  • ►If you're just starting the research phase or if you're actively in the purchasing process, this video covers what you need to know about differences between the models of the Mercedes-Benz W211 chassis. Kyle Bascombe, the Mercedes-Benz Catalog Manager here at FCP Euro, touches on the model designations, trim packages, petrol engine variants, brakes, suspension, and interior options available across the W211 spectrum. We will have a separate video to dive into the S211 and diesel variations in the future!

    2024 here! We have a 2004 E320 w/225k miles!!! Still on the road! Just passed smog and ready to break necks. Just recently decided to give it some love and keep her going! The interior is just a big hug that one needs in California traffic.

    I have a 2009 E550 with AMG sports package. It has the 5.5 L V8 engine. Its a great car that I have come to love. The interior is exactly like one of those showed in this video. Browns and cream colors. Exterior is a dark grey metallic. Mine currently has 90k miles and my MB mechanic indicates it should easily last to 200 K or more.

    a lot of the stuff applies only to the w211 exported to the states. in europe we had airmatic on the facelifted models. we had dynamic seat as well for the facelift. another thing u forgot to mention that was a huge part of the w211 range... diesels. they sold probably 3 times more diesels in w211 than petrol.

  • @rainbowwarrior2635
    @rainbowwarrior2635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You left out the best aspect of the W211. The 2005-2006 E320 CDI. That was the best motor in that car with sensotronic. One the main reasons to buy a W211 is the CDI, man what a sweet motor. 40mpg with as much torque at the 5.5liter V8. and if you want more just chip it. These motors are easily capable of over 500lbs of torque in stock trim, with the 5 speed auto to handle it. I really love the diesel power, it's so refined to have a motor that can make so much muscle so casually. It's really a better motor then a V8, it's better balanced, the V8 is to big, the inline 6 really is a better source of power in the range that you will realistically be driving the car. The V8 will win in a sustained drag race, but it doesn't matter because the turbodiesel can sustain similar levels of top speed continuoulsy over a long term using much less gas and also in just stop light drag races or in traffic in a shot from 50mph to 110 the diesel has similar acceleration. But yeah if you're the highway travelling a long distance the diesel is a much faster motor then the V8 because it's casually able to give full performance, continuously without using a lot of gas. Plus it runs on biodiesel. And then outside of American you had four options, the 2.2liter inline 4 with 130hp that got over 50mpg, the 2.7and 2.8 liter inline five with 160hp which was a real sweet spot in the range, then the 3.2liter inline 6 which was probably the best engine mercedes ever made, and the very rare 4.0liter V8 with 260hp, with was subsequently outperformed by the later V6's bluetec motors. I'll also say I love sensotronic and nowadays with the warrantee it doesn't matter about reliability, if you buy a car with senostronic and it break mercedes will tow the car to their dealership for free, and fix the system for free, and one they're fixed they're very reliable. Yeah the brake peddle has kind of a plastic like feel, you can see it hard to make micro modulation of brake force, but when you're actually driving the car, sensotronic represents such a performance advantage in braking. It's a shame they gave up on the idea although they continued with it for their commercial trucks where not only have independent control of 4 wheels, but 6 or 8 wheels was an even bigger advantage.

    The w211 CDI w/ om648.961 inline 6 (last of iron block) diesel engine was the BEST car I ever owned by far & I'm on the hunt for another one. The SBC brakes failed on me @ highway speed (not fun) so glad to see MBUSA step up with 25 yr. coverage on those. A rare feature to look for & covet after is a passenger side fold down rear seat that will allow for long items like fishing poles to pass through the trunk into passenger compartment. Dynamic seats are nice feature also.

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on who you ask! Kyle (our Mercedes Catalog Manager) might tell you to get the E55, however, Gareth (BMW Catalog Manager) might say to go with the M5. The M5 does have a naturally aspirated V10 vs the Supercharged V8 in the E55. I would say drive both and see which one you like better. I can tell you the E55 is arguably more reliable than the E60 M5, however, the M5 is more of a raw performance machine vs the E55 being a fast cruiser.

