Rangers have an advantage in that over the years we've seen a number of players sign or force trades to them saying "I'll only go to the Rangers" including Rick Nash, Panarin, Fox & Jimmy Vesey. You might say, "Big deal, Jimmy Vesey" but at the time he was a highly sought after UFA coming out of college. Some of that advantage might be gone after the way the Trouba & Goodrow situations developed, but we'll see. Maybe players will say, "I ain't signing with them because they'll pull the same shit with me" or only signing with a total no movement clause.
I mean, if the team attracts a lot of players who are so spoiled and full of themselves that they'll only agree to play for one specific team, is it really then a surprise if that team ends up filled with players who lack work ethic and willpower? You sign spoiled brats, you get spoiled brats.

What's the most upsetting for me as a buff fan is this team on paper is genuinely fantastic. I wish we could replace Clifton with Johnson full time, but other then that, i love the team. It's just hard when your Quinn and Cozens have fallen off a cliff this year, Kulich isn't at all where he needs to be right now. Greenway can't stay healthy. NO Dahlin, and Devon has been a mess in the NHL this year. We all know the talent on paper is there, especially with Lindy behind the bench. Just absolutely no gumption and want from the team right now. Tage, Tuch, Owen (O zone turnovers, i know), and Bow have been fantastic at least. McLoud and Greenway (when he's healthy) have been studs this year too.
A lot of talent. I just think much too young and some of the young guys probably needed a little seasoning or more seasoning first before playing in the NHL.
10:00 Oh please, Drury was the aGM when Gorton was there, certainly was part of the decision to bring in and sign Trouba. Idk why people are clinging to this argument
What’s depressing is the only thing the Sabres have worth celebrating is missing the playoffs by 1 point. That was the closest fans came to happiness. Aside from that, there is nothing to cheer about.
I remember those days. You know what I'm talking about. The days when the Sens were stars on "The Great Tire Fire". Man, it feels great they aren't headlining anymore. For now at least.
The reason as I see it why Laviolette is safe is he's a scapegoat for Drury. If he's gone it all falls to him. I'm fully on the fire Drury side of this. He can't read the locker room even as a successful former player. Also say he has no involvement with any of the contracts is BS. He's been in the Mangement system being groomed for this for years. Looks like he's a bad student as well as a bad GM.
Buffalo still has the youngest average age roster in the NHL. Tough to win when you don't have any experienced vets on the team to point the way. I still feel like they needed to overpay, either a free agent or in a trade, for a legit, experienced top 6 forward and a top 4 rugged d-man. They need to hire an experienced, proven GM and coach and just let them cook for a while. I don't even watch the highlights anymore, forget about the games.
One has missed the playoffs for 13 years and are on a 11 game losing streak, the other one won the presidents trophy last year, has a top 3 goalie in the league and are currently at NHL 500. Rags fans have NO idea what it’s like.
I’m not very optimistic about my pens this year. At least I can look at the entire state of New York and say “at least I’m not a fan of one of those teams”. Also as a Browns fan I’d love to see Buffalo be a playoff team.
Tire fire is the nice way of saying how bad it has been for Buffalo. There are actually no words to describe how bad it's been for that city when it comes to the Buffalo Sabres.. I think they will figure it out eventually. Detroit will too and I think Ottawa is very underrated & I think they make the playoffs and play Toronto.... That would be awesome...
I expect more No Movement Clauses going forward. Already seeing lots, but mostly bigger name players. Only way to secure your spot is a full NMC. No trade clause doesn't exempt you from waivers or buyout. If nobody would take Goodrow from waivers, they would have to buy him out. Drury might have made some bad calls, but clearly, his relationship with Mike Grier and SJS paid off for them in that spot. I think Dolan will give him one more shot with the big cap jump this off-season. They need to go all in on a Center.
when adams says he can't sign anyone... it's in respect to what the fans are demanding... him to get a top 6 forward or two... there were not many of those available this last offseason.....
