Basil never just randomly kisses his wife. He was doing that because he was trying to be super nice to her to cover up the fact that was taking out a large sum of money for Lord Melbry's check but it just came off as awkward and weird. So his wife was like "what are you doing? Well don't." 😂 The show was trying to highlight how much of a cranky "old couple" they were where random affection is strange and out of place.
