That's actually a very neat burner to make even outside this project also, for a cheap burner, they sure made a better one than the Bic version. I think i went through 9 of those before i switched to a higher end one.
man this is soooo cool , i wish i could afford a lathe , ive been trying to build one out of salvaged parts from a few old break lathes and some other machines ive been collecting but i think in order to get the precision and the know how that ill end up having to buy one used , awesome video and like the other guy said , your a master on that lathe

Out of interest, how far off being sufficient was this burner? I know you had to change it. I am planning a small boiler myself, but it will be running a far lower rpm engine. Keep up the great work!
This Gas tank should have a Hydraulic Test to 600psi. This assumes a worst case scenario of using Propane in the tank. This can be done at a Model Engineering Society, who will have the correct Equipment. They should also issue a Test Certificate. There are now set of Regulations which require such Tests to be carried out. Likewise there are a set of Tests for Boilers.

myfordboy hot air flow will goes up.Just one piece of aluminium foil or wood will protect well from infrared rays.Sorry for my eanglish,im from Russia and try to speak without translators =)

I am also building a butane tank for a 3/4" traction engine right now. I was wondering if there should be a siphon tube on the burner fitting to supply the burner with liquid butane instead of the gas from the top of the tank? I know if I turn my tank/burner upside down the flame is about double in size!
+myfordboy Thanks for the reply! I could not find information on this subject anywhere, when I dis-assembled a butane lighter for a bbq grill I noticed they used a wick inside the tank. Thats great news because I did not want to take mine apart again.
+bolitho h Sorry misunderstood. It's a Sievert torch. I bought a Craftsman set years ago. It has about 6 different burners, regulator and hose. There is an economy setting so you can keep a pilot light lit controlled by a seperate knob.

+stxrynn My top tip for silver soldering is to use a large enough blowtorch to heat the job up quickly and reflux any preciously made joints.

+aserta I was looking at a Dremel brand table-top burner, and I think MFB's version is nicer and a great alternative.

The torch as a burner for this model did not produce enough heat. if you look at the later videos you will see i switched to an external burner.

I hope you have more luck with that burner flow valve than I did, sometimes I have to turn it several turns just to get the flow to start.

+Thomas Reed It's a Sievert torch, comes with different burners. The largest i have puts out 84Kw of heat.

+scott k You need gas at the burner not liquid so I would say take the gas from the top of the tank.

The chuck will take 1.125" but the 2 morse taper spindle limits the size to about 0.600" for longer lengths.
