- Tony award winner Dorothy Loudon sings a wonderful medley of Sondheim's "Losing My Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy". Be sure to watch through to the end to see how she mixes the two songs together.
We made the mistake of posting these as two separate videos on our old BestArts channel, so we're glad to bring them back together - as they belong.
This video is an excerpt from the highly recommended 1992 concert DVD "Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall".

I was at this performance. Hung out in the foyer of the box office all morning. Finally a cancellation came in, so I got to to. I was 21 with my whole life in front of me. Now, I just turned 53. Life is really something.
Keep up the ‘good living.’ If you were only 21 and knew enough to hang around to get into see this monster artist, you were one smart little cookie. I would imagine it’s a quality that has held you in good stead.
What an immense talent she was. Capable of breaking your heart in the beginning, cracking you up with just glance, and using an amazing voice to tell the story of the lyrics
I saw this for the first time when I was 13 or so, and have loved her since. This performance is one of my favorites!!
*at the beginning *a glance
This mash-up is a master class in how to give a performance. Dorothy Louden committed to it from the first note to the last...This should be seen, analyzed, dissected, and taught to anyone who thinks about entering the world of musical theatre.
Your absolutely right !!!!
Her eyes say so much.
Totally correct, 6:46guy.
@@Imagio-jw6js I showed this video to a friend of mine and she called the performance a "slow burn" - it starts off nice and slow and then the frenetic energy begins to pick up until it truly is a "crazy" pace and explodes all over the stage and audience which in turn makes the mashup change back to Losing My Mind so much funnier... This performance is perfection....
@@646guy great description, she is phenomenal...
I visit her regularly, its like I'm losing my mind.
You’re not alone! ❤
This is when a actor singer artist understands the poetry of the lyrics and then uses it. I just had an out
Of body and mind experience. Wow
GOD, THIS WOMAN IS SO AMAZING!!!!! Dorothy Loudon, you are a legend and I will never forget you!
It seldom gets better than this. The genius of Stephen Sondheim interpreted by the incomparable Dorothy Loudon. Words can never truly describe either talent. Wow!
My high school music teacher used to regale some of us about the times he spent with Ms. Loudon. You could tell by his far away look that he looked back on those days as her close friend as really great times in his life. She must have been a wonderful friend to have, such a terrific sense of humor.
In the many dozens of times I've watched this, as well as her superlative FIFTY PERCENT, I've often wondered why Dorothy Loudon wasn't a huge star. I don't know the answer but I do know that every would-be exponent of musical theatre in the world needs to watch this pure masterclass in the art of selling songs. And when I say 'selling' I mean inhabiting them, making them your own. And entertaining your audience across myriad moods and tempos and characterisations. Miss Louden, I bow down to you.
The fabulous Ms Loudon came from a time when you had to be truly talented, and want to actually put effort into your career. Getting on stage was the goal, not instant fame. I love the TRUE divas that have graced the stages of theateres around the world, not the posers that have to be remixed, overdubbed, and half naked in order to sell a cd these days
…truer and truer 14 years later.
I found Ms Louden this year, she was unknown in Britain. She was singing "50percent" and she amazed me. I rushed to Amazon to find her albums and was amazed to find she never recorded any. If You Tube lever does another thing I will always be grateful for letting me see just a few of her performances.
She recorded several, actually - they’re mostly jazz & cabaret standards. She was primarily known as one of the greatest comedic stage actresses of the latter half of the twentieth century. She was a tour de force all her own. There’s clips on TH-cam of her performing “Take It All Off” from Jerry’s Girls that you NEED to hunt down. I don’t think she ever got anything other than raves, no matter what she did.
The sheer force of her talent and charisma was such that whenever she was given a solo song, she would more often than not stop the show cold. She was the first replacement Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd - Sondheim absolutely raves about her performance in his autobiography. She had the audience eating out of her hand as the title character’s mother in Lolita, My Love; when she died following her big number at the end of Act 1, the audience, and the show, never recovered. (Both of those performances are on TH-cam as well).
