@jeremyriley1238 I definitely would say Afterlife is a Ghostbusters 3.
Like yes, it is the third installment of that universe.
Ghostbusters the video game is by far more of a Ghostbusters 3 than Afterlife is.
It literally continues from Ghostbusters 2.

To me, afterlife was more like a fourth movie than a third installment, really. I wish they did do that but that would probably confuse the majority of people that have sadly not played the game. It's also sadly. The reason it didn't do so well because the lack of marketing I bet
I'm glad they did remastered it though. Still should be canon it even properly explained about everything about shandor and the moods line, which probably has a connection between gozar and vigo I always knew there was a connection between them and that she helped vigo rise ine power@HeyJay2000

There's also another major issue that put the brakes on ghostbusters 3 and played a roll in Bill Murray rejecting anything to do with it. From my understanding him and Harold Ramis weren't on good terms after making the movie "groundhogs day." There was a lot of friction on set between them and they had a falling out and weren't on speaking terms up until Harold Ramis became ill and was close to passing away.

I believe it was in Netflix's Ghostbusters episode of "The Movies That Made Us" where Ramis' daughter said Murray went to Chicago toward the end of Harold's life, stopped by a police station, asked if they could take him to see Harold (they hadn't spoken in so long, he didn't know where Ramis lived anymore), they did, and the two made up before Harold's passing. As a lifelong Ghostbusters fan, that story had me in tears.

I quite enjoyed Afterlife, but in my ideal world, Ghostbusters 3 would have been made in 1991 or 1992 or something, and Ghostbusters 4 would have been a reunion movie made around 2011/2012 with the original cast coming back for one last adventure (along the lines of Star Trek VI:The Undiscovered Country).
2016 and 2022 would have been next generation movies with a handover to a new crew carrying on the legacy.

When I first heard about the all female Ghostbusters I was very excited about it. I thought it would be a cool new take on it and be different enough that people who loved the original wouldn't feel like it was stepping on any toes and it could be a whole new awesome thing. BUUUUUUUUUUUT the problem with it wasn't that it was four female characters, the problem was that it was horribly written and directed and was complete garbage. Truly disappointing.

This video essay conjured up a memory that before it went into production, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey had the working title of "Bill and Ted go to Hell". I don't know how many changes were made from the original draft from what we got (since there's at least one Hell sequence in the finished product), but it might make for an interesting essay if there's any information to mine about it.

I think Hellbent could have been an interesting films, not sure through if it would have been successful as it sounds much more like a horror film with the Ghostbusters in it than a Ghostbusters films. I will disagree with a couple things you said. Saying the Ghostbusters audience is mostly male isn't exactly true, it also has a large female component. The fact that they didn't support the film either shows no one wanted this film. With Afterlife, it is actually a pretty good show. I have never seen Stranger Things, it has 0 appeal to me despite growing up in the 80s but I thought tying Afterlife back to the original film like that was a good way to restart things. Considering they are making a sequel to it and not dropping it like thr 2016 film, it couldn't have been all bad.

The actors themselves were good, but the marketing and press releases were a terrible way to market a movie. The same was with netflixs Cowboy Bebop, they literally said that fans are stupid, so how did they expect people to feel?

Re-release "Ghostbusters The Video Game" as a realistic CGI movie and name it "Ghostbusters 3", "Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent", or just "Ghostbusters: Hellbent". There, problem solved. "Ghostbusters: Afterthought"... uh, I mean, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" was absolutely terrible. It was a piece of shit, and nothing more than a bandaid to the (all female-cast) one. I didn't bother with the 2016 one and only saw Afterthought once, and that was it! No need to buy it, cause I have NO desire to EVER see that crap again!

THANK YOU for calling 'Afterlife' out for what it is. Everything you said about it in this piece is what I said. The fandom was so desperate for something--ANYTHING that wasn't 2016's 'Answer the Call,' they put nostalgia blinders on because 1) We finally see the old gang of Ray, Peter, Winston & Egon (postumously) reunited & 2) Because many saw Afterlife as a last attempt at truly reinvigorating the franchise.
I had a sense of that from the trailers & preview clips with the mini pufts, so even though I'm a die hard GB fan, I didn't see it theatrically. Eventually, when I did watch it, that third act confirmed every fear. It was cringy, eyeroll inducingly BAD.
Ghostbusters is one those films that even though it deals in the fantastic, it's still very grounded in reality. The most real aspect of everything being the passage of time. There was a window for a true 3rd film & we all saw it slip away thanks to Bill Murray. The End.

I think Ghostbusters 3 should've began at The White House, similar to X-Men 2, where the staff witness poltergeist activity and the president encounters a ghost.
It's revealedthere are numerous amateur ghostbusters throughout the country. Some are good at catching ghosts; others are not.
The President requests the original Ghostbusters team- the real Ghostbusters- to come to the white House to solve the problem. The president explains that he was in Manhattan during the events of Ghostbusters 2 and was there when the fhostbusters brought the statue of liberty to life.
The 4 original ghostbusters are invited to the white House where they investigate.
I think a precise like that would've been good and had potential for some memorable comedy

I hated Gb ATC but I really enjoyed Afterlife. Been a fan since the first movie hit UK tv in Xmas 1987 - and have been very overly protective of the franchise. But I think that Afterlife was a great follow up. Appreciate it follows many of the same beats of the first movie but there is a ritual to the coming of Gozer so you couldn’t avoid the Keymaster/Gatekeeper vibe. Thing is you have to move the story onto a younger cast as so much has changed for the originals. So it was always going to feel like a coming of age movie in some way. The only comparison to `stranger things is Finn Wolfhard. If Trevor had been cast by anyone else this comparison wouldn’t be so prevalent. Great video though 👍🏻

The year Harold Ramis passed away was also the year Robin Williams passed away. I loved both of them, but I was upset with how little time they paid homage to Harold Ramis during the 2014 Academy Awards recap that year of actors that have passed away because Robin Williams got the majority of the tribute time, followed by Paul Walker. Both were great and deserving of the tributes they received but Harold barely got any and it was frustrating to see that, as Harold should have had more time then he received.

