I’ve had B.A in Environmental science and haven’t found work in my field. Everyone either wants a masters degree or 2 plus years experience in the field doing phase 1 and 2 assessments that they don’t teach you in school. Best advice choose a special area want to work in and get degree in that such as biology, geology, environmental or civil engineering and make sure you network in college with company’s and don’t trust your advisors BS unless they have worked specifically in that field prior to taking a university job.

I'm an environmental consultant that works in telecommunications in the NEPA process, which includes identifying natural/cultural resources and consulting with tribes and the public. I love it!!

Also, I am the project manager from start to finish: determining consulting parties based on the site location, placing public notice ads, preliminary research for cultural and natural resources, and kicking off the process with the FCC (for telecommunications projects). There's a lot of milestone management to keep the project on schedule.

I'm in environmental studies and I been having difficulty really finding any information on job outlook and information on what jobs are in demand. I have always been more interested in the sociological aspect of environmentalism so that's why I went for environmental studies but I do worry about the job market and I want to be prepared to know what my options are and what jobs are focused in that area. Could you do a video just about non-science environmental positions?
Definitely a video about that is on the list! In the meantime, the best way to see what kind of jobs are available in that field is to look at job postings now. Pretend you are a new grad and start browsing job forums and see what's out there. I think not enough college/hs students do this and it can be the best way to gauge job outlook. Just give it a few months because some jobs don't get posted daily but will get posted after a few weeks.

I would lean towards environmental biology because I think there’s a better reputation for that degree major name. But honestly not a huge difference

I’m 17, turning 18 soon and plan to go to a 2 year school to study. Some kind of agriculture, botany, or wildlife study’s of some kind(I just really want a career that with have me working in nature and talking about nature, the environment and studying it) I hope it works out for me (not really interested in a 4 year)

I’m enrolled in a Natural resources environmental technology program starting this September at a college here in Nova Scotia, Canada. I’m having second thoughts about it. I know I like environmental studies, biology, and wildlife, but I want a job where I get to pick and choose when I’m out in the field, and something that won’t take me too far from Halifax. I’m getting this feeling with the program I’m enrolled in that I’ll be a glorified labourer in the forest and nothing more.

Try looking for paid internships to get experienced. If you have the ability there is also a lot of good unpaid internships. Usually that's what type of experience they are looking for
@@Alyssa-qk8kf Funny enough I've done quite a load of unpaid work already through my Undergrad (unpaid summer internship and an unpaid Research Assistant position for the majority of a year)...like how much do I have to work for free to finally get a decent career that pays more than minimum wage. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is that they want a higher academic standing (Master's). Maybe that's my next step... And paid internships that I've found usually require someone to be an "active student returning to academic studies in the fall or next year" ... so...

I did a Master's it has opened books for me. Also look into positions like Erosion Control Inspector, Hydrologist, Stormwater Admin or Manager. It's a niche area with few people that are going this route, so there is a need. I started here with a B.S., then gained my M.S.

One thing that has always drove me crazy is zoo jobs ask you to have, say two years, of experience for an entry level job 😤. Thankfully I already do volunteer work/student animal technician at my university. But it’s still very dumb imo to ask for years of experience for entry level positions that don’t even pay that well starting out.
It’s not just zoos, most wildlife jobs do that! I didn’t get an “entry level” wildlife job until I had 2-3 years of experience 🙄 that’s why I’m always encouraging people to do internships and volunteer work in university, so you can rack up some of that experience while in school and actually have a shot at those entry level jobs on graduation.

Not a huge difference but generally environmental science is more technical and environmental studies can be more of the philosophy/politics side of things. Generally I would go for an environmental science major to be a biologist!

Thanks for this! As someone who is currently going after their Environmental Science degree but not exactly sure which route to take with it this was pretty helpful. Is it common for people to wear many different hats in their career at certain times? Say, few years as a research tech, few years as a animal caretaker, few years as a project manager, etc..etc? Or would it behoove me to focus all of my energy into one specified area? Also, would love to see your AUS/NZ travel vlog if you decide to do so!
I think it is common to do different things out of necessity. Sometimes there’s only a few related jobs available so you have to get good at spinning your experience to fit many different roles. It’s easier if you specialize in one thing to get a job in that thing, but many times job scarcity doesn’t allow for that! I would look at becoming a bit more of a generalist if I was you and get good at spinning your experience to fit multiple niches.
It's a daunting task but it's great for every high school student to do as much research as possible into their potential careers. They need to look into what they want to do, how difficult it is to get a job in their field, where they want to live, how much they want to earn, and what the stability and upward earning potential of the job is. It's true that you will never work a day in your life if you love what you do but earning more helps pay off the student loan, car, living, and entertainment debts easier.

