I first saw the online version on funbrain. I was reading it as it came out. Does ANYONE remember that Piper Elizabeth Matthews used to be named Jennifer Lynn Phillips? I swear I remember this and being confused when she was later renamed.
I never saw that, but I believe you. There is evidence that the online version was retroactively tampered with, even after the print books were published. For instance, prior to 2011, Marty Porter had an entirely different name, but the online version was later altered to match his name from the book. And Stinky Williams was consistently called "Stinky" originally throughout the entire book, but a later edit has one page calling him Fregley (who is a completely different character even in the online version, but the page calling Stinky Fregley is the scene where he wrestles Greg, so it appears that a revision was attempted to make it match with the print book, then it was realized the revision was continuity error and dropped, but a small side-effect from it remained). I wouldn't be surprised if Piper Matthews was originally called Jennifer Phillips when the online version initially went up, and then changed later. The revision was a very early one if that's true though, as I read the online version in early 2009 and it was still Piper Matthews at that point. Since Holly Hills doesn't appear in the first print book, my theory is that Jeff Kinney was originally going to change Jennifer Phillips' name to Piper Matthews when he finally introduced her in the second book, and revised the online version to match up with this, but then he ended up calling her Holly Hills instead when he finally published the second book, meaning that Jennifer Phillips' is the actual original name and Piper Matthews is a residual from an early draft of the second book that was retroactively edited into the online version. I honestly hate that the online version was retroactively edited to make it closer to the print books, as that's an erasure of history (historical revisionism), which makes me wonder if there are any other edits that we don't know about because they were never documented. But, at least the online book mostly stayed intact.
I was reading the online version just a few minutes ago, and Piper is referred to as "Jennifer" on page 632. It mentions Greg hanging out with Lori (Piper's sister) because he wants to "have a better shot at dating her younger sister, Jennifer." I think the online version *did* originally call her Jennifer throughout the entire book, and Kinney missed this one spot when he altered it later on. I only had suspicions at first when this initial comment was made, but this new finding pretty much confirms it.

I think some of the stuff from the first version was more relatable or realistic which I like but I get why they would get rid of some of it for the final kids version.
