For a Brit who would find it difficult to get over there I found the tour invaluable. I also enjoy the western theatre battles and would really appreciate a tour of the Corinth battlefield.
Thanks, Andrew! We live on the east coast and are fortunate to be close enough to many of the battlefields out here. Would love to get out to see some of the western battles like Nashville, Stones River, Shiloh, or Corinth.
Thanks chaps, the reply was a very pleasant surprise. I am currently working on playing the AoF Corinth scenario in 3mm using the Peter Pig ACW Naval range of figure blocks. Still have some cavalry, infantry, artillery and scenic pieces to produce, then play the game and write an article for ACW Gamer. Then it is back to 6mm for Antietam.

As for other battlefields to document, how any of those around Richmond? Sure Petersburg gets most of the attention but the Seven Days battlefields, Yellow Tavern, Travillian Station are all worthwhile.

And another narrative of Antietam that completely brushes past the carnage and pivotal action of the West Woods.

Antietam is one place to visit where we didn't hire a guide and wish we did. The over-all action is more spread out than it seems or one can imagine. It's not expensive to hire a guide and it's money well spent. Civil War battlefields and the surrounding areas have a lot more history to offer than what you may have studied your entire life. It's a much more comprehensive story than the history books tell you.

A refreshing, balanced view of the battle, fair to both sides. Thank you for including the Confederate information. With many documentaries, they are viewed almost like inconvenient, annoying sideshow interlopers. There were brave men and cowards on both sides, but all deserve to have their stories told.

Thanks for this different view. I have been fascinated by Antietam since someone bought me the Talon “Battlefield Antietam” pc game. (Always using it to try out different scenarios) Also good to find out how to pronounce some of the commanders names. Megahertz, I have always pronounced “Meeker”) I have a sabbatical next year and hope to visit Maryland and see it for myself!

Just brilliant. Some war of independence battlefield tours would be excellent.
It will be later in the series, but we definitely do visit a big AWI battlefield and provide the same kind of tour! We are fortunate living here in the mid-Atlantic that we are within easy driving distance of many AWI and ACW battlefields!
Just a few observations. McClellan was not incompetent. He accomplished his campaign objectives, Lee did not. There are more than 5 Southern monuments on the field (at least 12 counting mortuary cannon and Maryland monuments to Maryland Confederate units at Antietam). It was kind of hard for A.P. Hill to write anything about Branch after the war since Hill was killed before the war ended. Think about what you are saying: you admit Antietam was the single day’s bloodiest combat but yet accuse the U.S. commander that caused the battle (McClellan attacked Lee, it wasn’t the other way around) of not having the stomach for blood.
The only part of this I'd quibble with is that McClellan accomplished his campaign objectives. In the most limited and minimal sense, yes. He turned back Lee's invasion. But this was an opportunity to perhaps end the entire war with an army half his size trapped against an impassible river. It's hard not to think about what a golden opportunity this was--and not just in hindsight either. The discovery of the lost order handed McClellan a "once in war" kind of chance.

At 4:01, that downward facing cannon marks the spot where Israel Richardson was mortally wounded, not Mansfield. (This is the second Antietam video I've seen inside a week that misidentifies this monument ... unless there are more than one "downward facing monuments" on the field...)
one year, we went to this battlefield and experience an odd event. while we were there listening to the animals to throw the corn fields making it sound like men in the fields dying or wounded we watch a little boy tell his mother how the day was running up and down telling her about the dead men etc. she looked at him and than us and we all were wondering about
were he got all this information since he was just 5

Would like to see you guys do Brandywine Battlefield game and tour. We have our gaming group here and could do a throwdown against you guys. I also volunteer at Valley Forge rebuilding huts and could talk about a few things there as well. thanks again, great videos.
Scott, we would love to pursue something like this. As you know, we are very close to the Brandywine area and certainly are interested in gaming AWI. Some friendly club vs. club gaming competition sounds fun!
My "Grandfather" yes you read that right I have his Military Record to prove so.
Philemon Henry McCracken CO "K" 50th PA Vol Inf fought and was wounded by a gunshot to the right knee.
At Antietam he fought the entire war and was discharged at Delaney House Washington DC

Last ime I went to visit,my brother Sean and me were visiting the Irish brigade monument.Weird when the temperture went from 90* sleeting out--------------------freaky!
I grew up there.Walked the hills and fields...all known sites.Fort frederick,French and Indian war...I start there.
Friends of mine have 5 gallon buckets of lead/bullets!...one of my favorites...Two rounds fused together...found at the South mountain...oh back to the two chunks of lead...one rifled one not!...A Union round smashed into a Confederate round. head on,talk about close quarter fighting.Damn yankee...Lazy southerner...being from Maryland was rough.Though born south of the Mason-Dixon line...?While in the Marines I remember this clown that said anything North of Atlanta is a damn YANKEE...he was from Georgia.Well the folks from the Carolinas,Virginia and Maryland disagree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was born south of the Mason-dixon line,may not be the deep south.Well i made it through High School,the USMC-that was insane!-.-.-.-.-.-.- and worked the Rail road....God bless America.