Hi Lynn. I'm trying to decide if I should do a master's or not. I got my BS in Ocean and Coastal resources, but every entry level job I see they want 5 years of experience. I did a few internships with the Student Conservation Association and I'm currently working for a startup company. I thought I was going to do alot of microbiological laboratory work, but my boss has me do mostly Warehouse management and logistics work (forklifts, shipping and receiving, ect...). As such, I don't have any GIS (except my intro to GIS classe), NEPA work, or reports other than school. I love learning and I don't want my life to end in supply chain management as my career (I hate that only logistics companies contact me). But I'm afraid that if I do a master's, I will be too overqualified for entry level companies and will be no better off than before. My current Warehouse job is now two years of experience for me. I wan to do a master's because I love the field but I fear having no job in my desired field. Sorry for rampling. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Have you applied to a ton of other jobs in the environmental field first? I would give it a honest shot to try to get a new job without a masters, maybe even volunteer in your time off at an environmental organization so they see current work experience and highlight all applicable skills from your current job. If none of that works then a masters wouldn't be a bad idea
@@kristina_lynn I keep trying. Like I said, even with my SCA internships, they still want years of experience for entry level positions. I apply everytime my school gives me notices. Im constantly applying at Audubon, TCEQ, Texas parks and wildlife, Fugro, AECOM, SWCA, Oceanearing, Golder associates, HDP, LJA engineering, ect... I've offered to volunteer to groups but almost nothing happens (I live in Houston TX). I'm applying to and going to networking events in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi, Rockport, Baton rouge.
@@tylerlamb9930 Shoot yeah, it's tough out there. You're doing the right things though. I would still echo trying to build your resume with recent volunteer/intern work in related organizations. If you haven't already done so make a good LinkedIn page and apply to jobs on there - that's how I got my first job was via a connection with a recruiter on linkedin. You can add coworkers, old classmates etc and see where they work too
I'm a Computer Science graduate. But I always wanted to study Biology or Zoology as I have love for animals and nature. Now I'm thinking to do MSc in Environmental Science. It's a 1 year degree. I'm hoping that with this degree I can apply to universities abroad and study Wildlife conservation. Will I have difficulty to get job as I don't have Bachelor in ES? Please correct me if I'm taking wrong decision.
If you get your MSc then your bachelors is much less important, so you should be able to find a position. You may need prerequisite courses you don’t have though since you don’t have an ecology background so it may take longer than a year if you don’t have all the required courses. I think doing a masters in environmental science would be a great way to transition into this field. Just be aware of the need to get experience outside of just your education through internships or volunteer work if possible
Surprised at how many of these jobs don’t actually have the objective of preserving and protecting the environment / wilderness against corporate interests and is instead often working with corporations who have a history of environmental destruction. Wondering why this dilemma wasn’t discussed / why the issue doesn’t come up more.
Hi! Sorry to bug you but I have a few questions. 1. Is there a major difference between what conservation biologists do and what wildlife biologists do? 2. What are good classes to take to get into your field in undergrad? The environmental science major at my college is a bit loose and I don’t know if I should stick to biology and ecology classes or if I should take things like chemistry too? 3. Can wildlife biologists work in policy?
Not a big difference as in the background and training are very similar but wildlife biologists focus on wildlife (and not even necessarily environmental conservation). Conservation biologists could look at the big picture of conservation actions or at other disciplines like wetlands, rare plants. I don’t have any specific recommendations for classes, but if you’re interested in a grad program look at entry requirements and make sure you take any of those classes. For wildlife jobs, ecology and wildlife courses, especially labs, are very applicable. However being a scientist does require you have some base knowledge on chemistry, physics. And to your final question yes they sure do! It’s a different set of skills needed for policy than field work but it’s definitely an option for wildlife biologists.
I have actually just finished my degree. I have a BS in Environmental Science with my concentration being in Fish and Wildlife Management. I have put in for a position with TPWD(Texas Parks etc) for a program specialist position that they have available locally. Do you have any experience getting a position within the state? Trying to look for more options and also trying to stay flexible.
Go for environmental science, I studied Environmental Engineering, and I we could be all of the above, but I love being an Environmental Specialist Historic Preservation.

(Like; 'there are no special species in the building area' etc.). - Is the most money still being made through fossil fuel companies? 1. Yes when I worked in consulting they sure did want good news, doesn’t mean they got it though 😉 In Alberta as a biologist you had a professional license that required you to operate with integrity and be unbiased. Not everyone worked like that but integrity and honest reporting were my values. That’s a really good question. 2. By not working for any companies in any way related for fossil fuels you’re cutting off a ton of your options but it’s still possible! Also take into account that we need people like you with high morals accurately reporting the impacts of oil and gas developments and helping the environment in a Boots on the ground Way! But I currently work out of the oil and gas industry since I moved to British Columbia. There are opportunities in government and the non profit world that might be more in line with your ethics :)

Sounds like you should study animal science or zoology! Perhaps find specific animals you like such as farm animals or wild ones.

