We make this too, with ground beef added. When my husband and I got married, we discovered that both our moms (one from the north and one from the south) made this same recipe but called it different things. It is my go-to for pot lucks and having company. It really could be a meal!

This has been my aunt's signature dish for every family event my whole life (she also adds ground beef to hers). Her name is Jean, so we call these "Jean's Beans" in our family, and they are DELICIOUS! They're so nice for big family gatherings since it makes a big batch, and they're so easy to pop in a slow cooker to keep hot during a potluck. Definitely a winner of a recipe!

My coworker brings this in a crock pot for work parties. Second shift workers really appreciate a real dinner since we aren't home with our families during dinner hours. It's a side dish that steals the show. So good. Mmmm 😋

We make this, but one thing that we add and will take it over the moon.... browned ground beef!!!! My family calls it "Cowboy Bean Bake", so I guess the beef makes it Cowboy, ha ha ha!! Once, I had a leftover Easter ham and no ground beef, so I threw in the ham, and as you know, it just made it yummy!!!

I add a package of Ekrich maple and brown sugar smokey links cut up into small pieces to mine and cooked them with the brown sugar and opinions to get crispy.
Baked Beans are such a treat!

Hi Me Me. We make this recipe in Indiana and call it sweet and sour baked beans. The only difference is we add chopped green pepper. It is a wonderful change of flavors for baked beans and a big hit. I make baked beans occasionally, sometimes with ground beef. I may try it with bacon or even smoked sausage. I have never used lima or butter beans.
Interesting (and delicious) choices.
When I make mine I add chopped bell pepper, onion and garlic, plus brown sugar, ketchup, mustard and sometimes BBQ sauce. And ground beef or Italian sausage if needed for a main dish.
I am definitely going to try your recipe for a change of pace. Thanks for sharing!

I make the same beans except I add 1\4 to a 1\2 pound of cubed American cheese. Mix the cheese in well. Bake for an hour or microwave for 10 minutes. Stir well and microwave another 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.. Stir mixture to make sure melted cheese is distributed evenly as possible in the beans. Take out of microwave and let set for 10 minutes. Then it's ready to eat. The cheese is a good addition to the beans.

Update: I made it. Best baked beans ever and I'm 54yrs. I know my beans. Question, can I freeze? Just me and the hubby. Lots of left overs and can't really cut recipe in half.
Yes you can. When you reheat, you may need to add a little broth because it gets so thick.😋👍🏻🙂❤️

Okay, this is too funny because not an hour ago, I modified my grocery order to be delivered tomorrow because I got a sudden craving for baked beans! I have everything on hand except the beans. I’m funny about this dish in that I like only one kind of bean, pinto, for it, but a few years ago I made it for a family potluck and I added black beans. It went over very well with everyone except my young nephew. I heard him whispering to his mom when she was dishing his plate and she told me he didn’t want any BECAUSE of those black beans! Lol I told him it was all right, of course. I understand how one thing in a dish can throw me off, too! These look lovely though and I’ll give it a try in the future though I will swap out the dark for white kidney beans because I find them more palatable.

I wish I didn't mind mushy foods. I like greaen beans and wax beans and some jelly beans. After that, beans are off my menu!! 😉😅 I remember as a kid eating around the lima beans in succatash!! 😂
