As a retired federal worker I totally agree with them getting back to the office and being accountable of their time and work. They are not more productive at home. This is especially true of management.
I am a federal worker and I work remotely and harder than I ever worked in the private sector, sometimes 50+ hours a week and without taking breaks. I am a gen X and worked several jobs (including the Navy) for decades before I took this offer. I can’t speak for every government worker, but many are more productive without a bunch of talkers all around us.
@@Corijean2024 This is what I hear from everyone defending remote work. But you know that's a big lie. How many times have you gone out walking, watched TV, take a late shower, lift few weights or knock one off with your significant other? Answer this honestly to yourself.
Utter nonsense from a fool 1:40........if you're working at home, you're heavily distanced from the company culture. The culture is less likely to impact you if you don't show up at the same building with everybody else in your company or department.
It’s making sure that the person is doing the job in the correct manner and not just claiming hours worked. You go to work. You don’t work from home and have the same productivity.

working remote can be more efficient in my opinion. instead of spending time packing a lunch, driving, using government resources, all of that time can be spent on the job and some of the costs can be transferred to the worker, ie phone, internet service, electricity bill, water bill, office supplies etc. the worker will bear the extra costs because it allows them to spend their time more efficiently between work and home. frankly, going to the office makes me less efficient because I just wanna get home asap. all the things I do in the office, I can do at home more efficiently and faster by multitasking since the setup at home is more efficient. But it is also dependent on the job the person has and my work can be accounted for. i think for the jobs where there's the possibility that someone has a mouse mover and is not actually doing the job are the ones that should be in-person.
Working Remotely is only good for short term! If you are working at home, there is not Random Drug/Alcohol testing. Working at home also are distractions that would not happen at the office, AKA children, TV shows, cleaning house and excreta
Oh my, you poor thing. Having to pack a lunch and drive too? How dare your employers expect such time-consuming labor. Wait, aren't you a at-will employee? Wasn't this part of your original agreement when you decided to work for your employer? I'm guessing nobody forced you to sign on the employment form.
@@BakoSooner my point is that remote work can be more efficient depending on the job. for example, I do not need to drive to the office to answer phones. I can do it just as well from home. Meanwhile, the government saves money from the phone, internet, electricty, and water bill.
I'm a fed and am definitely more productive working from home. I'm also busier as in my work is always with me versus pre pandemic when I would leave my work at the office.... My entire team is spead throughout the country, so when I do come in since we have to a couple times a week, I take 2 trains to just sit there by myself while working with people across the country. You want to talk about cutting fat? You could start with the massive empty buildings these agencies have that use a ton of energy and resources. Forcing people back to work is not forward thinking at all.
Completely agree! I am in the office once a week, and when I’m there, I don’t speak with anyone about actual work cause my job is independent by nature. There is no need to collaborate with anyone on projects for my job, so the office is pointless. I sit in Chicago traffic for 2 hrs and pay for parking just to use smaller computer screens and work in silence in an office.
Forget about the back to the office push. Just layoff the government employees altogether. Save the salery, benefits and the office rent. Winner all of the way around.
The reason they want people back in the office is because businesses were suffering. Especially the restaurants in DC, all the Metro trains are not generating enough revenue as well. They want people to spend money it’s all about money, during the pandemic remote workers were being praised for all the work that was getting done. Now it’s a problem because they have all these empty spaces.
2:44 ok boomer. Both of my parents work from home and the work they do is even more cognitively rigorous than those who work in-person. Tech/AI have made it literally never a problem to measure productivity unless your job is still clock-in & out on pieces of paper stapled to the wall (I kid you not my old job did that and people lied about how much they worked all the time sadly).
