    Gonna be honest I didn't expect such a good video from a dude in flip flops and capris but I'll be bookmarking this for my future lean to project because there's a lot of good info to take in and I'll need to watch it more than once.

    Great work man. Looks great. I love seeing how you interact with your employees. I’m so used to seeing the boss yelling and cursing at his employees. You speak to them calm and with respect and did a heck of a job. Keep up the good work. Love the video.

    This is the kind of video I wish I could find all the time. When I thought "I wonder what it takes to build a lean-to onto my shop" and find a video of this quality. Perfect length, perfectly explained, great quality. No life story, no long dumb introduction, just the good stuff. Thanks!

      Thank you Dan, i do believe so as well. i get attacked a lot on here about how poorly i built it, people saying it won't last. Yet, its still there and since been closed in and looks wonderful still. In fa t ive been contacted by the same homeowner to build one on the other side as well!!!!

      when i started this company i wanted to do things a little differently than how i was done by other bosses. that was to include pay,saying thank you for their time away from their families and vactaion pay(which is un heard of for construction workers where im from). i think we are accomplishing those things and thats why i have such good people working with me.
      One of the hardest things to do we've dicovered is being a consistent part of all the crews day each day as we grow. Filming a complete video without interference is also super hard. I do love building and actually being with the guys lets them know that i know what they go through and lets us connect on a level much more personal than if you are making money or not! Hopefully we can continue to grow in experience and execution to bring quality videos on a regular schedule. Thanks again for watching

    Great instructional step by step with material list! It might be a good idea to fill the holes in the ground with a layer of large gravel rocks so the posts can shed any water that can accumulate in the posts over the years and cause rotten posts. I built huge deck when I was 22 and thanks to Bob Villa lol... showing this method, it still stands today and I'm 58. No rotten posts. This is the best video out there today sir. Thank you!

    I’m pleased that there aren’t many comments/arguments about your method of setting the 6x6’s in dry concrete or using the bricks at the bottom of the hole. Here in East Texas there’s plenty of moisture in the soil year round (to set dry concrete) but always everyone argues about gravel or no gravel at the base of the post. I always have used about 6” of gravel or drainage rock and never have had a rot problem. The biggest issue you didn’t address was your reason for leaving the top of the concrete 6 inches below the surrounding soil. I would consider that to be the weakest link since it gives water a place to pool at the most critical spot.

      I drill 5"×3/8" metal tipped screws through my ledger and threw both sides of the existing studs. It would be even better to pretrial a 5/8" hole and send a 1/2"×6" bolt at each stud with a nut and washer. If you use 3/8" screw option I would put 3 each stud. Thanks for watching!!!!!

    I finish off the post holes by digging a 12" sq at the top of the post angled to the post on all four sides, about 8 inches deep. Then overfill the hole with concrete and trowel smooth, angled away from the post on all sides. Results, water will run away from the post, dirt won't contact the post near the surface and trimming the grass around the post is eliminated.

      my mom lives in a house with that exact scenario! and the drain is in the center at the bottom of the stairs. i think thats a great idea, you'll be rerouting the rain entirely and not even letting it get to that area.. The bird mouth looks like it’s more than one third of the way.
    A crucial aspect to remember when cutting a birdsmouth is to ensure the structural integrity of the rafter. As a rule of thumb, never remove more than one-third of the depth of the rafter. Overcutting might compromise the strength and reliability of the rafter, leading to potential roofing problems in the future.

      @firstnforemost7283  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks Don!
      1. we set the posts 24 inches deep.
      2. i prefer mixed concrete if strength is my main priority, however dry packed is easier and all that was necessary for this job!!!
      @heymaker
      thanks for the comment and questions!!!
      1. bees and wasps are definitely a battle, especially where a building is barely used.
      but the best way is to completely close off the fascia. i actually did a newsletter on this exact problem that goes up on my community tab this friday the 9th of june
      2. the concrete will be cured in approximately 24 hours

    I’m building a roof of the shed like you are, but it’s for a chicken run. Now I planned on taking it from the shed and attaching it to the privacy fence instead of installing post like you did. Our shed is a big shed that anchored with large augers, the kind you might find single or double wide trailers. Now is that a bad idea, should I run a couple of post up against the fence to where the roof isn’t attached to the fence?

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      great question!! depending on the spacing between the posts of your fence, you may be able install a beam from post to post on your existing fence that could suffice just fine. these typs of roof designs with metal panels have a very low weight per sq. foot . thank you for the comment and for watching!!! have a great day.

    I’m thinking about doing this above my deck and was curious if it’s loud underneath the metal roof and if so what can I do to lessen the sound? Best video I’ve seen on a lean to. Great freakin job man.

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for watching! I'm assuming you could try some type of dampener like what's use in cars for stereo speakers or even maybe 3/4" interlocking pads from like a exercise flooring to lessen it. Maybe even batten insulation in some type of lowered ceiling that you could maybe install a vynil ceiling on. Ki d of like a dropped soffit or commercial ceiling. On interior walls we sometimes get requests to insulate certain interior walls to help block sound. It works inside so It may work outside as well!

  • @shadyfieldhomestead1974

    One more question. Do you recommend some type of moisture tape when attaching a lean to roof to the shed? I'll be using treated 4x4 post that will run along side the shed as close as i can get them. I am wondering about putting moisture construction tape in between the post and the shed? Also, would I be better off having a metal roof with just framed in roof or using OSB and putting shingles? On the other roof I recently built I used plywood and shingled the roof. I am wondering which is more cost effective? I'm also thinking just putting up a metal roof will cut down on the amount of time

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The materials were approximately $990 for the metal roofing ,trim and screws. The wood and concrete at this time was like 600 and there were some costs for the bolts. All in all, materials were a total near $1800. The cost of lumber has come down since this video was shot.

