  • Who needs a boat lift when you have a tractor, backhoe and trailer?! Our boat has been anchored in Luperon, Dominican Republic for 7 months. The final step before sailing further South is to haul out for a fresh bottom job.

PS it is a year later and the bums budget is no longer a thing. We will share costs that we think are useful in our youtube videos. No pressure on becoming a Patron. We appreciate you taking time to watch our creations. This is just one example of our style. Learning by doing. It is admittedly a slow and painful process.

Joel and Michal, before you get discouraged by the negative comments remember... you’ve traveled to more places just in the last winter than any of these negative commenters will travel in their entire lives. You’ve sailed by dolphins, you’ve swam with sting ray, you’ve motorcycled through rain forest, you’ve slept on a beach under the stars, you’ve traveled over 1200 miles by sailboat for god sakes! The reason for sharing this via TH-cam was to inspire others to chase their dreams! And I’ve seen and heard several people who have done just that thanks to you guys and your commitment to delivering content.
It’s sad, but the only thing these negative comment people hate more than your content is their own lives. Don’t take what they say personally, they are only treating you the way they treat themselves...

David Angel thank you. To be honest there are a lot of positive and useful comments as well. We just focus on those ones and don't even pay attention to the negative ones. Sometimes we get a good laugh but no sweat. As you know it won't change what we do or believe in.

As there is prior evidence of keel repairs I would suggest to contact the previous owner and ask what was done and why. Also, check with the user forums to find out if half of the keel is supposed to be hollow. Checking keel bolts is a must. If you intend to drop the rudder look at your vertical clearance and see if you have to dig before starting. DEET is your friend.

Many lead keel boats have lead only on the leading edge, with a faring making up most of the keel, behind the lead. The faring should not be hollow but filled with closed cell foam. On my own Valiant-40, I found out, by drilling 1.75" holes in the faring, that they ran out of foam at the factory the day they made my keel. Now I am filling the voids with resin to gain the strength that part of the keel is supposed to have. I will have to watch and see what you do with your hollow.

@@Bumsonaboat Anywhere in between I reckon, nearer to 4 weeks than 2 years presumably, but guesswork by video ever was difficult from the beginning. 😂 As long as everything is stable and the keel doesn't wobble around under the boat (so nothing could work itself free in a chop) there's no need to get it done and dry completely this time - just sayin'. Only thing You should definitely avert is loosing the fin or the lead in rough conditions.

In South Carolina we would put Listerine (green regular stuff) into a spray bottle (not diluted) and spray our legs and arms. You smell good but more important the NoSeeUms and Skeeters leave you alone for hours. Nan (grandma) would spray damp towels with it and hang with a suspension type curtain rod in the middle of an open window at night. Kept them away and cooled the air coming in down.
Never seen a hollow keel before... I'd fill with concrete or mix of sand. Then glass over again and fair out.

Many sailboats did the empty keel trick!
The best way to deal with it is to open that area up! Dry it out! Close it up. Then fill it up with FG resin. It’s not really a structural repair. It just keeps water out!

My suggestion on the keel to avoid similar mishaps (and also from a grounding event) would be to remove the bottom 1 foot of what I would call the "Keel Fairing". That way, if you need to haul out in the future, one would never be able to load up the fairing the way it was this last time around. Also, if the keel was to be grounded, you would be unlikely to damage the weak fiberglass fairing in such a way that could cause a water leak into the hull..

Most keels are hollow in the aft area. Remember the lead in under the mast usually , so the keel needs even bearing surface not point load as done in the vid so sit on a plank evenly . Prop the boat as done and your ok , tap other keel t ascertain the lead area , drill a hole on the bottom of the hollow area , drain water for a few days , drill the odd hole just above the lead area and pour heaps of epoxy in flush off go sailing , some pump expanding foam in but you need a 2 inch hole in the right place , good luck

