Tommy definitely has a bundle of talent but he tends to ‘choke’ a lot against the better players and in particular in the final of events. • @got2bjosh

Fritz is the #1 American player & has been for years. His career metrics are head & shoulders above Paul & Tiafoe. Top 5 ranking, Masters & 500 titles, ATP Finals, QFs at three Slams, multiple seasons in the top 10. Paul & Tiafoe don't have the weapons, results, or mental discipline to overtake him. Giron is in his 30s, has had hip replacements, & couldn't even win the easiest 250 draw he'll face before it upgrades to a 500. His career high ranking is just inside the top 50. He'll never reach Top 20. Shelton will overtake the rest of the American players for #2 spot. He's already the #4 ranked next gen player (18-24 y/o).

It's a 250 held at SMU's tennis facility. This is the last year before Dallas is merged with Newport's license, upgraded to a 500, and moved to a much larger venue for pro TX football. The facilities are fine & the tournament won an award in 2019. There's no point in spending a bunch of extra money in the last year. At least they had electronic line calling unlike Marseille which led to unnecessary drama at times.

What can we learn from this? Experience at the higher levels paid off for Paul. He didn't play his best tennis this tournament. Far from it, but he did enough to stay the course & clinch the win. Giron had to red line to claim a set, but it wasn't enough. The biggest error in judgement that Marcost him the match was in not leaving the court when Paul did after the 2nd set. Better yet, he should have talked with his team while Paul was away & then gone to the back of the court to stay warm, keep the arm loose & keep the feet moving.
After clinching the 2nd set, Giron let himself cool off which is what Paul wanted. That pause between the 2nd & 3rd sets was NEVER mean to be a true break. The real champs know this. That let off was a rookie mistake from Giron. The 3rd set started & Giron's energy level was flat, his intensity had dropped & before you could say howdy y'all, the score was 4-1 Paul. It was a wrap.
This was Giron's best chance for an ATP title. The draw was not that competitive & he was in good form. Lost to Shelton in Tokyo which was MUCH harder & now Paul in Dallas. The other 250s are more competitive & in 2025, Dallas will merge with Newport & upgrade to a much more competitive 500. Now in their 30s, Gridiron & Bagdaddy both missed key chances at claiming a maiden ATP title. To be fair, Cordoba was MUCH harder.

Giron's slice a liability unfortunately. He can't keep it from floating.

Is it just me or the luck was really with Tommy Paul this tournament? I recall like at least 3 or 4 let cord from his highlights.

It's a hard court. Blue & orange are classic complementary colors, duh. Time to bone up on color theory.

It's non-linear editing. Not like you're going to witness the teleological unfolding of the full match with all its organic tension, twists, turns, & crucial hinge points.

Tommy and giron didn't played their natural game in the 3rd set....giron played more like a child and gave easy that he was in hurry to lose the title...fixing kind of tennis in the last set...

cant wait to see Paul lose to the world #230 next tournament. Guy decides to try at half the tournaments, maybe not even half.
