US-China tariffs force China to be creative, analyst says

  • The Biden administration has enacted a new set of tariffs against China that will hit up to $18 billion in imported goods, including quadrupling the duties imposed on electric vehicles (EVs) and doubling tariffs on solar panels and semiconductors to 50% each.
Bernstein Managing Director and Senior Analyst Stacy Rasgon joins The Morning Brief to elaborate on whether or not these trade policies will have any lasting effects on the United States, its demand for semiconductor imports, and the new avenues China is approaching to acquire more AI chips.
"The US just doesn't import a lot of direct semiconductors from China... it's maybe a few billion dollars, it's not any more than that. So there's no direct impact," Rasgon says. "Now the indirect impact, you know again risks of further escalation... like counter like actions from China... those have been the issues that we've been dealing with over the last several years. By and large, they have been manageable."

      Ironic.
When US auto makers were making record profits from the 80's to most recently selling cars in China no one said a thing.
Fast forward to today. All of sudden China can make as of a good car the American... politician call the cars manufacture in China a threat, tariff at 100%.
Then there is the over capacity ??? What does that even mean. If that is the case then S.Korea, European auto makers and Japan are also at overcapacity. They export millions of cars to the world each year.
The reality is the US can not complete. So they have to resort to these dirty tactics. Why wasn't there overcapacity when Ford, GM were making record profits and manufacturing cars in China ? Can you say American hypocrisy ? 🤔
I'm old enough to recall in the 80's and 90's here in North America. People were Not purchasing American cars. They were garbage. The cars were full of defect and was always in the shops for one reason or another.
The big three weren't able to compete with the Japanese auto makers. So the US politician were against the Japanese auto makers like they are doing to China's auto makers today. Look up all the anti Japanese rhetoric from the 80's and 90's. History rhymes.

The host is right. Chips are going to be manufactured in other countries anyway. They are supposed to be cheaper and better even it means they will be made in China. It’s not a new thing so don’t bother 😂 The states should focus on the real new things, like nuclear fusion, quantum computing, AI, MRNA tech.

Despite massive outsourcing by US corporations to PRC, PRC government has remained an economic FOE and military FOE! No amount of economic cooperation nor diplomacy will make PRC government an ally of USA or any nation! PRC's diplomacy is coercive and deceptive. PRC's cut-throat trade practices and economic aid/loans to other countries filled with debt traps. Japan's geopolitical conduct, on the other hand, abandoned its imperialistic stance, no territories, practices friendly economic competition, no debt traps, outsourced its massive automobile industry to other countries (USA, Canada, and other countries) to provide employment, and a true ally! Japanese government genuinely protected its people by postponing the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (sabotaged by the covid-19 epidemic) because the Japanese officials listened to its medical experts/people, put down their pride and honor, risked billions of US dollars worth of investments, profits and revenues in order to protect the people of Japan. Did Xi postpone the Beijing Winter Olympics??? NO!
