When I saw the one from last year I was very disappointed and after I watched it I had already given up so I don't intend on watching every other adaptation that will come out
Disney Remakes: We suck at honoring the animated classics The Live action Wimpy Kid movies: *Successfully honor the original Jeff Kinney books* Disney Remakes: …. How is this possible? Wimpy Kid movies: “Because we cared.”
Diary of a Wimpy Kid should’ve been a faithful animated series where each season would adapt a book. The art style could be either 2D or stylish 3D like The Peanuts Movie.
The original Rodrick Rules was one of those sequels that proved sequels could be better than the original, and this one craps on that legacy by being even worse than the first
What really disappointed me is how badly the handled the fallout of the parents finding out. In the live action version you see how badly it fractures Greg and Rodrick’s relationship when it was just getting to its peak. But in this, Rodrick’s just kinda like “You snitched.” … …and then that’s it. No real emotional weight. It felt as serious as if Greg forgot to put a new roll of toilet paper after using the bathroom. No real weight or catharsis upon their reparations at the end like there was in the live action movie.
True, in live action movie Rodrick was so upset and disappointed in Greg. When he said "You're my brother, but you'll never be my friend." I almost cried. The movie was so well made and the cast's amazing acting also contributes to that. In this animation, it's like they lack emotion which is the most important part of their brotherly relationship.
I remember when the first animated DoaWK movie was announced last year & thinking the animation style was unnaturally bizarre (Manny’s design in particular was disturbing to me). I could tell they tried to replicate Kinney’s original 2D design from the books into a modernized 3D style while also trying to keep the nostalgia of the original books. One problem is obviously the simple yet complex design of the characters: each of them have distinct facial features that look unique in the books, but even more creepy in the films both in color and animation (once again, Manny is a prime example of this). Idk why I’m delving so deep into this; I don’t care if people read this or not, but as someone who grew up reading the originals (for me that’s like books 1-5) it’s just disappointing that the franchise has kinda gone downhill over the years.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if Greg just gave Manny a regular circle shaped head like the rest of the Heffley Family instead of a buck-toothed crocodile design.
I just imagine each season being a book. Like first season is obviously the first book in the series. Second season is Rodrick Rules Third season is The Last Straw Fourth Season is Dog Days 5th Season is The Ugly Truth 6th season is Cabin Fever And so on. I agree that it should have been better to have this as a TV series. I remember some rumors years before that a TV series was planned. This was years ago, so I don't remember exactly every rumor.
The original Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies (especially Rodrick Rules) honestly added more heart to the story than the books. Each on has a theme and actually tries to hold Greg accountable. The first one is about learning to be a good friend, the second a good brother, and the third a good son; all things children can relate to and need to learn as they grow up. There was you know a point to all of it, it's not just a collection of whacky moments.
I recently watched the third SpongeBob movie, and the whole time, I thought “why didn’t Diary of a Wimpy Kid do something similar art-wise?” Like, other studios have seemed to master the “3D that looks like 2D” style, like the Big Nate show at Nickelodeon, Into the Spiderverse, Captain Underpants, and the Peanuts movie.
This movie is also missing a lot from the book; the tinfoil ball, jeremy pindle, the invisible chirag prank, the swimming tryouts during summer and more. Plus the cheese touch is never mentioned unlike the live action movie and the book, and greg never mentions that he's in 7th grade now
The thing that rlly annoyed me about this movie is that there is no brotherly bond. And that’s felt in the scene where the party is revealed to the parents. In the original this really hurts bc this came about through Greg’s carelessness and right as he and rodrick were at their closest and most brotherly. Their entire relationship in the animated one is lying to each-other and blackmailing one another. That brotherly bond is never felt once. Hell when the truth is discovered Greg had literally just finished blackmailing rodrick in the live action they’d just gotten back from a night out where they really got along. This animated film doesn’t understand these books.
Honestly in my opinion, I feel like it could work better if these were shorts (similar to the Cars on the Road which is a short series based on the movies called Cars by Pixar that came out earlier this year) or maybe an cartoon show then maybe I wouldn’t mind as much tbh.
I'll never understand how they took an art style as recognizable and iconic as Diary of a Wimpy kid and somehow made it look more bland and corporate than most commercials on tv.
I remember watching the og movies with my parents as a kids and they were laughing more than I was. No one can says it’s allowed to be bad bc it’s for kids
Fr who’s idea was it to do a animated version of diary of a wimpy kid, especially after seeing how hot Devon Bostick was as Rodrick in the original movies 💀
Apparently they thought that Devon was "too old" to play Rodrick in the fourth movie (which is complete nonsense because Devon still looks the same and didn't age at all), but still they could've brought Devon back to voice over the animated version of Rodrick. The original movies will forever be amazing and I'll keep rewatching them because of Devon, no one could play Rodrick better than he did.
