- This video shows why the smaller rc car A959-B (1/18 Scale) is faster or quicker than the larger 144001 (1/14 Scale) .
We tested the maximum RPM of the brushed motors of these rc cars using 2S Lipo battery and found out that the smaller 540 motor of A959-B is faster than the bigger 550 motor of 144001.
NOTE: In comparing the expected top speed of these 2 rc cars there are still many factors to consider aside from the speed (RPM) of the motors but I did not mention them in the video due to the following reasons:
A959-B gains slightly more speed due to less weight
144001 also gain more speed due to slightly larger tires
Therefore, the advantages / disadvantages of each car will compensate each other and will not give significant effect in the top speed.
*Below is a quick comparison of these factors in both cars:
a) Gearing = 27/42 on both rc cars
b) Weight = A959B is 186 grams lighter ( 694g v/s 880g )
c) Tire diameter= A959B is 10 mm smaller ( 60 mm v/s 70 mm )
d) Internal Gears = A959B(15/40) v/s 144001(12/30), so 144001 slightly faster

Hallo,
Well done test 👍 , but like you have already also mentioned…
RPM with NO load on a motor is just one of many factors for REAL performance. All RPM does not help, when a motor has not enough torque in its complete setup within a model (gearing, weight, tyre-diameter, all over rolling resistance, surface,…) to transform its RPM to real driving performance.
In "old days" when we had to use brushed motors and quite limited battery-capacity (when I started racing 1400mAh 7,2V NiCa where the maximum you had to race Off-Road for 5 Minutes in competition…) quite expensive motor-dynos were used to find out all needed parameters of a motor and its perfect setup (many different brushes and springs…) to find the best possible way to get the best performance…
Nowadays with all LiPo and brushless technology we are lucky to have we do not have to worry so much like in the past about motor gearing & setup anymore, because most times we just have energy in abundance easily… as long as our setup is not totally wrong, it will work out decently… 😉
So, measuring the RPM without load on the motor is just one factor, but not really significant standing alone.
This way it would be possible that a motor with less RPM within the right setup can make a model faster than a motor with higher RPM…
Not even talking about another important factor in racing…acceleration power… 😎
Keep on having a good RC time and stay well…!
Best regards from Germany,
Thorsten 🌞
thank you for your kind comments
@@RcModwerks23 You are welcome…👍
Awesome video man ! Thanks a lot ! Time to buy 540 motor for my 144001 . Vroommmmmmmmm
Have fun!
Thanks for the video. With your videos, we learnt many things 🤗🤗🤗
Happy to hear that! 👍
Great comparison. I'd like to see that 540 motor in that 1/14 buggy.
Thanks,... at the moment I have installed a brushless motor to that 1/14 Buggy (144001) because I wanted to make it much faster (see my other videos of 144001 with brushless running +110 kph) ... but I will make a video soon testing the speed of 144001 with a 540 motor (but I expect only 65-70 kph on 2S)
Nice comparison.. That tachometer seems pretty neat
UCmenierian Hobbies Thanks! It’s useful for me to check if my brushless motors are still performing well according to their KV rating
@@RcModwerks23 That's a good tool to have for sure. I may have to pick one up on eBay.
@@RcModwerks23 so did you ever install a959b in 144001? so you just put the 144001 pinion on the 540 motor...what about temps on motor and punch out of the hole??? it would be nice to be able to use my stock 1500 2s and have a 38 mph car instead of a 30 mph car...but if motor is working much harder and you lose punch out of the hole not sure...thanks
Awesome test once again mate 👍
Thanks 👍
apakah motor 540 bisa di gunakan di wltoys 144001??
apa saja yang di ubah?
atau hanya plug n play?
How on earth did you get the motor screws loose to get the motor out of the 959b?
I have ruined bits and screw drivers and the screws aren't even scratched!
I managed to get 1 loose but the other 3 seem impossible.🤷
The screws needs to be heated to get loose
@@RcModwerks23 ...heated like with a small torch?
so is the wltoys 550 a 14 turn motor??? and the 540 12 turn??? thanks
Not so sure but some say that the 550 motor is 27T while the 540 motor is 17T ... but I want to prove it myself by dis-asembling these Wltoys motors and counting literally their turns.
@@RcModwerks23 okay sounds great... so i guess if you had two 550 motors and they were installed in the same car with same pinion a 27t would demand less amps then a 17t 550 if they were being pushed to the limits??? i am just trying to understand these brushed setups... i have only been using brushless for many years...thanks for your help...
@@RcModwerks23 we are all waiting to know the turns please! :)
@@Cesko7584 we will know that later when I will have time to disassemble it and count the turns
I bought a wltoys 540 motor for a959b, when i check the packaging it says A959-B-13. The 13 on the last part, could it be a 13t motor?
Hallo from holland
Will the 540 motor from 959-b make the 144001 faster? Do you now How many turns motor is ?
I am just nieuw in this hobby
Grtz kim
Yes, it will make it faster by 5-10 kph, but not more than that
You should have tested a couple of each to see the consistency in rpm in these motors and also tested them actually on the wl 144001 to see how it performs underload, i would say try both with one of those hobbywing 1060 esc aswell to see the difference because they definatly add a little speed.
Thanks for watching, maybe in future vids
Which is good durabilty w/ both of them?
Actually I was not able to test the durabilty of these motors since I already upgraded to brushless system which is more durable and efficient
if using the same motor, which esc can rotate the motor faster?
the esc of 144001 is slightly faster ... we get 27,87 RPM from 540 motor
@@RcModwerks23 how much rpm is generated if using dynamo 390?
does the a959b motor fit in 144001?
yes, it is a direct fit since the 550 motor is just a bit longer than the 540 motor
does esc 144001 support 540 motor?
@@sadlife2301 yes, it works with the 540 motor
@@RcModwerks23 if this motor is installed at 144001 can this cause a problematic esc?
@@sadlife2301 I have to try it myself, but I think it will be ok as long as you run it with 2s lipo only
I suspect the 144001 is less efficient and a lot more power hungry. If you gave both a 3s even if the a969b can handle it the power from the 550 motor will start showing its advantages.
Yes, the 550 motor needs more power since it is a larger motor and the matched it with the larger car 144001 which need more torque to move ... but unfortunately it´s not safe to use 3S with the stock ESC´s , I tried it but the ESC got fried
No load tells nothing but rpm. Practical load in service yields realistic output.
These 540 & 550 size brushed motors are generally used for 1/10 scale rc cars , so they are overkill for these smaller scale buggies which are very light ... and this is why the 540 with higher RPM will be literally faster ( I have proven that in my other video with a 10 km/h difference in top speed)
@@RcModwerks23 rate of acceleration tells how much torque the motor makes.
best vids! go on!!!
Thanks for watching
Swap the esc and motors and see any difference 👍🏻
I will try that 👍
The motors performed the same even if we swap the ESCs
Rpm of a959 b is good but 144001 is realy w good rc
Comparing the two rc cars, the 144001 has much better handling but the A959 is quicker
Well bigger motor does not mean more speed. It just means more power. For same voltage, smaller motor would be faster.
Yes, they put bigger motor to 144001 for more power/torque since it is a heavier car
Can I have one of your rc cars
i´m not yet done experimenting on them, will do some giveaways later on 😉
A9 series is all plastic. 144 has a lot of metal is is pretty damn heavy.
My stock 144001 weighs only 985 grams so I dont consider it heavy
