Wow. How can I have lived my whole life without having heard her excellent voice? She deserves the abundant praise I read online (just a few minutes ago), but somehow she managed to sail under my radar until now. My loss! She's a favorite with me from now on.
I still get shivers when I hear Barbara Sing "Stars." I don't believe anyone other than the incredible Janis Ian have made "Stars" one of the most thought provoking songs ever written.
How does she do it? How does Babara Cook find the perfect interpretation of someone's song? Her gifts are prodigious..and I love them, and I weep from their beauty and their skill and their gifts....I adore her...and I've seen her so many times .a...and I always cry during the performance...what a genius she is
Wow she LOOKS fabulous, not that it matters that much. What does matter is how she sounds and what she sings, and this was one of the greatest matches between material and her luminous talent. Just stunning, almost beyond belief. I was lucky enough to have seen her perform not too long after the relase of the As of Today album. She sang Billy Joel's New York State of Mind, which she never recorded. She also sang this and Candlelight, both by Janis Ian. Thanks for posting!!
Amazing voice and stunning interpreter of a lyric. When I was younger, I found a used album in a record store. It was Barbara Cook's album Here And Now. The album is beautiful and I got hooked. But this simple story song is what made me adore her gifts. I've been seeing her ever since, Heard all her great songs but this remains the song that changed the way I looked at any singer after. She is a singing treaure. Bravo, sweet lady of song. Thank you for posting this gem.
She is the real thing. A clear and true voice. The classic stage delivery and presence with appropriate pitch and volume. She just opens her mouth and out it comes. Thanks for this.
I have followed Barbara Cook since I saw her at the Carousel Room at the Copley Plaza in Boston. I've gone to every concert I could and have listened to every recording - own them all. She is absolutely the best in every way, I hope someone posts Ain't love Easy and SIng a SOng With Me. Thank you, Mitch for this posting Barbara and with the incomprable Wally at the piano - superb!
I wish this whole concert was available. I saw her do this concert in person in a small theatre in the LA area (at UCLA) and then remember the broadcast. Sadly, I did not have VCR then to record. This truly captured her at the peak of her form as a concert/cabaret artist (and she had slimmed a little and looked great as well).

Astounding, singular artistry. She is one of a kind.

I saw Barbara Cook sing this in London, it was flawless.

Upon hearing of the great lady's death, this was the first of her performances to which I turned. Sublime and transcendent.
Wow, what can one say. This song really touches close to home I think. She sings it like she feels every single word.
incredible
BY FAR my favorite thing Ive ever heard her sing
that was absolutely divine
I was lucky to see this amazing lady in concert in London in the 1980s - still remember it like it was last week.

One of the greats, and what a career!
Fantastic...this is 'holy grail' stuff, and I thank you for sharing it with us.

Gorgeous
Wow! This was a concert at KCET in L.A., around 1987. I know. I was there!
She makes love to a song.
RIP Ms. Cook.
Bless this Stars share.
goosebumps
@GuinnevereB Did you see the tribute to her on the Kennedy Center Honors last week? If not, look it up here on TH-cam.
@booglas69 Now we have competing claims that it was a concert in Hartford, in LA and at the Kennedy Center.
Ah....her voice is like spun glass : )
