@Fight Commentary Breakdowns This is an underground fight promotion called ケンカの祭典 FIGHT CLUB and this particular tournament is FIGHT CLUB VOL.8 which means it’s the 8th Tournament of the promotion. This was held on July 24th 2011 at a venue called STUDIO PARITA in Sumione-ku Osaka city. The guy with Gi is TOBI and if you look at his Gi carefully there’s a 日本拳法(Nihon Kempo) logo on the left side of his chest which indicates that he isn’t a Karate guy. The guy with shorts is a boxer called 翔輝(Showki) so the original video you found should have been named Nihon Kempo Vs Boxing instead of Karate Vs MMA. Lol This was a kickboxing rule with open finger gloves and TOBI and his buddies are from OGU’s Nihon Kempo team, not the Karate Club/Team. OGU has both Karate and Nihon Kempo Team/Club. Hope this helps ;)

@@TNTTestificate I read Japanese. Follow the first candidate link and you'll see the same gi. The sign the girl is holding and the webpage both say 日本拳法部 which is "Japan[ese] Kempo Club." The second candidate link is the school's karate club 空手道部 "Karate Do Club", so they're definitely two different entities. Interestingly, the kempo club is apparently larger than the karate club. Technically, Nippon Kempo isn't quite a form of karate, but a synthesized martial art emerging in 1932 popular with universities (100+ schools have clubs), military, and police. It is full-contact and includes strikes, blocks, pins, joint-locks, and ground combat. However, Okinawan kenpo was meant to expressly be a call-back to a time before karate had 'styles' and because of this the line between kempo and karate is blurred in Japan and America alike, where Ed Parker popularized the American Kenpo system that originated in Hawai'i.
Let me get this straight, just to summarize the comments: MMA beats Karate = Karate doesn’t work. Karate beats MMA = The MMA guy is not trained well enough.
I read Japanese. It's Nippon Kempo, aka Nihon Kempo, aka Nikken, which is practiced at over a hundred universities in Japan and is popular with military and law enforcement. It emerged in 1932 as a synthesis of various martial arts to include striking, blocking, pinning, joint locks, and ground fighting. It is full-contact. Because Okinawan Kempo is expressly meant to be an expression of a vision of a capital K Karate and American Kenpo is marketed as 'kenpo karate,' as well as both judo and karate being strong influences on Nippon Kempo, even in Japan the idea of 'kempo karate' persists to the point that I'm not sure anyone would call it worth arguing if it's karate or not, but that's the short of it.
They both look skilled, although karate is sufficiently rare in full contact that the karateka has probably had to fight dozens of kickboxers while the other guy may be fighting a serious karateka for his first time. It's sort of like fighting southpaws in that way. Loved that he stuck to the karate gameplan. Distance management is always a priority, and experienced karateka are able to stay out of striking range except for when they think it benefits them most of the time. This tends to favor a high degree of skill as it reduces the chances of things turning into a bar brawl. Then there's those short-range high roundhouse kicks that are so popular in karate and KO a ton of people that just never see it coming. Good karateka can kick you in the head a lot closer than seems to make sense and it comes out at such an extreme angle that it's in your peripheral vision.
The Karate guy is a Kudo fighter. Kudo utilises an array of very practical fighting techniques. Karate as it is meant to be and not the Western mc dojo Karate.
@James Card the problem with MA training in schools in the west is schools/dojo somehow are legally restricted if training is brutal. Parents get concerned with dojos like that which eventually creates mcdojos. In the east, most dojos aren't money oriented and things considered brutal are practiced even at a very young age. I'm not saying all in the west are like that but there are so many that it gets difficult to find a legit dojo with a legit training method.
