Kansas City, MO was a capstone to such a wonderful day of discovering three Midwestern cities. One of the things I learned about Kansas City downtown was that in the 90's companies moved out to the suburbs from downtown. In the last 10 years, office spaces have been converted to condos and apartments so there seems to be a really lively and vibrant community there. Lots of people had taken their dogs out for walks and people were headed home from work. I'm sure the weather and light added a lot to the town but I really enjoyed my brief visit. I can see coming back and spending some time to explore. I hope you enjoy this walk. I filmed it at the end of November.
To answer some of the questions I asked in this walk:
Kansas name: www.indianaffairs.gov/as-ia/o... : "Named for the Kansas or Kanza tribe of the Sioux family that lived along a river in the area and gave it the tribal name. The name translates as "south wind people," or "wind people.""
    KC Jazz: www.visitkc.com/visitors/thin...
"...While jazz began in the 1920s with a bang, it flourished in the 1930s, mainly as a result of political boss Tom Pendergast. During prohibition, he allowed alcohol to flow in Kansas City. As an entertainment center, Kansas City had no equal during these dry times..."
Duplicate Building: wikipedia : Omaha National Bank Building is same design as New York Life Insurance Company in Kansas City, Missouri
Term for Covered Entryways: Port a cochere or portico is the best I could find.

My Story: I'm a filmmaker by trade. In 2016, we sold our house to go traveling for the year in Europe. Since I couldn't work there, I decided to start another TH-cam Channel. I love walking as a way to explore and this was an easy thing to share. It got popular and I've continued. My goal is to share these treadmill travel videos to help your work out with virtual walks.

Kansas City (abbreviated KC or KCMO) is the largest city in Missouri by population and area. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had a population of 508,090 in 2020, and was the 36th most-populous city in the United States as of the 2020 census. It is the most populated municipality and historic core city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which straddles the Kansas-Missouri state line and has a population of 2,392,035. Most of the city lies within Jackson County, but portions spill into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at its confluence with the Kansas River coming in from the west. On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of the Kansas Territory. Confusion between the two ensued, and the name Kansas City was assigned to distinguish them soon after.
Sitting on Missouri's western boundary with Kansas, with Downtown near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, the city encompasses about 319.03 square miles (826.3 km2), making it the 23rd largest city by total area in the United States. It serves as one of the two county seats of Jackson County, along with the major suburb of Independence. Other major suburbs include the Missouri cities of Blue Springs and Lee's Summit and the Kansas cities of Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, and Kansas City, Kansas.
The city is composed of several neighborhoods, including the River Market District in the north, the 18th and Vine District in the east, and the Country Club Plaza in the south. Celebrated cultural traditions include Kansas City jazz, theater which was the center of the Vaudevillian Orpheum circuit in the 1920s, the Chiefs and Royals sports franchises, and famous cuisine based on Kansas City-style barbecue, Kansas City strip steak, and craft breweries.

Nice Video. I used it while biking inside! You were asking. Kansas City is named after the "Kansa" Indians. Kansas City was established long before Kansas was a state, which is also named after the Kansa Indian Tribe. It was originally the City of Kansas. So the city in Missouri was there before Kansas was even a state. Then later once Kansas became a state and development started happening on the KS side, several small suburbs on the Kansas side merged together to form KCK. KCK is basically a blue collar suburb of KCMO. It's very confusing to people outside the metro, but that's the basics of it. That's why nearly everything that KC is known for is actually in Missouri, not Kansas. Although there are now many large suburban areas in both MO and KS that make up the KC metro, but suburban KC is just like suburbia anywhere, it's places like this that make a city special and interesting.

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks so much for that information and I agree with you about the details making cities special. I love discovering all the little differences and things that make them special on these walks. Very interesting walk. I lived in Ft. Leavenworth KS. The problem with that whole area (both Kansas Cities), was there was a problem with the Crypts and the Bloods. They had some sponsored meetings trying to reach peace agreements. Even in our town, we went to the grocery store and noticed the news van outside. There was a gang shootout and the manager was caught in the middle and dived down and then crawled to where he could protect himself. Kansas city isnt technically split between kansas a missouri Kansas city was established before kansas was a state, and after kansas city became such a large city--Kansas attempted to annex the city. but missouri didnt let them obviously. After the failure they basically mooched off of our city and build really nice suburbs. a county on that side is more of an upper class group.
Kansas also has an issue taking buisnesses from kc. Offering no taxes which is an obvious choice for buisnesses which screws missouri over. They have taken a lot of corporate offices for franchises and all of that. created a lot of blue collar jobs which is what created the upper class county.
There's a lot of big plans for the city in the coming decades. A lot of plans like a new park in the downtown area, expanding the street car, and more buisnesses coming to the misouri side. The city is growing and becoming more well known through out the country. And from what ive heard a world cup event is supposed to be held here so hopefully more well known internationally.
All in all its a pretty cool city and hoopefully as it gets big the non natives stay away so our housing market stays at an affordable rate... That is in todays terms.

The place is lovely specially during the night most likely. But states in the South are not the kind of places that I like the most to be honest...I'm not sure why. But maybe the upper Midwest, yeah. And I'd love to see Virginia in person but that's all.

Too bad the city wasted a bunch of money on downtown , the city has had no job growth in years. The taxes are so high now and all the jobs are in Johnson county Kansas. The Missouri side consistently performs poorly compared to the Kansas side.

Last year jobs grew by 42,900 over the year same rate as the national increase.
The Jackson County, Missouri sales tax is 5.60%, Johnson County is 7.975%. Property tax in Missouri is .91%, Kansas is 1.29%

@@kungfujiujitsufliptrick4832 what does that have to do with downtown? And the Missouri side is relatively poorer compared to the Kansas side. Johnson county has a higher GDP.

@@kungfujiujitsufliptrick4832 I was saying downtown , like the power and light district was a waste of money and an economic failure that drains money from the city’s general fund each year. I was talking about sales taxes in the power and light district, which is actually the highest in the metro area at 12.5%.
