  • Coverage of the Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace booth at Indo Pacific 2022; the international maritime exposition in Sydney, Australia. Australia approved in April the procurement of Naval Strike Missile (NSM) for its in-service Anzac-class frigates and Hobart-class destroyers.
    =====================
    Representatives from the company shared more details on this new NSM contract and what makes this next generation anti-ship missile unique. They also mentioned the StrikeMaster project which is a truck-mounted NSM launcher. We also discussed Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace's activities in the Indo Pacific region as well as in Australia.

    Nice report Xavier, well done on highlighting the connections and commonality between NSM and how it can be used with the FDC of the NASAMS II systems we are bringing online and the potential for the Kongsberg CDS.
    Now all we need to do is confirm JSM for the internal carry weapon of choice for the F-35's 👍

    nsm fitted on bushmasters are a wonderful idea you could drive them on containers ships land them on islands giving large range of defense. We could build them in Australia easily under license for Kongsberg defense.

    The dutch navy is also switching to kongsberg to replace the aging Harpoon system ,As they are going to build new frigates and update their larger frigates . It makes a lot of sense of having a European build system.

      No, the tender is still ongoing.

      Lockheed Martin AGM-158C LRASM
      Rafael SEA BREAKER

      If that was true the government would have selected the Saab-Damen submarine a year ago during the selection fase and moved on. There is a high chance that the TKMS 212CD E will be selected because of the low risk and integration with the german armed forces in the future.
      For the harpoon replacment. Yes the NSM is the favorite at the moment, but the NSM is limited in capabilities. There is a growing voice for sea serpent/gabriel V missile

    Great purchase I just think the LRASM missile made more sense for us 🇦🇺. Nonetheless am happy with NSM, the harpoon was last decade.

    • @MattWeberWA
      @MattWeberWA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed on LRASM for most applications: truck launched and air launched absolutely. Only advantage I see to NSM is that maybe someone decided that LRASM was too heavy to put on the Arafuras, and there's some not yet public plan to get these things into the RAN and then eventually put box launchers on the OPVs.
      That plus the ANZACs are already damn close to their designed weight limit. Swapping the harpoon for LRASM like for like (i.e. eight for eight missiles) would add over ten tonnes to the ship, while NSM will lower the weight a little bit. It's not huge, but it matters.

    • @Nathan-ry3yu
      @Nathan-ry3yu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattWeberWA most ships can handle 200 tonnes over its weight limit without slowing them down. It's just not recommended for long term basis. But some countries still do it and didn't make any difference

    • @MattWeberWA
      @MattWeberWA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nathan-ry3yu Fair, but with things like SEA 5014 towed array sonar coming, there are clearly plans to keep adding capability (and weight) to the ANZACs. Don't get me wrong, I don't think weight was a decisive factor, but I do think it was a tick in the NSM's column rather than the LRASMs.

    "Hi everyone..."? Even if he's speaking to a live audience, it is gauche for a compere to say 'hi everyone'. That immediately de-personalizes them. More so on solo media such as radio or video. Almost all viewers are solo. So get some media training and say 'Hello, and welcome to...' etc. Check the video "TV Presenter Training, Top Tips and Hacks" at 99 seconds.

    The USA should have never bought into the NSM system. Boeing was going to build a Harpoon ER, which met all of the US Military's requirements and cost less. Boeing was even going to sell upgrades to the existing harpoons for 25% of what the NSM cost new.
    After LRASM goes to full production, it will be a cost competitor with NSM and LRASM has a 1,000 pound warhead, which is about 4 times the size of NSM at 270 pounds.
    It is also likely that the LRASM will get an ER model in the future, which could have similar capabilities and range as the JASSM ER, and would be double the NSM's range.
    Amazing how corrupt the system is and how much the USA has become reliant on other countries' equipment. No doubt the USA will find itself in a war these "allies" disapprove of and we will be cut off from their overpriced junk.

    • @rowaystarco
      @rowaystarco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is the system corrupt? If anything it's US companies like Boeing that's corrupt. Making shoddy and overprices equipment. Boeing Starliner is a flop, Boeing 737 MAX was a massive mess that killed civilians. Not sure if I trust their military division much.

    • @willw8011
      @willw8011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rowaystarco Boeing's Starliner is going to launch a crew later this year to the ISS. ... what a failure!
      Interestingly, the Boeing 737 Max only had two problems, and those were in bongo bongo land, where pilots are not trained very well. The FAA forced Boeing to change its software a little bit and forced airlines to train their crews better.
      BTW, I don't even like Boeing, because every time I applied to work there... I was not diverse enough for them.
      The US Government picks these foreign companies due to wanting to prop-up their defense industries. Funny, Euros do not do the same and the Euros always steal US technology too.

    • @rowaystarco
      @rowaystarco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willw8011 Boeing Starliner is years behind schedule and is way more expensive to launch than SpaceX with their Falcon 9 and Dragon. I would claim the higher cost of ULA (Boeing owned in part and Boeing is a failure alone.) Also good job in exposing yourself as a racist. The fact is that Boeing cut corners, and innocents paid with their lives.
      That argument is pure BS. Norway the maker of NSM/JSM has bought the very expensive F35 planes from America. Finland and Denmark going for F35 too.

    • @willw8011
      @willw8011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rowaystarco LMAO telling the truth is wacist, now.
      Boeing's Harpoon ER was the better missile: longer range, bigger warhead, existing hardware on US Navy ships, and existing Harpoons could be upgraded for 1/4 the price of the NSM. The USA also built LRASM, which is much better than NSM. The USA could have built a smaller LRASM, which would be the same size as NSM, if it wanted to. Those are also facts.
      Almost everything is years behind schedule, so what. Tell me about the crewed spacecraft the EU or bong bong land ever made?
      The USA should have never sold the F-35 to any other country, but those countries were begging to buy the F-22 or some other stealth aircraft. As it turns out, 3 countries in the F-35 program stole the tech: British, Japan, South Korea. The British shared the ill-gotten tech with the other Euros, so now the Germans and French have it too and will build "their own" 5th gen sheath fighter. Funny, countries that never built stealth aircraft are just going to jump in and build a 5th gen stealth fighter... and all of those look like the F-22/ F-35.
      NATO and our so called alliance with Europe provides zero benefit to the USA. Europeans only seek Eurocentric trade, defense and technology "sharing" agreements. Leeches and thieves are not friends.

    • @rowaystarco
      @rowaystarco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willw8011 Btw. Your precious Boeing is using European tech in their weapons too, like the next gen 155mm artillery shells like Ramjet 155. American space tech was based on the work done by engineers in Nazi Germany and even designed by those very engineers and rocket scientists. SpaceX was founded and driven forward by a South African/Canadian immigrant.
