I played trumpet in the Pit Orchestra for "Der Glöckner von Notre Dame" at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin for its final two years there. Drew Sarich played Quasimodo (the Hunchback) in the show. He's one of the greats in musical theater. I almost ended up returning to Germany for this production of Tanz der Vampire at the Theater des Westens (the music had even been sent to me) but unfortunately they omitted the trumpet parts (rewrote them into synthesizer parts) to save money. I would have loved the opportunity to play this show. Great music!
Bravo! Brilliant play. My only regret is not knowing fluent German so I could have enjoyed this live, but still, this was an experience. I loved every second of it

Drew Sarich will always be my favorite. I've loved everything he has ever been in and it is because of him that I got interested in all these shows. Unlocked my love on german musicals. Also the dancers at 42:41 are incredible.

Tanz Der Vampire is a German Musical based on Dance Of The Vampires or Fearless Vampire Killers with late Actress Sharon Tate playing Sarah and her husband Roman who directed it. I have this on DVD. This so amazing.

I love how the professor had that same comical lilt to his voice, clearly giving homage to the great Rene Auberjonois, who played this part originally in the American flop opposite of Micheal Crawford. I know Micheal got a lot of criticism over taking that role and overall the play here in the states did horribly but us amazing that Micheal Struggled with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but he still managed at 61 to sing opera while wearing heavy make up and stewing under the unforgiving heat if the theatre lights. Enough about him, this is also a masterpiece, I'm glad it did well in Germany but still it's a pity it wasn't received well here in America. RIP Rene Auberjonois
Actually the German is the original version. The version on Broadway in the 2000s is an English remake of the german musical. But the English version butchered the source material, which is why it was so badly received. The german musical had already been long established by that point.
And the lilt to the voice is a common thing that all the versions of the professor have, so it was probably more of Rene Auberjonois paying homage to the german musical than the other way around.
The German speaking versions came first and even the original professor sounds like that. These are far better done. Michael Crawford and his script demands made a mess of the Broadway version. Edit - I checked and the original 1997 is still up if you're interested in the original cast. Steve Barton was phenomenal.