I’m enrolled in a Natural resources environmental technology program starting this September at a college here in Nova Scotia, Canada. I’m having second thoughts about it. I know I like environmental studies, biology, and wildlife, but I want a job where I get to pick and choose when I’m out in the field, and something that won’t take me too far from Halifax. I’m getting this feeling with the program I’m enrolled in that I’ll be a glorified labourer in the forest and nothing more.

I graduated from my BSc in Environment a year ago and have had trouble finding work for the last year. Do you recommend a Master's program in certain circumstances or for specific jobs? I have no idea what I want to do and every rejection is based on the fact that I "lack experience"...but how am I supposed to get it?
Try looking for paid internships to get experienced. If you have the ability there is also a lot of good unpaid internships. Usually that's what type of experience they are looking for
@@Alyssa-qk8kf Funny enough I've done quite a load of unpaid work already through my Undergrad (unpaid summer internship and an unpaid Research Assistant position for the majority of a year)...like how much do I have to work for free to finally get a decent career that pays more than minimum wage. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is that they want a higher academic standing (Master's). Maybe that's my next step...
And paid internships that I've found usually require someone to be an "active student returning to academic studies in the fall or next year" ... so...

I did a Master's it has opened books for me. Also look into positions like Erosion Control Inspector, Hydrologist, Stormwater Admin or Manager. It's a niche area with few people that are going this route, so there is a need. I started here with a B.S., then gained my M.S.
I appreciate the knowledge; I learned a little bit from you. I have a master's degree in microbiology. I'd want to pursue a PhD in these areas, which have great earning potential and need a lot of fieldwork. Please recommend. 1. the natural world 2. Microbiology in scientific terms 3. One thing that has always drove me crazy is zoo jobs ask you to have, say two years, of experience for an entry level job 😤. Thankfully I already do volunteer work/student animal technician at my university. But it’s still very dumb imo to ask for years of experience for entry level positions that don’t even pay that well starting out.

It’s not just zoos, most wildlife jobs do that! I didn’t get an “entry level” wildlife job until I had 2-3 years of experience 🙄 that’s why I’m always encouraging people to do internships and volunteer work in university, so you can rack up some of that experience while in school and actually have a shot at those entry level jobs on graduation.
Vegan Below Zero yeah that’s true ! I graduate Fall 2020 and I’ll have 3 years of experience. It’s such a competitive field, it can be a bit discouraging.
im in highschool and very interested in becoming a wildlife biologist! not many schools in the country i live in offer ecology, the ones that do offer are very far away :(( so would choosing an environmental science course for college still let me become a wildlife biologist?? thank you for these videos they're really encouraging and informational !

Not a huge difference but generally environmental science is more technical and environmental studies can be more of the philosophy/politics side of things. Generally I would go for an environmental science major to be a biologist!

Thanks for this! As someone who is currently going after their Environmental Science degree but not exactly sure which route to take with it this was pretty helpful. Is it common for people to wear many different hats in their career at certain times? Say, few years as a research tech, few years as a animal caretaker, few years as a project manager, etc..etc? Or would it behoove me to focus all of my energy into one specified area? Also, would love to see your AUS/NZ travel vlog if you decide to do so!
I think it is common to do different things out of necessity. Sometimes there’s only a few related jobs available so you have to get good at spinning your experience to fit many different roles. It’s easier if you specialize in one thing to get a job in that thing, but many times job scarcity doesn’t allow for that! I would look at becoming a bit more of a generalist if I was you and get good at spinning your experience to fit multiple niches.

It's a daunting task but it's great for every high school student to do as much research as possible into their potential careers. They need to look into what they want to do, how difficult it is to get a job in their field, where they want to live, how much they want to earn, and what the stability and upward earning potential of the job is. It's true that you will never work a day in your life if you love what you do but earning more helps pay off the student loan, car, living, and entertainment debts easier.

Hi Lynn. I'm trying to decide if I should do a master's or not. I got my BS in Ocean and Coastal resources, but every entry level job I see they want 5 years of experience. I did a few internships with the Student Conservation Association and I'm currently working for a startup company. I thought I was going to do alot of microbiological laboratory work, but my boss has me do mostly Warehouse management and logistics work (forklifts, shipping and receiving, ect...). As such, I don't have any GIS (except my intro to GIS classe), NEPA work, or reports other than school.
I love learning and I don't want my life to end in supply chain management as my career (I hate that only logistics companies contact me). But I'm afraid that if I do a master's, I will be too overqualified for entry level companies and will be no better off than before.
My current Warehouse job is now two years of experience for me. I wan to do a master's because I love the field but I fear having no job in my desired field.