TBH, Blue Sky Could’ve Done a Better Way Because of The Peanuts Movie, Also The Teaser For The Diary of The Wimpy Kid Looked Amazing, Like Better Than These Two Animated Films.
@@jaxsterminator8634 in your comment, you stated that, “THE ANIMATION IS SO MUCH BETTER”. in order to prove your point you need evidence. last time i checked you provided no evidence. it is not evidence to point to something and say, ‘This is better because yes!’.
As much as I like these films, I'm honestly tempted to ask, what ungodly forces compelled the people behind this and the previous movie to ditch the Peanuts Movie-esque look it was going for in favor of this look?
_As someone who quite literally enjoyed all the movies and has yet to understand why people seemed to just get violently hurt by every single DOaWK movie, honestly I still can't understand the distaste for it_ Mind you as someone who's near their adult years, maybe it's just because I don't have this seemingly lifeline-esque nostalgic attraction to the books, or maybe I just lack the *unnecessarily* high expectations people have for a movie adaptation of some pre-teen's diary, but I actually enjoyed the animated movies
Rodrick actually did cry in the second movie that came out in 2011. It was during the school talent show when Patty was singing. He only shed a single tear lol. However I read somewhere that the actor that played Rodrick (Devon Bostick) cried because he was sad that they would be done filming the movie soon and he'd have to say goodbye to his castmates. His crying wasn't scripted but the directors decided to leave it in the final cut.
If they wanted to make an animated movie with the book style they really should have gone for a 2D black and white sketchbook style. They really missed a great opportunity.
I felt like the writers wanted all of the main iconic scenes and parts from the original book and movie, but they wanted to change how they occurred But how they occurred originally was great and the only way they could have done things
instead of the dumpster fire animation we had now, I wish we had the animation style of the actual books shown in original moves or even clips in THIS VERY MOVIE
As someone who never read the books and wasn’t all that impressed with the live-action films, I figured these animated remakes would’ve been an easier way of familiarizing myself the series. But judging by the reactions these newer films have been getting, I’m starting to wonder if this is even a series I can get into. Are the books any better, or is it pretty much the same?
The books are a lot better. You are really reading the story from the perspective of a middle school boy with illustrations to comically describe his experiences. The new animated movies are trying to do what the book does, but that format doesn't actually work copied Word for word, which is why there would be so much bloat becasue it's not meant to be haphazard slapped onto everything.
Honestly, the first three live action movies were and always will be my favorite because the whole cast have chemistry and they look like an actual family. It has even been said that the cast went bowling before filming in order to get to know each other better, which I think is so wholesome.
I have so much respect for you now i went to watch this i couldn't get through like the first 5 minutes holy its so hard to review such crap without giving up
the charm of the original books was the fun little sketches, the 3D outright ruines it in this case, it's just like a stock ad. Also, the red thing, it's subsurface scattering, which has no part in this animation style
One thing I have a complaint about in both the new movies, is switching personalities. Like for example, in the 1st new movie, Rowley is more of Greg, and Greg is more of Rowley. In the new movie, during the concert thingy, I dont think thats something Rodrick would do. If it was in the original books, Rodrick most likely wouldnt start crying. No, he would go up the stairs and murder both Greg and his band. (probably) (IN MY OPINION) plus the cheap ahh animation, weird spaghetti hair on all the characters, and lack of plot, plus the switch personalities just makes the movies so...bad the original trilogy >>>>>>> long haul, new movies
i fucking hated the animation in this, i loved the live action movies and hated how in this one, the script was horrible since the mum and the dad left at the start of the movie AND NAH THEY’RE MAKING A THIRD ONE?! i noticed that they changed the voices. that killed me. disney is truly ruining this.
I literally had no idea this existed. I remember a lot of hype regarding the first one that quickly went away. Had no idea a second one was ever made until clicking this video. But can't say I'm surprised it's of similar/worse quality as the first.
This version is why Rodrick Rules in 2011 is one of my favourite childhood movies. This movie is a disgrace to those who enjoy the original Wimpy trilogy.
This dude should make a movie I think since he sees mistakes in moves that are worth millions he would be a good writer and director when it comes to ideas, songs and just the play out in general.
The two remakes of diary of a wimpy kid are very boring. It does not have any good humor like the classic ones (live action diary of a wimpy kid). While watching through the first remake and Roderick rules remake, I’ve been waiting and waiting for good funny moments to happen. Throughout both of the remakes, all I can ever think of was “Do something!” Disney needs to stop making these remakes because they are not working well.
