Just a heads up. Common misunderstanding. The LX does not have air suspension, it is hydraulic. Hence the second reservoir by the firewall on the passenger side. You can see accumulators and hydraulic lines throughout the underside of the LX. Any LC/LX equipped with AHC is hydraulic.

Came here to comment the same 👍🏼. Also, based on the rusty bolts in the engine bay I’d hate to see the underside of this one.

I think maybe because the GX does have air bag suspension and most people don’t even know their different cars haha

I love seeing Land Cruisers on the road. The styling is subtle, but I know that the owners bought them for the quality and understated luxury. Land Cruisers are pretty expensive, even used, but it's a stealth wealth car. With routine maintenance, the only thing that can kill a Land Cruiser is rust. 200k miles on a Land Cruiser is like 50k on a normal car. I heard somewhere that whereas a normal car is designed to last 7-10 years (or until the warranty runs out), the Land Cruiser is designed to last 25. It's a shame they get such poor gas mileage.
You mentioned that you didn't see the point of the 200-series LC being $85k and identical inside to an LX470. It's for people who could afford a Mercedes GLS or Lexus LX or Cadillac Escalade but don't want to be seen in one. No one looks twice at a Toyota that looks like a big Highlander. It's for people that want a nice, reliable, luxurious SUV but don't want to flaunt their wealth.

Riding in my 99 LX now, by far the best SUV out there even at 23 years old. If you're driving around town yes, the mileage isn't great. Buy on a highway road trip it's no worse than most other SUVs. And, if you own one of these you weren't concerned about the mileage anyway, that's why we have separate commuter vehicles. I still prefer the 100 series over the new model, which unfortunately did away with the tailgate and the large rear windows.

The important number for a large SUV is torque. The 98 Lx470 has 320 ft lbs. They asked TRD for a bullet proof engine and that is what they got. It’s a former IRL engine that can handle up to 1,000 hp. They replaced the aluminum block with a cast iron one for reliability. My 98 has KO2s and is a beast.

My mom had a ‘98 lx470 when I was growing up and it was the best, most reliable car. It’s the car I learned to drive on. Thanks for this video!

Originally the 2UZ-FE engine was supposed to be an airplane engine. It is a tank. As long as you do the timing belt service every 90k
Also, hold the window up button until it’s fully closer, if it’s going down on you automatically.

  • @CACressida

230hp in a truck engine in 1998 was a lot. The Lincoln Navigator with 5.4L made sluggish 300hp and the Cadillac Escalante made 255hp with 5.7 liters.
LXs use Hydraulic suspension, not air. This is an important correction to make because air suspension is pretty unreliable and the Hydraulic suspension is way more durable for hardcore use offroad.

I actually think the first-gen LX470 is by far the best looking Toyota SUV ever made overall. Much better engine than the old Land Cruiser, and still squarish and muscular in a way that none of the later generations were. This was the sweet spot in LC development, IMO.

90's Lexus products just aged so well, just an update to their infotainment and they still rival today's Lexus in style and grace.

I have the 1999 version. It's basically the same. What makes this vehicle so great is it lasts. It's rugged, tough, and rides smooth. Mine has 179,400 miles on it and it has no issues. The engine is reliable and solid. If you want a car that will last for years this is the vehicle for you.

Whether or not you decide to review a 06/07 MY LX, I'd highly recommend you to test drive one. It's so much refined for the Gen. The acceleration is pure joy with that roaring V8. Interior was beautiful updated & hate that I parted ways with mine.

The 2003-2007 were better driving SUVs than the early ones. The 4.7 also got a power increase to 275HP in 2005 and a five speed automatic transmission, which for some reason the smaller GX with the exact same engine got from its first year in 2003. Plus, I believe the Lexus GX/Toyota Prado is the actual poor man's land cruiser. The land cruiser has never been much cheaper than the LX. I forgot to add, this was known as the Toyota Land Cruiser Cygnus in Japan, as in the exact same front end minus the logo and chrome treatment.

Yes but 2003+ go for double the price idk if it's worth that much for you but just something to aware of

    • @marcanderson3498
      @marcanderson3498 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

2003-2005 had 235hp. 2006-2007 had 275hp. Also with the 2003-2007 trucks you’re stuck with an ancient nav screen that also houses the climate controls. I’d take an early truck LC or LX all day. To each their own, the 100 Series in general might be the best car of all time.

  • @erich964

You are close you almost nailed it. Durability and reliability is not the number one reason why they are so expensive. They are so absolutely expensive because of the overbuilt engineering that goes into them. They are designed for a 25 year life. Aside from that the resale value is the best in the car market. It’s like the Rolex of cars. You always have some thing that you can sell and people will pay a premium for. Sidenote drive ability and capability it’s the greatest of all time. But all of those things together and that’s why they cost over 100 grand new

The AHC actually doesnt allow you to ride in low. Itll move itself up after 19mph or so. Low is mostly used to load passengers.

@Oneway 18 @Oneway 18 @Oneway 18 damn they deleted my prior comment because link lol
It'll be fine long as it's been properly maintained. Good thing about Lexus vehicles you can check the records for free on a site. I can't put link because this set it that way. The major things are has the hydraulic suspension been repaired or changed to strut/spring. Timing belt/water pump every 100k, and rust if up north. I've owned several always regret selling buy another one. Miles ranged from 160k to 375k never had major issues but pick the nice ones there's plenty for sale

These Land Crusiers still sell for lots of money. They are expensive, but they can last forever and are built with the strongest quality materials and durable capability. Surprisingly they don't sell much in America.
The Lexus LX sells a bit better than the Land Crusier though, because of the price tag of a luxury suv.
The LC costs about 85k, and some people care about name brand. With 85k One could buy a Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes GL, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX56 etc.
The car community loves this Land Cruiser generation. It aged well.

Just a consideration, the engine noise in the background of the voiceover is very distracting. I don't think the sound of you driving while showing interior shots adds anything to the production.

Those weren't sold in the US. But if he can find an imported '96 or '97 model (you can't import a car into the US if it's younger than 25 years), it would be cool to see.