The Rangers are more like a slow-smoldering fire that suddenly flashes over. Drury (and Gorton before him) has made some very questionable moves for a long time, but only now has it really blown up, and now it’s hard to imagine how you can put the fire out rather than just waiting for it to burn everything down.
Two years ago, the Sabres fooled both me and management. The young players that had career years and looked like they were going to turn in to at least very good NHL players, potentially star plays have shown that was a mirage. Dylan Cozens really fooled me. I thought he was going to be a really good #3 center. Then he went out and had that great season and I had to think well, he's at least a #2 center in the NHL and I can't rule out he might be a poor man's #1 center. He was so young and surely hadn't hit his ceiling. Two way game, plays hard. It was just the skill aspect of his game that was way ahead of schedule. Turns out, my initial assessment was closer to the truth. After he got in to that fight last year, he has been a shadow of his former self. I don't know if it was because of the injury, he did get hurt badly in the fight. Or, if it's something else. He just is nowhere near a top 6 forward in the NHL. And at times, he doesn't look like a #3 center in the league. He looks like a #4 center, this year. He kills every offensive rush he partakes in. He can't pass, can't shoot, can't even handle well placed passes to him. Fumbles everything. He's a mess. Quinn is worse. Quinn I was never fully sold on, but he doesn't even look like an NHL player at this point. And he was counted on for top 6 role. Benson, although he has a lot of heart and always puts out the effort, has a high hockey iq, is just NOT ready for the NHL. It was a HUGE mistake to put him on the team as a 18 year old. Also a mistake THIS year. He needed to go back to juniors last year, dominate. Play at least ONE year in Rochester, the AHL. He's just the poster boy for the mistakes the Sabres have made by rushing young talented players to the NHL. They needed to buy time with veterans, and didn't. Now, they're ruining young prospects. The Sabres problem is, they have AHL'ers playing KEY roles on their NHL roster. Not to mention Owen Power has struggled defensively since he joined the team. You can see Lindy has helped him some with it, but he is still VERY much a work in progress. Dahlin gets hurt and it all unravels. Hell, even Ryan Mcleod who had a GREAT start to the season has fallen off. I'm wondering if he's got an injury he's playing through. Sorry Rangers, if you want to OUT tire fire my team you have to try HARDER! You're almost there. But not yet.
Note that Drury has already named TWO coaches (Gallant and Lavy) and was around as AGM for Quinn..... how many chances does he get? Note the NYR have had an easy schedule so far - they have stunk against playoff teams. Oh, and an honorable mention for the Isles? their record is worse than the NYR, albeit lower expectations.
As a flames fan at the beginining of the year I would of expected my team to be here and to be honest I expected Buffalo here but no the rangers the rangers are truly a unique suprise lol
There is no comparison. The Rangers have the pieces to snap out of their funk. They need changes past the bench: getting rid of Drury for a start. If Pegula/Adams were booted out of Buffalo today that would be a weight off the team. They’d still need a ton of work on that roster. Remember the big/slow teams when the 2005-06 season began, and how they fared? Buffalo is young/small in a league favoring veteran teams that don’t get pushed around.
I don't know how anyone looked at Sabres forward lineup and thought "yeah thats a playoff team". It's got to be bottom 5 in the league. Rangers are just spiraling and their upcoming schedule will bury them. I think the team on paper is fine but it just isn't clicking.
I don’t view things as a failure if you don’t get a cup. To me, if you make the playoffs, you’ve won the season. If you make it at least halfway through the playoffs, then you REALLY won the season
I dont think the rangers are going to move anyone else. I think the GM will get canned. As far as who has the bigger drama? I agree with you Hockey Guy, RANGUHZ by far!

A lot of talent. I just think much too young and some of the young guys probably needed a little seasoning or more seasoning first before playing in the NHL.
I'm 80% sure Rangers tyre fire will end once Drury is fired.
With Buffalo, it's harder to figure out how to fix it.
Move Buffalo to Quebec city.
