Bridgerton Season 3 is finally out and the costume design is... quite the hot topic, so I figured why not do a tier list and do a review of Bridgerton Costume Design worn by Penelope (played by the v slay Nicola Coughlan) and the rest of the cast, while also chatting about some goofs and gafs of the Polin season of the show :)

You’re cool Lucy I really like you you’re my best friend ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
"Hit you like a really slow balloon" crying hjgjhghjg this video was the absolute best
I would really love it if Bridgerton knew how to do casual looks so that the glittery beautiful gowns stood out more. Also, Regency Era had some good casual looks ! That are very different from how they dressed at night !
I totally agree and feel like this season in particular was quite guilty of this - the glittery / beaded night time gowns should feel really special etc but they often feel less special than some of the day looks this season! Or it could just be my preference 😅
5:48 perfectly described how I feel. The yassified regency is very fun, but consistency is still important for it to feel believable in the setting. If you ever feel like it, I’d love to see a Bridgerton inspired lookbook 💞 All the soft pastels are to die forr. Also soo obsessed with Penelope’s nightgown. Very TOP TIER rating
Also lol, where is your cardigan from? It’s so cute🤭💞
Our minds 💆♀️🧠 They made their own world / version of regency, and constraints can be good to play within! Or... not.. for s3 😅
And I'm so sorry I can't be more helpful but the cardigan is thrifted GAP! It is so cute tho 😭
Yesss like they established a beautiful fantasy regency era n we all accepted tht. But then idk what happened this season they went buck wild n werent even following their own rules, silhouettes were all over the place (half of Eloise’s dresses didn’t even have a waist seam they were just long column dresses), makeup was so heavy, pen literally had acrylic nails, and the old Hollywood waves were a choice.
I hated how they tried to give Penelope a snatched waist with the empire waistline dresses.
Well that’s how that era worked. The point of the corsets was to look snatched
@@avrawr1018 I'm sorry but it isn't - there were no corsets in the regency era (which Bridgerton is based on). At least not corsets as we commonly think of them.
The undergarments of the time were called stays and the Regency stays did not go down further than the end of the ribs. They were super soft and flexible - think an extended sports bra - and mostly functioned as breast support (and to push boob up to accentuate/create some of that beautiful cleavage, that was popular for evening gowns).
Even if you wanted to, it would be nearly impossible to tight-lace and 'snatch' the waist with regency stays.
Sorry for the little novel/lecture. I just thought it would be nice to correct a bit of common misinformation.
@@avrawr1018sorry this is incorrect info. The Regency/Napoleonic/Federalist era isn’t what you just described.
This era was emulating what they assumed to be “ancient Grecian vibes” and meant to be relaxed. Nothing is meant to be “snatched.”
There was no snatched waists as dresses were empire waist.
In addition, the stays they wore (not corsets) weren’t as structured as the 18th or later 19th century because again… they’re not snatched. We have literal evidence of this with multiple surviving garments and documents
LITERALLY! I keep telling people this bothers me because like, the only other character who wears dresses fitted at the natural waist is lady featherington. why would pen’s arc fashion wise be to emulate her mother
@@Seshiyou’re mostly correct but not all stays were that short, some went down more like to the waist or hips(depending how you define those fashion-wise)
It's the overuse of highlighter for me this season
the way I cut out a full section of my talking about highlighter 😭 but tbf if we're going to do anachronistic makeup I prefer a glowy cheek to rhinestones 🫣
Oh my god I thought I was the only one whose mind instantly went to Asia o’Hara when the butterflies were let out
maybe it's being into pop culture, maybe it's brain rot!!!
The entirety of S3 was an absolute mess on multiple levels.
The costume designer for S3 was the assistant designer on the previous seasons. There's a video of him and his team talking about the costumes where he mentions that he hates reticules and bonnets so we get the awful mini handbags instead... Cressida is meant to be like a bird trapped in a cage which is why we get her atrocious feathered sleeves, etc. A friend described her outfits as Barbie's greatest hits from the 80s 🤣
I didn't mind the designs in S1 and S2 - there was enough of a Regency silhouette with a dash of modern styling, and a clear distinction between the more casual daytime looks and the evening wear, which I struggled to distinguish this season. It also feels weird when all the background characters are in fairly "normal" Regency outfits/silhouettes compared to the main characters. It's giving Reign level vibes... Too much going on with the fabrics. The sequined fabric just looks cheap. It's like they threw out the book completely. It's a problem when the costumes, makeup and hairstyles begin to overshadow everything else that's happening.
You took the words right out of my mouth + as an Indian the pathetic excuse for "cultural Indian attire" they put poor Kate in was laughable
Nicola said (I think it was her, could have been someone else on the show) that the darker green dress wasn’t supposed to be her best look so your instincts are correct! that’s her attempt at a makeover but when she starts wearing the muted colors after that is when Pen has found her “look” - especially the mint/muted greens
This season felt so odd, like they didn’t trust in how beautiful Nicola was so they gussied her up with millennial makeup. Whereas Daphne and Kate got to be ‘fresh faced debs’.