My department pulled nurses to perform administrative work to telework full time. Idiocracy when they could work par time administratively and help out caring for veterans. Managers are not all very smart. 😂
I stayed for a month at an Airbnb while working on the road. The host is a government employee. I left the house everyday hours before he woke up. I got back early afternoons and I only saw that guy working twice. He would have his computer open on some govt website, but he would be watching TV or dealing with some carpenter working on his house or just be gone. I know a bunch on here say they get so much done or whatever, but that is just not my experience.
Eventually, hopefully, people realize the extent of the systemic problems within our work culture, rules and ethics. From the top executives to the dime store clerk there is major disconnect and discord. Too many capable, viable people look lazy...but why?
Companies aim to be innovative and increase profits, yet many fall short in how they treat and motivate employees. Many do the bare minimum, while others do even less. Despite ample studies highlighting the benefits of work-life balance and remote work for both employees and employers, many companies choose to ignore these facts. Elon is innovative in many ways but remains closed-minded about remote work. The same goes for many other CEOs.
RTO is for mediocre middle managers who have no real value. The old guy, the NN anchor is out of touch. I work to live, I don't live to work. And I want to do that remotely.
Any retirement eligible fed with a paid up house should retire as of mid January, 2025. It’s not worth the aggravation. I highly recommend retirement. They actually should mandate it for all government employees and politicians at 67.
All the worst people. Fixed it for you. When my company (15,000 employees) forced us back in the office, productivity surged and the lazy folks quit. Win-win.
Exactly, especially considering how much they talk about supporting veterans which make up the majority of the federal government workforce. This will barely do anything to help the national deficit. The war mongers on the hill chose to run up.
It's not going to end well. Some work areas do require work at the workspace, but some stuff can be done remotely or at home. It's just going to get rid of workers who can do the work remotely effectively.
I'm inviting people to quit. As an employee for 45 years, going to work everyday for a paycheck is nothing to sneer at. There will be plenty of people who need a job and probably will be working harder than the ones who are already there feeling entitled and privileged.
Telework made us 3 times more productive, and improved everyone's lives, yet people want to stay stuck on stupid and simply control instead of using these years to telework even better. Those of us that have been there a long time (carrying you) are going to leave you with it. We've seen and been helping this inexperienced crowd you want to replace us with. They can sit under you and worship you..... LOL!! Good Luck!!
Well, this is going to cause a lot of people to quit, which is exactly what they want. It's going to be a blood bath, and those people in the system need to be urgently looking for alternative employment. It's sad, but it's absolutely necessary to cut the vast amount of waste and reduce the National Debt, something we urgently need to do in the UK.
No, it’s not necessary. Ferrell workers should not be punished because the government’s mishandling of the national deficit. It’s actually quite inhumane. A reform, be more efficient, sure. But no, it’s barely going to put a dent in the deficit by firing people. If anything, it’s going to run up unemployment and potentially crash the market.
In my experience during pandemic, my co-workers were difficult to reach when they were supposed to be on their PC. And I see plenty of neighbors walking around during mid-day. There might be few that are more studious, but vast majority were goofing off during work hours (walking the dog, late morning shower, playing video games, binge watching...). Working together has many benefits. They include exchange of ideas, team collaboration, actually working instead of goofing around... And they actually have to dress professionally instead of lounging around their PJs all day.
Who cares what people wear if they’re being productive? Are you saying there’s a correlation or causation between traditional office-wear and productivity?
Will you give them double the pay when they work overtime. Donald Trump lives to work and sleeps very little, unlike the Bidens who spend their time on the beach in Delaware. I doubt that people would ignore the Trumps like they do the Bidens.