I watched fans crying at the end of that movie, not sure why your opinion is worth anything here, look at the sales of Afterlife and then this critic might want to rethink his opinion. I think we now need to have critics of the critics, many opinions of movies these days are so far off that you really should just ignore them.

Man, original few movies was the best. Everything else sucks. Well, except cartoons but that's another story. And the latest Ghostbusters movie is just... meh. It is not even Ghostbusters movie because, we don't even get the proper action until the very end of the movie. And honestly, I don't like it. It was just a waste of time. Because, you watch half of the movie a boring talking between the characters and only then they slowly starting to give you the ghostbusting action. And that action should have started long before the middle of the movie and the movie should end on a big bang, making everybody dropping their jaw. But nope. The writers for the movie completely missed the point of what Ghostbusters should have been. Thus, I don't even understand, how that Ghostbusters movie with the kids got successful. Cause it is boring right until the last part of the movie.

For me the first is the better of the saga, but also the second is very good.... We know that for years Murray surely don't wanted to do the third, and after the sad dead od Harold Ramis for me the question was closed. No original cast, no Igon, nevermore Ghostbusters movie. Instead the reboot, then Murray, who I don't know why, changes his mind and agrees to make two really poor sequels like 3 and 4. Personally I don't even consider the last two film like a real part of the original saga. I don't know how would been Hellbent, but surely better than the third. However, I still think that without Ramis the saga are finished.

Farking stray mouse and this site NOT remembering the three paragraphs I just wrote!! GGRRR..........
I was unaware that there was a script with adult Oscar and ghost Peter. I had a similar situation in the GB3 fanfic I wrote. It must have been on the heels of Harold's death, as I included his passing in it. It starts out a couple years after GB2, with the disappearance of Peter and Dana on their way to set up a franchise team in NOLA.
In the present, Ray, Winston, and Janine were getting too old for this stuff, and are about to pass the torch to a new generation.
Adult Oscar would have been Seth Rogen. Kylie from XGB I think I had planned for Rosario?
A homeless man (Galifianakis) who had taken up residence in the alley behind the firehouse was humored by the team, unaware he was psychic, drawn to the Big Trap and was always talking to the ghosts inside. and Venkman.
I think I had planned to include Winston's nephew/niece, as well?
The Big Bad of the film would have been the Cult of Shandor, trying to carry out Ivo's masterplan of Hell on Earth.
They only stop the Cult with the help of the franchisees, played in cameos by the GH/GHI teams, among others.
Oscar and the team get closure on Peter and Dana in the end.

it's unbelievable how many great ideas and awesome cast options have been wasted for this franchise. In my opinion, the comedians from the early 2000s SNL would have been the best choice for a third movie, but also some from The Office cast would have been amazing, can you imagine someone like Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson and Will Ferrell together as Ghostbusters, with Aykroid and the others, all in the same movie? it would have been the best grossing movie of all times. The hell with Murray, they had an endless choice of good actors to replace him and it would have been just fine, at least we would have had a third movie when the brand was still relevant and we wouldn't have the crap we got nowadays, because honestly, the new Reitman reboots are as much irrelevant as the hideous Paul Feig reboot. Even though his actor is sadly dead, but there's a bunch of actors that have played.Older versions of kid actors that did not reprise their roles. So I don't see how it would be a bad immoral decision Like I would really love to see that movie.Honor him like the last two honored, herald and ivan.

I should note the script for this movie, GB Hellbent is floating around, co written by Aykroyd and Tom Davis. It’s awful. Like…really bad. The core idea is good but the movie itself is just awful. There’s a character in the script whose 12 years old and is head of the GB’s research team and he’s described has having a brain so big it deformed his cranium. I’m serious. The kid is a genius but…yikes. Not only that but the new team of GB’s are all interchangeable and are so arch. There’s not near enough character stuff and there’s waaay too much Ghostbusting and spectacle. It doesn’t read like a comedy. Aykroyd needs someone like Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman to reign him in. He’s a good idea guy. But this script is awful

First I love your channel. I have to disagree on some things. I think the Hell idea was not good, and I can see how this could alienate much of the fanbase. That said, the idea of God being Bill Murray is actually quote funny. Maybe if the film wasn’t set in hell but they glimpsed it - with glasses or something. I agree GB2 was a rehash (Star Wars Ep VII) but I don’t think you can stray too far. I liked GB Afterlife, as it does bring in new elements - like coming of age - but keep some familiar ideas. The concept of tying up Ivo Shandor and Gozer brings the story full circle and we have the torch passed on to a new generation - literally. My fear, however, is the sequel here….