"Properly" here would be starting with a little patch, down in the bottom of the hole You ground in, and successively putting on slightly greater patches to ensure each patch has binding contact all around its edge to the surrounding laminate already existing. Check the owners web site / forums for tips on what is the proper fix for that keel. Someone else has had the same issue on your make of boat no doubt. Hollow in such a big area and down deep seems strange to me . While the bilge of a boat is often hollow and then the keel is bolted on to that it is odd to have the keel hollow at the bottom as if it is filled with air then it would try to float , the opposite of what you want a keel to do . If it is not ballast down that low it would normally be filled anyway . Tanks while common are not usually down that far , or made of glass.
What you may have is a cast iron keel encased in fiberglass so it does not rust and you may have some delamination going on , likely caused by minor water intrusion . Find out from the owners forums of your make of boat what you have and what is the fix . Looks to me to be labor intensive fix but not big dollars .
Do not put it back in the water until you are sure it is right . Loosing the keel at sea will kill you .

Again , owners forum is the place to go and someone will either tell them exactly what they have got and how to fix it as a known issue or they have a repair and they will be told how it is supposed to be . It could be that the bottom 2-3 inches of the keel were lost to a bad grounding and it was glassed in . That would also explain the broken stringers at the keel .

      @imabeliever244 5 ปีที่แล้ว

My next "guess" is that the extra buoyancy was compensated for when calculating the necessary keel weight, to end up with a net zero buoyancy from the hollow portion. At least, if I was designing it, that is what I would do. Eliminating drag would be important when designing a vessel that might have racing as a secondary use, and the eddy that would be created behind a flat trailing edge on the keel would certainly create drag.

Try and find the builder of your boat if possible,I’m guessing the keel was extended hence being hollow at the rear. She probably had too much Leeward motion when sailing hard on the nose so they lengthened the keel to alleviate this issue, just my thoughts but this is how it’s done. Also if this is a production boat their should be drawings on it with dimensions, also keels are never hollow the are usually filled with ballast of some type, lead, steel ingots, concrete or the like.
Measure up your underside and mark it on the topside, rope tabs on the safety rail, for when you got up on a lift again next year and measure the depth of the keel properly and write thatnext to the plotter and sounder, just a thought.Subbed and hoped you have fun, don’t let it kill the joy.

Damages was NOT due to hauling the boat but from the keel being soaked by osmosis… This takes huge work : removing the damaged part and building another keel … Fiberglassing on soaked parts will only aggravate the problem.
Most likely the part that doesn't sound hollow doesn't mean it's in good shape : it may only mean ballast is under. You don't wanna loose ballast when at sea !…
The boat has to dry at least for 3 to 6 months : the entire hull must be checked…

A lot of boats have voids in their keels; it is a function of how a boat is manufactured and is completely normal. When a boat is manufactured, the keel is created as a void when the hull is laid up in the mold. The keel ballast is then forged and dropped into the keel void and it is never a perfect fit. Of course you cannot pour molten metal into a fiberglass void because the fiberglass would melt away so that's why it is done that way. The other reason you might have a void in a keel is that the ballast that is required for a given hull design might be relatively small compared the hull and keel shape below the waterline. Therefore, the design might call for a void, because if you totally filled a larger keel with ballast, it might be too heavy and would create an unbalanced hull and keel set up. Modern racing and racer/cruiser boats have bolt-on keels which are a little different and are less likely to have voids, but your boat would not fit into this category. @@Bumsonaboat

Hey guys, so what you describe as-ballast not fiberglassed over-would indicate that you have a bolt-on keel as opposed to an encapsulated keel where the ballast is dropped into a preformed keel void and then sealed into place with fiberglass. These are the two types of keel construction, bolt-on and encapsulated. Your description of the keel is very similar to the boat "Sailing Uma" has. They have two videos that go into specific detail about some important maintenance issues related to this type of keel. I would highly recommend that you check them out. The first is video [step 11]. Scroll to 7:30 for the keel segment. You may also want to check out video [sep 137] where they pull their boat out of the water after almost three years and critique their previous keel repair and make improvements on it. Scroll to 2:00 for that segment. If you have further questions about issues that you run into while working on the bottom, it might be worthwhile to message "Sailing Uma" since they have been through it before and since you both have similar boats (vintage bolt-on, fin keeled, racer/cruisers).