    My father in law had a concrete business that all he could find to work was Mexicans… he taught them the trade, then they left and started competing against him on bids😂. It got to the point he just had to stop. He wasn’t mad at them because it’s hard work and he respected them. After he died they all came to his funerals, and anytime I need any work done they are quick to come and help.

    WOW!! I love videos like this and have not seen one give so much explanation of details. Wonderful!!!
    I am wanting to do something on a little smaller scale to the side of my house...one story, asbestos roofing.
    My question is...should the pitch of the lean-to be equal to the pitch of the roof in order for water run-off from the roof to not wash backwards onto the wall of the house during a downpour if the lean-to roof pitch is too shallow?
    That was pretty horrible stated and hope you can decipher what in the world I just asked.
    Thanks so much. Jesus bless.

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you for watching Miss Sandra!!!!
      you do not have to make your new roof the same pitch as the house. You pitch should ideally be steeper than 12 degrees. A 4/12 pitch which is close to 19 degrees is required if using asphalt shingles. As far as the blowing rain, there is a way to cut Z flashing against the existing structure along with silicone that will protect you from blowing rain!!!

    I just want something small to put my riding mower and push mower under, so it's not in the weather. Great video, but I think it's a bit overkill for what I need, lol.
    I have a brick exterior do you think one 2x6x10 would be good enough for the ledger on the brick, or should i go with a 2x8x10. Also instead of using 6x6 posts, could i use 4x4 or 4x6 to attach the roof?
    Just trying to see what a scaled down version would be.

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes sir absolutely on both of your choices. Especially, since you must want to park your mower under there. It doesn't have to be as wide as this one was. If you use 4x4's I would recommend some type of beam to post connector, to protect from uplift in a storm or high winds. If you use a 4x6, you can still notch the post as to put some bolts through it and into the beam. If you have any troubles with your build feel free to reach out and I'll do what I can to help! Thank you for watching

      Awesome, I live in Florida so I plan to use hurricane ties to the ends and I planned on drilling straight through the 4x4s and using bolts to hold the 2x6 in place.

    Great video!! Thanks for sharing. Is there a certain pitch or angle that the lean to has to have?? The ledger board is higher up than the exterior braces. How do you figure that height?? Sorry for the question, but I don't know how that part works when building one of these.

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you Coplock for watching!!! And for the comment. I would recommend at least a 12°-15° pitch. That would also depend on where you live as well. As far as beam height relative to the ledger can be seen by using a line level,a level with a straight board the length of the building or a transom. Ideally you would have 3inches of fall per foot of length. You can work from the beam or the legder whichever of the two you are most confident in, install that first. If you install the ledger first, multiply 3 inches times the length of the span. So let's say your span is 12 feet long. You would then hook the top of the ledger and mark down 36" and place a nail or screw or a mark with your pencil is fine as well. Then from that mark use a string line or chalk line with a three inch line level attached to it from your mark towards the posts. Pull the line tight and mark one post when the level is centered. From there you can then run the same line level from that post to the other posts. That mark would then be the top of your beam minus the thickness of your rafter. So if your rafter was a 2x6 you would subtract and additional 5 inches or 4 1/2 (to leave a nice bird's mouth). And then make your notches for you beam from there downwards..... If you have your beam set first because thats more comfortable for you, then run a stringline towards the building from the top of your beam and when level place a mark on the existing structure.from there measure upwards the 36 inches plus the thickness of you rafter and mark that as the top of you ledger, and pop a line across the direction of your ledger. Sorry for the long response but im glad you asked, thats what we are here for!!!
      If you have any more queztions feel free to ask anytime. Thank you for taking your time to write us. Make sure to check oit our DIY deck video and DIY ceramic tile as well.

    Hello. Great video! I want to put something similar up on my deck. Maybe you can help me with a few questions…. How much weight can the roof hold and what metal panels did you use? I live in New Jersey so there will be heavy wet snow and ice on it.
    Thank you…

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  ปีที่แล้ว

      great question and thank you for watching. the metal roof panels were purchased at a local hardware store and are consistent in thickness with normal building materials if not thicker than most metal roofing on new residential homes in my area. Being that you have expected snow load i would pour concrete footings to about 4 inches above ground and "beef" up the sub-frame of the roof to help with the potential load. the metal will withstand the snow load but a subframe built at 16" on center with 2 foot on center spacing on perlin blocking will give you all the strength you need to build a long lasting lean-to, even in New Jersey!!!!

  • @Theferg1

    Great info and video!! Let me ask instead of pouring concrete around the 6x6 post could not just dig a two by two foot by 2 ft hole. Fill it full of concrete and then put the post on top of it after the concrete drys? That away the concrete don't eat the post away?

    • @firstnforemost7283

    I need to build something like this over my patio and deck that run together but I need to attach from the slope side, only have 8' in height to the overhang and told I need to go up on the roof and attach above the outside wall to make sure I have enough room for the proper slop and plenty of head room on the outside beam.

    Any insight would be appreciated!

    • @firstnforemost7283
      @firstnforemost7283  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You were told correctly. Going up the roof a little ways will provide you with a better slope while being able to raise the beam up high enough to not feel crowded. being that you are going 20' out i would recommend you go 6 feet up the roof to get at least a 3/12 pitch. you will have to flash the gables to ensure no water enters but i think you will appreciate the look you end up with. if you want send me some pictures of your area or any questions and I'll do what i can to help.