And when you see all the ton together it looks absolutely ridiculous and cartoonish.
I got that impression as well unfortunately :(
I think season 3 had some of the worst costumes. Like the materials just looked off to me? If that makes sense? Like almost cheaper?
Also I thought this season's costumes looked the least accurate to the time period as well.
Some costumes I still liked, but yeah.
Those "muffs" looked like sad floppy towels.. it was very confusing...
💕
Fransesca's looks are really pulling from 1960s inspo.
Hyacinth in Episode 1 is wearing a dress that Daphne wore in Season 1, which is why it looks more classic Bridgerton. They removed some appliques and changed the sleeves, but it's the same dress.
And Francesa's style is "Leighton Meester in Gossip Girl" IMO. It doesn't work. That tweed spencer jacket with the big flower is so awful.
I was about to take a sip of scalding hot tea when you said “yassified regency” I would’ve spit it everywhere 😂
Daphne also has bangs but we don’t speak about that 🤣
ngl I forgot because we didn't see her this season 😭
The tier list names are so iconic 🤣
first video I've watched of yours, safe to say I'm here to stay
SO glad you mentioned the pitbull song from the carriage scene 💀 😂
That scene I know it's supposed to be so hot and romantic but omg I was CRACKING UP you can't play a pitbull song and not expect me to immediately bust out the club moves 😂
Holy crumbs, how couldn’t like the “ under the willow’ dress. Absolutely gorgeous. The flow through blue to green and highlighting violet looks so amazing on Nicola.
I actually think Cressida’s looks are matching the bridgerton vibe… she’s just 100 years off 😅her looks resemble more the 1900s than the 1800s. So to me she almost looks like a time traveler.
I think her look shows how desperate she's getting to be noticed and take up space.
Cressida time traveler headcanon 😂 maybe sometimes she even travels fictional universes, to Capitol perhaps?
love this vid! brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference
The women’s clothing was all over the damn place this season. Penelope was straight 40s from the waist up after her glow up (including that goofy little sheer neck scarf, that’s very 40s/50s); Francesca’s looks careened from 2000s to Edwardian. The Queen’s wigs are just what Marie Antoinette used to wear, kind of: her little scenes tended to be perched on top rather than in the hollowed out middle of the wig.
It’s distracting; and worse, a lot of the gowns looked cheap. Penelope just looked like she was at prom sometimes.
What makes it stranger is they don’t do this ish with the men’s clothing! The men just wear period clothes and look hot. So when they muck about so much with what the women wear and call it part of the storytelling, it makes me mad.
Oh my god, I also instantly thought of the Asia O'Hara reveal. RIP butterflies.
It's cultural impact can't be understated!!!
I loved Kate's makeup, just not her outfits. I just thought they didn't give high quality at all. The Queen's outfits also felt cheaper than the other seasons but her wigs were fine
could never say no to a fashion tier list! i love all your input and it was a lot of fun to watch 💜💜💜
15:00 how dare you, this deserved top tier. Peak Penelope. Perfect combination of Featherington and future Bridgerton
Thank you for the scrutinity and focus this took to make.
So interesting that you don’t like the puff sleeves or the cameos because technically those two things are very historically accurate. I love your take on the costumes. It’s always so interesting to see how everybody feels about them. I think the first two seasons costumes were so much better than this season, but also I’m coming from the point of view of someone who does recreations of historical attire and I liked how the first two seasons were more historically derived than this season was.
i’m so happy to finally see someone mention that one francesca outfit with the weird sheer appliqué and collar, it took me out of the show SO BAD when i saw it cause it’s super 2010s
Sending love to you Lucy
Ive never watched Briderton. Dont plan to. But i still loved watching this video. Your commentary always SLAYS me!
I've never watched the series, but this video was still so funny and amusing! I love all your content
aw that is such a sweet compliment 😭💖 thank you so much for watching 💕
@@LucyLivinYT it's your shiny, fun ✨personality✨ you're awesome :)
Same! I’ve always been interested in historical fashion, but not lately stickler for it. So its fun seeing what Lucy thinks of these designs, and how she acknowledges “Bridgeton rules” of fashion and how some of the dresses step outside them
What I needed todayy 🌸💗
awww I hope you enjoyed 🥺💗
OMG. 😂 Total dancing around a Dalek. 😂😂😂
Loved this one lucy! so much fun to go through the break down! I know season 4 of emily in paris is coming up in aug & sept if you'd be keen to do that too! (not the best story aha but so fun still!)
Amazing as always ❤
Thank you so much for watching / subscribing, that is so sweet 💗
Girl every Cressida look you think s better I think is worse and vice versa lmao
u kinda look like francesca's original actress ruby stokes :0
THANK YOU the freaking 2012 ass twee Francesca look honestly bothered me more than Cressida’s outfits because her other looks were (mostly) really good. Also the giant sequins. God. I like some of the looks but the big chunky sequin looks were killing me.