@DBeau73 that might work
I love that THG deep fried the thumbnail of this video
As a Canucks fan I know the term tire fire very well.
OOOH, I'm LOVING watching this in philly. :) thx shannon!
great thumbnails feels like theyre ancient kingdoms deploying fireballs
At least the fire will keep us warm
Great video idea. It would be funnier if I didnt feel bad for Buffalo fans
I'm enjoying watching this.
The deep fried thumbnail tho
Buffalo's may be the more enduring tyre fire but the Rangers have a more spectacular fire going on.
Your podcast is the best
Ah I remember how these tire fire vids used to be about the sens, I'll enjoy this stretch until they fall apart again
As a Canadiens fan i am just looking to see when i can stop hating the Rags. Once Kreider is gone will be the time lol
Idk how to feel being compared to Buffalo
Commiserate with us, friend.
We’ll get some wings ready for you. Pretend Josh Allen is wearing a Rangers uniform.
We are heading that way under Drury
No worries. The Oilers got compared to the Sharks after 15 games last season. We still ended up in the final..
Hey Hockey Guy, Sabres fan here, I’m traveling to Vancouver in January and seeing the Sabres play . Am I allowed
To bring in a palm tree ? 🌴
Let the boarder know about the palm ahead of time and you'll be fine 😊
You cant shop Krieder and expect his team mates to respond positively
Amazing thumbnail
I’m not very optimistic about my pens this year. At least I can look at the entire state of New York and say “at least I’m not a fan of one of those teams”. Also as a Browns fan I’d love to see Buffalo be a playoff team.
Don't worry, pens will be there soon
Nashville, the tirefire that burned so quickly they were totally forgotten about
Did you see a Russian hockey player in Poland was arrested for espionage?
Tire fire is the nice way of saying how bad it has been for Buffalo. There are actually no words to describe how bad it's been for that city when it comes to the Buffalo Sabres.. I think they will figure it out eventually. Detroit will too and I think Ottawa is very underrated & I think they make the playoffs and play Toronto.... That would be awesome...
the last two questions were brutal lol
What scares me is that we are the second worst team against the top half of the league, only ahead of Anaheim
Seth jones for Panarin Straight up
Ranger players better grow up.
Much like the Springfield tire fire, the Sabres’ tire fire seems to have been burning forever. Hard to compare to the Rangers’ situation.
The Rangers are more like a slow-smoldering fire that suddenly flashes over. Drury (and Gorton before him) has made some very questionable moves for a long time, but only now has it really blown up, and now it’s hard to imagine how you can put the fire out rather than just waiting for it to burn everything down.
Why does 'half a decade' seem much longer than 5 years?
It's a fancy word for us unsophisticated people so it feels longer
It's more characters, that's why.
What's going on with the Rangers right now reminds me of what happened with the Leafs and Ballard/Imlach in the early 80s.
It's weird being a diehard sabres fan for my entire life, and finally reaching a point where I'm actually rooting against my own team out of spite. 🌴
Makes me so sad for the Rangers, not!😂
Note that Drury has already named TWO coaches (Gallant and Lavy) and was around as AGM for Quinn..... how many chances does he get?
Note the NYR have had an easy schedule so far - they have stunk against playoff teams.
Oh, and an honorable mention for the Isles? their record is worse than the NYR, albeit lower expectations.
As a flames fan at the beginining of the year I would of expected my team to be here and to be honest I expected Buffalo here but no the rangers the rangers are truly a unique suprise lol
They should join forces and create a super team called the “NY Tire Fires”
New contracts will have can't be put on waivers
As a penguins fan you really can’t compare anything to the Sabres tire fire. It’s the worst we’ve ever seen.
I dont think the rangers are going to move anyone else. I think the GM will get canned.
As far as who has the bigger drama? I agree with you Hockey Guy, RANGUHZ by far!
Teams hang conference title and president's trophy banners. While not as good as Stanley cups they still mean something.