I have watched it a gazillion times now and I can't get enough of this. what a woman, what a talent.
holy shit this is amazing... the orchestration, arrangement, and of course, the performer. What is going on today that compares to this?
Paul M nothong come close to this, that was talent then!
Nothing. This is just the standard.
Very, very, very few could sing this... melodies that are barely hummable... AND... TO CHARACTERIZE IT with an orchestration...just out there naked with those songs. Loudon's deadpan EXPRESSIONS just iced the cake.... probably the hardest 6 minutes of her life. RIP
speechless really. what a marvellous actress! one of the few stage performers who can bring the acting and the singing into such a wonderful marriage.
Best version I heard so far! Hats off Miss Loudon r.i.p.
Wonderful. I mean I want to give her a standing ovation every time I watch it. Fabulous, extraordinary, marvelous and all those other over used words but I really mean it.
She's just so mind-blowingly good.
God love stage actors. they keep it real!
Some performances defy description. There is so
much brilliance going on here. Absolutely no one could
have pulled this off but Dorothy Loudon.
This is an absolute MASTERCLASS performance. My god it’s amazing!! 🥰
This WHOLE evening was one superlative performance after another.
she knitted them together so well, and looked like she was having an emotional breakdown while doing it.
saw this when it aired. loved it, thanks for posting.
When you've gotten yourself entangled with a Narcissist... THIS is what happens!
And, Ms. Loudon sings it *beautifully*!
One of the most brilliant moments of live theater in recent times. Finding a way to marry the comedic and dramatic elements of these two songs is the definition of genius.
I feel like ive watched this masterpiece multiple times throughout the years and it still amazes me....how fitting for 2020 though everyones losing their minds....
I remember watching this Sandheim tribute live on PBS as a kid... Incredible i still know the lyrics. I cant even tell you how many times i watched this... Thank you for uploading it!
Vanessa S I taped it on VHS and watched it all the time. Among the first clues to my parents that I was a ....drag.
Amazing performance! Touching, funny, crazy. She pulls it all together beautifully.
This is one of the best performances I've ever seen. I have watched it many times, and I feel so many emotions when I watch it - want to laugh, want to cry, want to laugh, want to cry. SHEER GENIUS. It makes me want to be a performer and an audience member. Her facial expressions are BRILLIANT. And then her voice and the weight of the composition. BRAVO, BRAVO!!!!
Absolutely, wonderfully, incomparably brilliant.
How do you Top that.
Not often you can say a Broadway legend but here is one!! Just amazing xxx thank u do much for sharing this video xx
one of the most underrated actresses SHE WAS GREAT!!! Touching one moment and so funny the next
Actually she was always praised for her talents so sorry she was not underrated at all.
THE DIAMOND MISS DOROTHY LOUDON IS ONE OF THE LEADING FIGURES IN BROADWAY COMMUNITY AND IT'S N-O-T UNDERRATED !!!
IT'S ONE OF THE BEST PART IN THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES !!!
She absolutely sold both parts of the medley. I was in tears hearing and seeing the emotion on her face in the first part, and then was in hysterics at the second section.
Tony award winning actress, definitely not underrated. Perhaps you just don’t know her work.
THE MAGNIFICENT MISS DOROTHY LOUDON !!!
A TRUE AND AUTHENTIC LEGEND !!!
Tears to laughter back to tears in a matter on 2 lines. She was a master.
Don't know about La Loudon - MY ignorance - but this is the BEST version ever. This is how is should be done.
Dorothy was PHENOMENAL because her acting is so simple and yet SO indicative of what Sondheim is all about - INNER LIFE!
One of a kind. Brilliant entertainer!
Not only did she " NAIL' the songs , as she always did , but she made the dress too !
This is a genius performance! I knew very little about Dorothy Loudon before stumbling upon this, now I can't get enough of her! Mashing up two of my fave songs from the stage. Thank you for uploading :-)
Phenomenal performance!