WFH is excellent for autistic people (I'm autistic). Back in the mid 90's when I was a systems administrator I set up a system where I could log in to work from home a few days a week using standard POTS. Part of my duties was custom programming and being at home provided a MUCH better atmosphere for writing code. I wrote a custom TSR program that employees could use to instant message me questions and I could remotely answer and solve problems for them. The company owner (who was way forward-thinking for the time) loved the idea and let me run with it. After just two weeks I had to give it up. Why? Was my output low? No, it actually increased dramatically (no work place distractions). It was because the other workers found out I was working from home and got jealous. The owner got so sick of their whining that he asked me to come back in 5 days a week. I believe most of this work from home push-back is from people that are jealous they can't do it as well.

Why are jobs "on the chopping block?" You simply rescind the telework authorization and require return to the office. Those who don't return will simply have abandoned their jobs.
Work from home is a scam. If an employee puts in 20% at home, you are lucky. The reason these people would quit is because they aren't doing anything, and don't want to do anything.
@@atps7057 Have you ever been an employer? There is a reason that there are companies developing monitoring software for work at home employees. It depends. If your work is physical then you obviously can’t phone it in and need to be on location to get things done. However, if you’re crunching numbers and don’t need much face to face with others, then I think you’d be more productive working from home.
So what you’re saying is you want less productivity in the federal government by sending people back into an office all because you can’t work from home and you’re jealous. People working from home are much more productive.
Not exactly. As a taxpayer, I pay for government efficiency. If I'm getting more from a government employee who works from home or anywhere and they're happy, I don't mind not seeing them in their offices. Of course, I know not everyone can and should work from home like the military. But, hey, if the DoD can secure the country efficiently and effectively while working remotely, and they are happy about it, then by all means, work from anywhere! I don't really care what they'll do in between as long as they're doing their job properly and the results are great.
Except when it doesn't make any sense. A lot of federal workers were recruited for teams spread across the country and would never see each other anyway. I know one wo works hybrid and has go into the office just because, and then sits in a federal cubicle by himself once a week instead of at home. A total waste of everyones time and federal resources for him to use govt electricity, real estate and water.
B.S. Federal employees desperately need office time. I’ve worked at the FDA and also built my own business to $100mm annual revenue from scratch. The Federal government is a far cry from private industry in terms of effectiveness and efficiency and there would be no way to get it to where it needs to be with remote work going on.
"I worked at FDA and made my 100 Million business" wow, good for you and the regular folk that paid your salary to do that, makes their point more than anything, the FDA must be super cozy
@KermdoubleO7 My business was entirely separate from the FDA, in a completely different industry and received zero government funding and generated zero revenue from the government unlike, for example, in Mr. Musk’s case. But even that doesn’t matter per se. The issue here and my point was about government INEFFICIENCY. My business was bootstrapped (meaning funded from its own cash flows without investors) from nothing to $100mm in revenue and 200+ employees over ten years and hence was on the other extreme from the FDA that I witnessed. Meaning: Ultra-efficient. Just like presumably most of the 30 million small businesses in the USA. There’s no reason that government agencies shouldn’t be run as ultra-efficient operations.

Vendors in DC complained not enough people are spending money to eat lunch out. So that’s driving the return to office politics.
If you force the smartest people who now WFH back into the office they're going to leave for better opportunities. That's going to leave government with the dumbest of the bunch because they have nowhere to go.
I think they get lazy overtime and figure out the least they need to do to get by.
Employee/ Employer is a give and take relationship. The less the employer gives, the less the employee can take working there
it's better just to use AI to monitor productivity
Yeah because you don't really know who's even voting. They're getting played a lot of money to be there and they're not.
It is a good way to reduce government. We do Not need all of these employees. It is a great gig with great benefits. Wait til they have to get health insurance.
As a retired federal worker I totally agree with them getting back to the office and being accountable of their time and work. They are not more productive at home. This is especially true of management.
Agreed , especially on the tax payers tab.

There is plenty poor performers in the feds
working remote can be more efficient in my opinion. instead of spending time packing a lunch, driving, using government resources, all of that time can be spent on the job and some of the costs can be transferred to the worker, ie phone, internet service, electricity bill, water bill, office supplies etc. the worker will bear the extra costs because it allows them to spend their time more efficiently between work and home. frankly, going to the office makes me less efficient because I just wanna get home asap. all the things I do in the office, I can do at home more efficiently and faster by multitasking since the setup at home is more efficient.
People aren't going to quit, because they need their pension and there aren't enough jobs in the private sector right now.
Forget about the back to the office push. Just layoff the government employees altogether. Save the salery, benefits and the office rent. Winner all of the way around.
2:58 huh? Working from home means that companies don’t have to pay for all of those perks
DOGE 2025🇺🇸

What they're doing is unethical. idiot.
And ones who aren't doing any work at all remotely.
I'm inviting people to quit. As an employee for 45 years, going to work everyday for a paycheck is nothing to sneer at. There will be plenty of people who need a job and probably will be working harder than the ones who are already there feeling entitled and privileged.