7:12 I absolutely adore this dress. Love how dimensional it is
thank u nick wilde from disney's zootopia 🫶
Goes to show I love wacky and weird outfits cuz I like a lot of the outfits. Yes, we are entering into hunger games level costumes but I don’t care.
After seeing all of Cressida's outrageous looks, I actually quite like 41:15. I would've placed it in Nicola Coughlan interview haha 😅
There was a lot going on in this season of Bridgerton.....a lot that did not need to be going on.....a lot that people did not like to be going on.....IYKYK....also love your video's girl ❤
I do agree about Penelope's reveal look!! This so there got on it. Like it's too much but on purpose!!
Omg dalek for sure
I haven’t seen the series even though I should probably watch this season because I’ve liked Nicola since she was in Derry Girls.
I’m still gonna watch your video, spoilers don’t bother me.
oh derry girls is SO good but definitely a different vibe haha 😅 ty for watching 💗
@@LucyLivinYTI’m glad you have seen it and like it!
Not sure why one of the categories is a quote from an unrelated show?
And you put my favorite Pen’s dress (sage green w dark green roses) in mid tier :(
Literally can't stomach the Bridgerton fashions from any season! I agree that movie period costumes don't have to be perfectly authentic but the B. fashions are so bad and tacky and in-your-face anachronistic that I feel like it is insulting to its viewers, who are predominantly women. It's like it is talking down to women and giving us garbage that is obviously wrong because we're stupid and just want to look at fancy dresses and hot guys. Actually makes me mad. Hate it so much.
PS: Funnily enough, fur muffs and various types of shawls are actually period authentic, but I think they were definitely interpreted badly in the show's designs.
Francesca Bridgerton story in season three
Lady Danbury is mothering
I'm writing as watching and loving your reaction.
The muffler was cut vering real-life broken wrist
I may not agree with everything but this was so fun!! I enjoyed your perspective. 👌🏽 Excellent!
40:32 that's a crime
I agree with you on the very last Penelope look during the Featherington ball. It's just bad and the hair is so weird looking. I really couldn't care less about historical accuracy but this was a step too far for me
The gloves this season reminded me of wrinkly elephant skin legs.
"When everyone is super, no one is."
Was way overkill and distracting, couldn't appreciate the best looks because it was sensory overload! Season 2 struck the right balance of semi-accurate silhouettes and hairstyles with modern fabrics and colours ✌️
I'm starting to think I'm insane. I loved the costuming for this season. They were so romantic...the colors worked so well. They were bright and outlandish to reflect the Featherington side of the love story. It felt like as Penelope learned more about herself and accepted herself---more people of the ton started to dress like her in bright colors.
The one that I absolutely cannot agree with you is the Engagement Party dress. I loved her hair and the hair clips so much. Colin told her that he loved seeing her hair cascade over her shoulders & girl never once forgot about it.
I think Eloise really needs to lose the bangs soon. If not next season, which will most likely be Benedict's, then in her own. They don't suit her and I feel like they're meant to make her loook more childish. They're the first thing that should go in the glow -up, seriously.
I'm a bit sad you missed some of the Kate looks! And I would have liked more Francesca too.
considering she's meant to be 18/19, and the actress is almost 35, i think it's a good thing for the bangs to make her look younger.
@@CosimasNiehaus Yes, absolutely. I'm just dsaying they should get rid of them for her season. She is, after all, growing up.
I’m tired of pretending Violet Bridgerton isn’t hot af. I’m 20. But it doesn’t matter
I agree with most of your rankings but I hated almost all of Kate's looks. It's almost like they were trying to make her look bad on purpose. 34:25 was definitely very beautiful but the dress at 40:26 was criminal 😭the hairstyle was also atrocious
I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to disagree with you about the ombre fabrics. I also really love the sheer fabrics. I feel like they have free creativity I'm these kind of shows. Historically yes they wouldn't have had sheer sleeves but I love what they break some of the rules and reimagine fashion and create the most beautiful dresses.
I also love Disney live action costumes except for Belle and live action Snow White. Live action Cinderella's dress was stunning. Disneys costumes are beautiful. It is so crazy how so much detail goes into the costumes, as well as Bridgerton. I thought the queens wig although not purposeful to the plot was super cool. That aside the costumes in this show are visually stunning. I also like the hair accessories. Lol There's nothing wrong with accessorizing. I like Penelopes hair as well. Cressida has one of the prettiest colors but is super overstated and overwhelmed by all of her hairstyles and dresses although I really liked her red dress.
Not trying to be mean, but it takes you forever to get going. A little less setup, or perhaps edit the script down a bit
lady tilley has the worst costumes tbh. and then comes cressida with the giant poof sleeves as second awful…. I know this has been said before but Francesca’s actress really does look like an instagram model they should have kept ruby.
I didn't need some stupid disgusting scene in a video about costumes.
What scene?
Complain with context.
I disagree with some of the pen rankings but thats cause I absolutely loved almost everything she wore but i also disagree with some the kate looks👀 i love your ranking tho i wish you including pens blue nightdress after the wedding and also her true final look where we meet the babies i actually loved the green on her😭🩷