I thought the second one was better than the first one. The characters were more likeable and less douchebaggy than last time. But even then it's still like a 4/10 movie.
@@unrandom1194 i would say a solid 5/10 for me. it wasn’t atrociously bad but it wasn’t good either. it was just your general average movie but i think by these movies being about an hour really makes everything feel less valuable to the store because you’re having to speed up the time in which they should use for character development
Oh my goodness I had never heard Rodrick's animated voice before since I couldn't be bothered to watch the movies WHAT IS THAT VOICE THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT RODRICK HOW DO YOU MESS UP THIS BADLY!?
Yknow when the last one was coming out i commented making fun of manny and jeff himself replied with just “hey we worked hard on that” Make of that what you will
I didn’t even know they MADE a second one until I saw it on Disney+. Couldn’t BELIEVE they’d make a second. It’s so sad. The og movies were great, and this is just depressing.
Same tbh I thought this one was actually pretty good Sure it’s not to the same quality as the original live action ones but i still thought it was enjoyable
I like this movie because Ed Asner plays the grandpa and was honestly perfect for the role, and Jeff Kinney worked on it too. He didn’t work with Long Haul.
I’m probably gonna get hated for this but I really enjoyed this one, I mean we will never get the old actors it’s been well over 10 years. Their voices has changed and so I’m gonna accept that making a 3d animation is probably a good concept after the long haul got absolute shitted on. So get angry at me for this I like this movie, even tho it isn’t rodrick it seems like if the book came alive that would be the rodrick we know. Plus they did use stuff from the books sooooo

(probably)
(IN MY OPINION)
plus the cheap ahh animation, weird spaghetti hair on all the characters, and lack of plot, plus the switch personalities just makes the movies so...bad
the original trilogy >>>>>>> long haul, new movies
Lol the fact they thought they were hilarious when they tried to Rick-roll people 😂
It's sad, because Rodrick Rules is the best book and the live action movie is great.
5:02 WHOA RODDICK WHAT YOU DOING WITH YO HAND
“Stop! Stop! He’s already dead!”
Hopefully they pull what the original trilogy did and make Dog Days better.
It was on Disney plus so yeah should have seen this coming
I’ve never even heard of this movie…
I have
i fucking hated the animation in this, i loved the live action movies and hated how in this one, the script was horrible since the mum and the dad left at the start of the movie AND NAH THEY’RE MAKING A THIRD ONE?!
i noticed that they changed the voices. that killed me.
disney is truly ruining this.
I didn't even know it released this year or existed.
I literally had no idea this existed. I remember a lot of hype regarding the first one that quickly went away. Had no idea a second one was ever made until clicking this video. But can't say I'm surprised it's of similar/worse quality as the first.
5:07 HE SOUNDS LIKE THAT!?!?
*10/10
@@jaxsterminator8634 nah bro its a 4/10, cry about it
@@unrandom1194 ITS 11/10
@@unrandom1194 i would say a solid 5/10 for me. it wasn’t atrociously bad but it wasn’t good either. it was just your general average movie but i think by these movies being about an hour really makes everything feel less valuable to the store because you’re having to speed up the time in which they should use for character development
@@jaxsterminator8634 👶
Oh my goodness I had never heard Rodrick's animated voice before since I couldn't be bothered to watch the movies
WHAT IS THAT VOICE THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT RODRICK HOW DO YOU MESS UP THIS BADLY!?
NO MORE NO MOREEEEEE! We already have the superior Rodrick Rules
Rodrick rules? More like Rodrick druels
Just leave Wimpy Kid alone.
I'm the Wimpy Kid :(((
Was it weird that Rodrick didn’t know who Rowley was? I thought that was the oddest thing of all 🤣
Now that we have 3 rodricks we need a rodrick no way home where this rodrick betrays them
Let’s be real… this rodrick is the worst and is pure evil
Yknow when the last one was coming out i commented making fun of manny and jeff himself replied with just “hey we worked hard on that”
Make of that what you will
it’s rulin time
You are first congrats
I didn’t even know they MADE a second one until I saw it on Disney+. Couldn’t BELIEVE they’d make a second. It’s so sad. The og movies were great, and this is just depressing.
MAKE IT STOP ✋️
Why did they take one of the worst ways to make video games, yearly releases, and put that into a movie franchise?!
I actually enjoyed it tho
Same tbh I thought this one was actually pretty good
Sure it’s not to the same quality as the original live action ones but i still thought it was enjoyable
Same tbh, I mean yeah it needs some improvement but I mean it's nice
Same it’s better than the last one and long haul.
The first animated film was one of the most torturous film experiences of my life. Definitely not watching the sequel.
I just love Nick's boiling hate against Manny Heffley