    This is a fantastic primer - well done! Unlike a review, this is unbiased and spot on. Just some Nit-nerdery:
    - All W211s had integrated turn signals in the mirrors. Another good way to spot the facelift, look for the "arrow head" shape of the bumper: there is a sharp crease in the middle (as shown in your lovely photography).
    - Aside from the 722.901, all .9 boxes derive much of their internals from the AMG-fettered .6 box, incl. locking torque converter for all forward gears, and quicker shift times.
    - Xenon headlamps were optional on all models. Look for the little flaps between each round light on either side of the car to find them. Bi-Xenon was 2006+.
    - SBC Hold is not, by default, enabled for US-models, use Star Diagnose to enable. To activate, depress the brake, and when stopped, tap it just a bit harder, then let go. The dash will show "SBC Hold."
    - AIRMatic in these is AIRmatic Dual Control, which is different from AIRMatic used in the W220. It is, reportedly, more reliable than AIRMatic used elsewhere.
    - The E350 you show has the Sport package, which has the larger 18" wheels, and the revised bumper. The sport package adds the bluish tint, so it is available on all W211.

      there's literally a TON of information I expected to hear that went badly amiss. Even the way to tell the difference between facelift and non facelift I expected him to advise NOT to consider the bumpers or grill since these are common upgrades for non facelifted cars and to look at the side view mirrors and steering wheel as these are a dead giveaway in basically every case of whether or not it's the facelift version. He didn't even mention the change in styling for the headlights and tailights of the facelift which are basically the MOST OBVIOUS difference between both types. I'm not pleased that FCP Euro of all ppl put out this video. I expect these guys to know their stuff.

    Hi there, good day all the way from South Africa. So I bought a W211 recently and due to lack of knowledge, I cut off the cables and removed the dock for the Bluetooth device in the glove compartment as the vehicle didn't come kitted with the dongle. Now I'm trying to get the car to give me audio again but the bypassing of the tele aid won't help. What do I have to do please, is there a way I can restore the audio for the car after cutting the dongle dock cables?

    I love this model with oval headlight but I’m scared to get one for these problems. Any advice? I was thinking of the W212 but it’s interior is really not as W211 quality. I love the AMG but I need the 4MATIC which was introduced in the latest model s, that’s out of my budget for now.

    The pre-facelift W211 E350 AvantGarde (first made 02/2005) though it may not have the “sport” kit, still has lowered sport suspension that’s a good compromise between ride and upgraded handling. The Elegance badged cars have higher ride height and presumably a traditionally superb MB ride, as experienced in the awesome W124 300E. Both pre-and post ‘facelift’ models had integrated LED turn signals-the difference in the mirrors is between rounded and squared shapes. The Elegance models had the silver grille with abbreviated spoilers all round-the AvantGarde’s had a different front spoiler, black grille slats and larger side-skirts. Of course, there are significant binnacle and timber treatments-and we’re not mentioning differences of ‘Classic’ low-end W211s…

    I am currently dealing with a misfire on cylinder 6 on my 2007 E350. I tested the coils and they're working. I also swapped spark plugs and its still cylinder 6 that's misfiring so it's neither the plugs or the ignition coils. Any suggestions?
    Edit: I absolutely love the the W211. Mine has the optional appearance package with the 18in multi-spoke rims (245 front/265 rear), chrome accents for the fog lights, exposed dual exhaust, and silver backed instrument cluster with white dials. That car gets me compliments all the time and it's just SO BEAUTIFUL in my eyes.

    • @star500e
      @star500e 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jacobus van Bindsbergen: It's not quite cut and dry. Firstly, don't discount the earlier models: the M112/M113 motors and 722.6 5-speed are very reliable with only routine maintenance. They tend to eat mounts, and they have 2-plugs per cylinder. The E350 is, however, the most plentiful and therefore, probably the wisest choice.
      Als U in Europa wohnt, dan is het meschien ook goed bij die 4-cyl modellen of 4-cylinder diesel modellen te kijken. In die VS, krijgen wij die niet.

    Hi,
    Thank you for this precious information!
    I have a question. I own a 08 E 350 4MATIC with 169k miles and one issue I have with it is that when the weather is cold, it shifts weird. Second and third gear do not transition smoothly, forth and fifth gear are fine. It even jerks/pulls when it shifts and it makes some sort of grinding noise for only a few seconds when that happens. It usually happens when it’s less than 40F outside. Has anyone had an issue like mine? What was the solution or what could the source?
    Thank you in advance!!!!

    I sold my 2005 e320 and immediately regretted it so I went out and bought a 2009 e350 AMG sport. W211 is the best balanced platform ever. Love it.
    Only issue that’s common on these cars is the plastic actuator arms break causing misfires and check engine lights. If not fixed immediately you can clog your cats. It’s required removal of the install manifold, but the good news is you can get an aluminum version on amazon for like $40 bucks and it will be a permanent solution.
    Also the SAM (signal acquisition module) on this era of Mercedes can be crummy sometimes. If you have electrical gremlins, take a heat gun to the circuit board and most problems will go away.
