 The blue alien being held up by the nose by Groot is voiced by Nathan Fillion. He and director James Gunn became really good friends when they worked on the movie Slither together. Ever sense then James has tried to cast Nathan in every movie he makes, even if it is a small role.
Always singing along during Guardians😂🙌. This one remains my favourite of the MCU!! Been looking forward to you getting to this point!
As for Thanos eventually he just has to decide to do it himself...😊
11:45 LOL "Oh, I'll get that arm."
Guardians Vol. 2 is so damn good, I can’t watch it without balling my eyes out at the end
Every.
Time.
I'm willing to bet she'll 100% is gonna be on the Superman movie next year.
Aslo the 2 most underrated James Gunn movies are Super & Tromeo and Julliet.
this movie was a surprise and a well needed palette cleanser
This movie changed the MCU in such a positive way. It showed the studio that you could put comedy into the MCU, while still having a serious story.
And also that they could make movies about characters no one ever heard of - even comic book readers - and still have it be a good and successful movie.
Our Hostess said that her friends call her Shan, and I often refer to our Hostess as Shan, so does that mean we're friends, or just that I'm a presumptuous A-Hole? 😆
24:50 Always love the Star Wars Love. It's easy to hate on it (especially considering some recent missteps), but the core of storytelling remains and will return.
30:54 Dog-Fight, Fist-Fight, Gun-Fight...got it. 🛩👊🔫
34:15 He didn't say it, but that smile was all "Look what I Did!😃" 🤣
In the Christmas Special you actually get Kevin Bacon, btw!
I met James Gunn at Target in St Louis. We were both in the toy section 🤣
And that’s how we became friends 🙌🏼
If you like the arms coming off, it might be time for a Michael Ironside marathon
Or an 00s DC Comics marathon.
