    What do you prefer, fixing up older vehicles and keeping them on the road or buying something brand new and why?

    • @iancrosson9513
      @iancrosson9513 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Fixing up "older", or anything not new. Why because it's only way I can justify having owned 30+ cars in my lifetime; if I kept buying new I would be in crazy debt. Job gave me a new company car couple years back that I still have and I still don't understand wanting a brand new car. Jeez and maybe too because no mechanics are allowed to touch my cars. I think that's typical of any current or past professional mechanics.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I've literally never bought anything brand new and I don't think I ever will.

    • @Powerhauz
      @Powerhauz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haven't bought a car brand new and previous to this year only bought cars from the 90's. Being only $5k into 3 different vehicles over 3 years is a better trade than one $40k car's unknown problems. Also I don't take them to mechanics either. I can do pretty much everything in my own garage. Much preferred used and self kept.

      A couple of days ago. 11 brand new BMW E34s surfaced here , in Bulgaria. Now that is a brand new car a want. Unfortunatly they are going for around 15 000 euros ...

    Great video, I did one a few years back, getting ready to do it again. I ended up getting that crank bolt loose by running the breaker bar through the upper control arm and quickly turning the engine over. It worked but was a bit dodgy, just in case someone doesnt have the tools to get it loose

    Good job! Having done a couple 430's I would say I rate the overall job more hours on Lexus, but easier. Miata I was not very pleased with the putting on the belt and timing alignment. For future if you purchase a chain wrench it will work on any pulley removal you run into so you don't have a collection of one off expensive specialty tools.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ian! Yeah, the Miata belts you have to really get down on eye level to align the marks correctly. It's easy to be off a tooth and not realize it looking at it from a downward angle.

    A pair of large tongue and groove pliers did the trick for me to hold the fan clutch while loosening the nuts. Just open the jaws wide and clamp two adjacent nuts with one pair of pliers while you loosen one of the other two. Don't remove the nuts until they are all loose.

    Great video! I am looking at getting a gx470 so this is great insight and very similar to the 2jz timing belt water pump change. The job can look intimidating but the knowledge and confidence gained by doing it yourself is priceless and can be passed along to other similar cars and trucks. Just curious but does this engine have cam and a front crank seal that can be changed during this process? I know on my 2jz I did these seals when I was in there, thanks.

  • @terryjohnson7572
    @terryjohnson7572 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The 1st mistake I see so far is crank on TDC. But I did theses for 23 years. It's a interfering engine. The correct way is when you get the crank TDC and cams lined up. Move crank notch to the pointer. This is 45 degrees off of TDC. Note where your cam notches are lined up. If using Toyota parts, belt is marked, just remember, passenger side is R, driver is L. I removed radiator. Putting a little pressure on them can cost you. I replaced all timing components with new. You can all ways find the your manual for a small fee using Toyota, Lexus public website. Same as we used. All manufacturers have this information. TIS.

    Nice video, the Lexus Dealership here in Reno Nevada just quoted me $1,440 for the work and replacements you just did. Not sure their bid included the new pulley, tensioner, and radiator hoses either? Do you think they are over charging me? When you put the O-ring onto the water inlet housing and installed it, did you place any RTV or seal packing after that? If not, has the o-ring done a good job of sealing? The reason I ask is b/c I just took my inlet housing off and they had RTV and an o-ring. Thanks

    Process is the same as 1uzfe. The easiest way of removing the crank bolt is to soak it with WD40 and let it sit for a night then use impact gun. I didn't use any special tools for removal of crank pully bolt.

    Great video! Nice car. A question that it's puzzling me: well, the car has 87K and the T-belt is serviced every 90K or every 5 years. The car was always serviced by Lexus. Then I guess they should've replaced the T-belt several times on this 20 year old vehicle. However, there are no stickers (?) in the engine bay with the date and mileage of the last T-belt replaced. Maybe I am wrong but otherwise we can assume that the belt inside is the original that came from the factory ... WOW ... If that's the case it's just amazing it's in such a good shape after 20 years!!

      Yeah I couldn't find anything indicating it was done, but the belt that came out was totally fine. I think this car was consistently garaged given it's condition.

      I'm not sure what you are asking. The 2UZ was designed to use a timing belt, not chain.

    Oops, bad compression rings sign, 30:37 coolant should not move during engine start.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is not a sign of bad compression, engine spins the waterpump when it runs. Compression is fine. It's been 20k miles since this video and engine has been running without a hiccup.