This might be the greatest performance of all time. Completely captivating from start to finish. I hate the way that "trained" voices these days all seem to sound the same. Dorothy Loudon was in a class of her own. This is the gold standard. Every nuance was perfect.
OUR PRECIOUS MISS DOROTHY LOUDON !!!
One of my favorite medley....
One of the best performances you’ll ever see!! 🥰🥰🥰
What an incredibly stunning performance!!!
The sun comes up, I think about you
The coffee cup, I think about you
I want you so, it's like I'm losing my mind
The morning ends, I think about you
I talk to friends, I think about you
And do they know it's like I'm losing my mind?
All afternoon doing every little chore
The thought of you stays bright
Sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor
Not going left, not going right
I dim the lights and think about you
Spend sleepless nights to think about you
You said you loved me, or were you just being kind?
Or am I losing my mind?
I want you so, it's like I'm losing my mind
Does no one knows it's like I'm losing my mind
All afternoon doing every little chore
The thought of you stays bright
Sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor
Not going left, not going right
I dim the lights and think about you
Spend sleepless nights to think about you
You said you loved me, or were you just being kind?
Or am I losing my mind?
Oh I thought you'd have the other lyrics interspersed.
Remember Miss Loudon from the old "Gary Moore Show", on TV...she was a phenomenon of Stage Craft, then. How she could pop in-and-out of characters and flow with the different skits, never missing a beat, or the sense of believablity. This is a Master Class performance that should be shown to ALL students of theatrical acting, whether drama or musical, this skill is a genesis to both.
I'm not often moved to tears, but this sure did it! This is what committing to the music is all about! By the way, I've never laughed so hard at a video either!
Dorothy Loudon was the absolutely perfect conduit for Stephen Sondheim's brilliance with these two songs. The insight Sondheim had into the human heart, mind, and soul is just limitless.
Stunning, stunning, stunning! Now this is a performer! Love her! :)
you articulated this SO well...so many emotions going on while watching this. As I was laughing out loud I suddenly thought "oh my god, wait a second, this is serious" and that it the GENIUS of this performance. So deep. also, just watched your video of "It's Today" and it is sooooo good.
They don't make them like her anymore! Brilliant !
She was an extraordinary and unique talent. Thank god we have these videos.
This is sheer brilliance
She definitely did this medley !
Every soul in that theater was so blessed by the Lord above to have been there.
Fuck you! Bringing religion into it.
Gary Clement what a lovely comment. Ignore the comment from the miserable troll
Oh my, unbelievable. Fantastic.
This is the best piece of theatre I have ever seen.
My love to Dorothy Loudon. X
Greatest show!! Thank you Miss Loudon.
Superb performance!
Simply stunning
Wow. How have i never heard of her. That's just wonderful.
I love how she deliberately doesn't milk the crap out of the emotions of Losing My Mind so we immediately notice something is off.
She's the Best.
I remember this from the 1990’s PBS broadcast . It was hilarious and well done and years later it still stands as quite brilliant . Her voice was rather rough by this point but it only added to Loudon’s maniacal expression to these Sondheim numbers . So funny !!

Bravissima! A fabulous melding of two Sondheim songs to come through with a truly brilliant performance of a new composition. Bravissima!!!
Can’t imagine anyone else doing this half as well - she’s incredible.
A true legend! A master of her craft for sure
Fabulous performance, true to both songs in their originals, and coming up with a new meld of her own, deeply creative and wonderful in itself. Bravissima Magistra!

This Lady is Number One on the list of the Greatest Singers. Dorothy Louden
That gloriously beautiful head of hair ain’t hurting anything neither! Seriously, what a completely satisfying performance to watch……over and over and……
Just Brilliant !!!
I love her. I was fortunate to see her in a non singing role in Noises Off where she was absolutely historical at the Martin Beck in 1984.❤❤❤ I liove seeing footage of her doing musical theater. And as the original Miss Hanagan from the late 70s Annie.
Dorothy Loudon was one of the few treasures that could do both sad and funny with such conviction
This is great, amazing woman,so talented xx
