Interesting theory about learning a language activating the parts of your brain that are used for playing music, but … I think your existing piano playing skills added to you starting to learn the Polish language actually made you start channelling Chopin 😅
Masz słuch muzyczny, więc z wymową pójdzie Ci szybko. Ogólnie widać, że Ci zależy i wg. mnie bardzo szybko zrobisz postępy. Konsekwencja, regularnosć i upór to klucz do sukcesu. Trzymam kciuki, kibicuje Tobie i jestem ciekaw następnych filmów z nauki. (polish is not that hard :) ) Pozdro.
Polish is one tough language, many native Poles don't speak it properly (yeah, I'm a native speaker). Your progress in just 7 days is impressive. The last conversation wouldn't be bad at all even if you had phonetic notes to aid yourself. Seriously, you're good at this. Kinda shown you're a musician. Looking forward to seeing your progress from here on.
You are awesome Wes. You've learned so much in just a week =] I keep my fingers crossed. BTW if you want to practice your polish in żabka or some other places, just tell them, that you are practicing polish language =] don't be afraid. I am sure everyone will be more then welcome to help you.
Fun/hard thing about polish is that the subject in the sentence is often absent because the form of the verb defines it. You gave example of "man eat" that you dont say stuff like that. On polish man/boy/he eats it can just be shorten to "je". "You eat" can be "ty jesz" but "jesz" by itself mean that the subject is "you".
You're doing a great job, Wes! Polish grammar is very difficult indeed, but I feel that with all the effort you're putting into learning, in a couple of months you will be able to communicate with a lot of confidence :)
Maybe after you get better in polish you can rewatch some of the music vidoes you reacted to and this time around try to figure out what is the song about xD
Kudos for making this effort! If you want to practice Polish and you need a native we could meet in Park Jordana some time over weekend. I think you need some coaching with your pronunciation. I’m native Polish but I lived in several countries abroad for almost a decade so I emphasize with the need to learn a foreign language while being an expat.
Świetna robota, Wes! Jestem pod wrażeniem Twojej determinacji i wymowy. Powodzenia w dalszej nauce :) (a little homework for you: don't use that "translate button below, do it on your own instead ;) )
Hi Wes, I think as you will learn Polish vocabulary you will be surprised how many similiraties there are to Spanish and English. They all have common Indo-European ancestor, and you can see a lot of shared roots between the most common words, for example family members: Brother - Brat Sister - Siostra If you look at numbers hard enough you'll see a lot of similarities too: One - Jeden Three - Trzy Seven - Siedem etc There are also fundamental geographical features such as River - Rzeka In addition, Polish borrows A LOT of words from Latin, Greek and Western european languages, especially the more technical ones. I think you'll find it easier than you think.
Remember that Polish has a flat accent compared to other Slavic languages such as Russian that is much more melodic as it has a movable accent that depends on the word. I recall you saying that Polish sounds good in rap and I think that’s why. Some words may look identically, but the accent may change the meaning therefore memorizing it is difficult i.e. písat and pisát mean to piss and to write respectively, or múka and muká (I don’t speak Russian, so someone can correct me) depending on the accent that can mean torture, excruciation or flour (Polish męka - torture, mąka - flour). In Spanish it is also the case desafío or desafió cómo o comó and so on. In Polish only the loanwords have different accent, but the majority of Poles mispronounce them. The regular Polish accent is always on the penultimate vowel. However, words like politechnika, fizyka, muzyka, biblioteka should be pronounced politéchnika, fízyka, múzyka, biblióteka and not politechníka, fizýka, muzýka, bibliotéka as many Poles say. You already speak Spanish, so just say it accordingly. In old Polish the accents were used, however now they’re absent. I wrote them in order to aid you in your effort of learning Polish. I hope my comment is helpful!
2:42 I mean its great! you remeber meaning of those words but I think more accurate tranlation would be: czyta - he/she reads not "to read" same with biegnie, like infinitive verbs have "Ć" ending. GL!
About reading in polish. I have heard 13 years old struggling to read harder worlds, so don’t worry you are not alone. Also there is not that much similar words so even if you say something wrong we will probably understand
Hey, I'd be stoked to see your reactions to more of Dawid Podsiadło's music. He's not only super popular in Poland but he's made quite the impact globally as well with his contribution to Cyberpunk 2077. If you do plan on seeing more of his music, I'll reccommend some songs. 1: Phantom Liberty - His song for the official Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, probably one of his most well known songs. 2: Let You Down - The ending credits song to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series. 3: Where Did Your Love Go? - A song from his 2015 album "Annoyance and Disappointment". A personal favorite of mine is "And I" which is a song from his debut album called "Comfort and Happiness" after he won the Polish X-Factor series in 2012. He's an a very talented singer, both in English and Polish. I'd love for you to explore more of his songs!
Can You mention that you sit deep inside polish world language around and You learn by immersion. Word to cook means gotować you will see in polish commercials. With a picture of kitchen etc
J is basically the same in Polish and German (aside words that are borrowed from other languages), so learning some Polish or Slavic sounds can ease you learning other languages, if you choose to do so in the future. German grammar will be trivial compared to the polish one. The only thing one must remember while learning German (something that no one told me clearly) is to learn nouns with their "Artikel" (der die das), meaning if they are masculine, feminine or neutral, because aside to some rules, the genders often must be learned by heart. For example, dog is masculine, spider is feminine, girl is neutral... and so on. There is no logic in that. The whole grammar is based on it, so not learning noun articles (describing genders) will make it hard to apply the grammar rules. Still, compared to polish, it's a much simpler grammar.
The most important phrase you need to learn in every new language is "Sorry, I don't speak english". In polish that would be "Przeraszam, ale nie mówię po angielsku".
It is possible. I met an American stationed in Poland whom they taught Polish in 3 months so that I couldn't tell from his accent that he wasn't from here. He said he worked in intelligence, but who knows. Repeat the alphabet and check from time to time if you pronounce it correctly. Maybe someone can show how to set the tongue in different letters, might be faster. Muscle memory. Great job!
Looks like polish requires a lot of vocab memorization & grammatical logic to master while Chinese grammar is easy but requires vocab memorization. Spanish vocab is easy but grammar more complex so Polish is best of both worlds like other non-Anglo languages such as Korean, Tagalog, Arabic, etc..
Ok, so from polish men: 1. accent - focus on this! You can read about accent but in short try don't accent any voul and never on ą, ę try speak like mężczyzna => menżczyzna, tędy => tendy and put word in one piece. 2. Ofc this examples are not real like school english vs movies, we like shourtcuts and vulgarisms like: "Zobacz! Dzieci biegają po parku" => "Obczaj jak karakany zapierdalają", i just say can be confusing XD
It's good to learn grammar but don't go too crazy about it. Even Polish people make grammatical mistakes, esp. when they talk for a long time or are tired. You're doing great!
you still saj some letters as an american.... j, a, o .... but just do it. i was affride to speak english like in year i did undresand all but affride to speak, JUST DO IT.
Musisz poćwiczyć czytanie polskich liter, bo w poprzednim materiale było to samo "J" nie czytasz po polsku tylko po angielsku. Jak pojawia się "S" to zaczynasz mówić coś dziwnego jak "Ś" lub "SZ". Teoche bez sensu byłoby, gdybyś nauczył się źle wymawiać przez to jakoś słowa, a potem musiał uczyć ich od począdku.
Ok, I'll save You some time and effort: Instead of " Jaki masz numer telefonu?", tell her: "Daj mi swój numer." Doesn't matter for them how You ask really, it matters who is asking. If She likes You, You'll get the number.