Have you applied to a ton of other jobs in the environmental field first? I would give it a honest shot to try to get a new job without a masters, maybe even volunteer in your time off at an environmental organization so they see current work experience and highlight all applicable skills from your current job. If none of that works then a masters wouldn't be a bad idea
@@kristina_lynn I keep trying. Like I said, even with my SCA internships, they still want years of experience for entry level positions. I apply everytime my school gives me notices. Im constantly applying at Audubon, TCEQ, Texas parks and wildlife, Fugro, AECOM, SWCA, Oceanearing, Golder associates, HDP, LJA engineering, ect... I've offered to volunteer to groups but almost nothing happens (I live in Houston TX). I'm applying to and going to networking events in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi, Rockport, Baton rouge.
@@tylerlamb9930 Shoot yeah, it's tough out there. You're doing the right things though. I would still echo trying to build your resume with recent volunteer/intern work in related organizations. If you haven't already done so make a good LinkedIn page and apply to jobs on there - that's how I got my first job was via a connection with a recruiter on linkedin. You can add coworkers, old classmates etc and see where they work too
I'm a Computer Science graduate. But I always wanted to study Biology or Zoology as I have love for animals and nature. Now I'm thinking to do MSc in Environmental Science. It's a 1 year degree. I'm hoping that with this degree I can apply to universities abroad and study Wildlife conservation. Will I have difficulty to get job as I don't have Bachelor in ES? Please correct me if I'm taking wrong decision.
If you get your MSc then your bachelors is much less important, so you should be able to find a position. You may need prerequisite courses you don’t have though since you don’t have an ecology background so it may take longer than a year if you don’t have all the required courses. I think doing a masters in environmental science would be a great way to transition into this field. Just be aware of the need to get experience outside of just your education through internships or volunteer work if possible
currently undecided and don't know what else to do, But I am quite passionate about the environment so why not use my brain for something good.
Surprised at how many of these jobs don’t actually have the objective of preserving and protecting the environment / wilderness against corporate interests and is instead often working with corporations who have a history of environmental destruction. Wondering why this dilemma wasn’t discussed / why the issue doesn’t come up more.
Hi! Sorry to bug you but I have a few questions.
1. Is there a major difference between what conservation biologists do and what wildlife biologists do?
2. What are good classes to take to get into your field in undergrad? The environmental science major at my college is a bit loose and I don’t know if I should stick to biology and ecology classes or if I should take things like chemistry too?
3. Can wildlife biologists work in policy?
Not a big difference as in the background and training are very similar but wildlife biologists focus on wildlife (and not even necessarily environmental conservation). Conservation biologists could look at the big picture of conservation actions or at other disciplines like wetlands, rare plants. I don’t have any specific recommendations for classes, but if you’re interested in a grad program look at entry requirements and make sure you take any of those classes. For wildlife jobs, ecology and wildlife courses, especially labs, are very applicable. However being a scientist does require you have some base knowledge on chemistry, physics. And to your final question yes they sure do! It’s a different set of skills needed for policy than field work but it’s definitely an option for wildlife biologists.

I have actually just finished my degree. I have a BS in Environmental Science with my concentration being in Fish and Wildlife Management. I have put in for a position with TPWD(Texas Parks etc) for a program specialist position that they have available locally. Do you have any experience getting a position within the state? Trying to look for more options and also trying to stay flexible.
Go for environmental science, I studied Environmental Engineering, and I we could be all of the above, but I love being an Environmental Specialist Historic Preservation.
Im in my final year of environmental studies instead of science, kinda just realizing there's more of a need for scientists (obviously)

Hi Kristina! I'm currently studying biology in university and I was wondering some things about your job: - If you work for companies, which are profit-minded, don't they want to hear only good news? (Like; 'there are no special species in the building area' etc.).
- Is the most money still being made through fossil fuel companies? Since I rather not make money through an industry that is one of the main drivers of climate change (and are notorious for their lack in care or even corruption)

1. Yes when I worked in consulting they sure did want good news, doesn’t mean they got it though 😉 In Alberta as a biologist you had a professional license that required you to operate with integrity and be unbiased. Not everyone worked like that but integrity and honest reporting were my values. That’s a really good question.
2. By not working for any companies in any way related for fossil fuels you’re cutting off a ton of your options but it’s still possible! Also take into account that we need people like you with high morals accurately reporting the impacts of oil and gas developments and helping the environment in a Boots on the ground Way! But I currently work out of the oil and gas industry since I moved to British Columbia. There are opportunities in government and the non profit world that might be more in line with your ethics :)
